I went in thinking it would be difficult to have a banquet after an 11 win season, but the speeches were appropriately optimistic. Turnout smaller than last year, but the players seemed to make a very conscious effort to go around to tables and fans introducing themselves. They also had posters and pens available for autographs, which I think is a very good touch. Troy Robertson was again the MC, and I think he does a very nice job, particularly inserting self-deprecating jokes at places. Jett and Mitchell were there. No Grandy, McBroom, or Lanconna. Senior managers and Manning gave brief comments. The managers were very well spoken. Manning is looking to be a police officer. Another comment is that Claggett and Robertson repeatedly expressed how much they appreciated the outreach efforts of the Athletic Department to alumni players. The highlight of the night came from Crews. Erwin Claggett gave a speech. In this, he referenced how his first time only had five wins. Crews spoke next. Early in his comments referencing his own tough season he jokingly asked Claggett if after the tough five win season, did they fire the coach? As many know....they did.
