What a bunch of *******.

A campaign to discourage is so much different then banning.

People have the right to say stupid things and other people have the right to call you stupid.

I don't think there's anything here. It doesn't mention anything about duke having punishments for students using these words

Ban was the wrong word to use.

You believe using the phrase man up is a stupid thing to say?

That belief is what is wrong with the whole speech police movement. There are some really hurtful words and phrases. "Man up" is not one of them and singling it out like one makes everything else this group is trying to do look foolish.

If you are a women's studies prof. "man up" is horrifically sexist. What's the equivalent? Woman up! and get me a beer?

Having said that, how is any of this hurting anyone? Anyone going into nearly any business is going to hear so much more than this crap. Time to man and woman up.

I don't ever use the phrase, not out of some social concern I've just never used it.

If they want to discourage its use that's their right of speech to support those things. It's your right to call them stupid if you think they're being stupid. And neither of you should feel a concern of prosecution by the government.

I'm on the side of - "I could not care less about this situation happening in north Carolina because it does not affect me at all"

Yeah, I think this is kind of a non-story. At least, in the sense that it isn't at all surprising, and tons of similar movements are going on at campuses across the country (this one just happens to be highly organized and very public).

Personally, I'm of two minds about it. On the one hand, I think it's good that we're moving away from homosexuality being used as a derogatory term. On the other hand, chill out, people. If you're offended by phrases like "man up" or "b*tch" (the idea of the word, not being called one), then that sounds like a you problem. And by including these otherwise innocuous terms in with the gay-bashing stuff, you're kind of watering down the whole thing.

(Alternatively, if you want to tell a woman to "woman up," and you want to call a guy a "d*ck," then that sounds like a fine compromise.)

"Duke? What a bunch of ******?"

Typical that you would point to a Duke policy when this word police movement is prevalent throughout the USA.

The most important thing in the United States right now is that we do not offend anyone other than white Christian males (that is OK). Everyone else needs protection and assistance and help and entitlements and "you name it". Or else. That is the most important thing.

Yes, Duke is a very liberal university. You may recall the 86 professors who immediately called for the expulsion of the entire lacrosse team (except for the one AA one) after the lying drug addict felon stripper made false accusations.

Come on tough guy. Stop getting bullied by the "word police." Quit being a ***** by using code words like "thug." Man up and write the word you really want to use.

Reverend Al, I will after you show me your paperwork for clinical anger management therapy. (Code words? WTF? A thug is a thug).

RE: the topic, Duke has the best all around NCAA basketball program the last 25 years, bar none, if you consider all aspects.

BUT it is a very, over the top far left liberal university in most every aspect of campus life. After the lacrosse mess, most all Duke athletes avoided the 86 "suspend all lacrosse players petition" loon professors as best they could manage in their class schedules.

You need therapy.

Check your insurance, let me know, I will make some calls and find a specialist in "code word victim paranoia" from my healthcare contacts.

Vladmir Putin is referred to as a "thug" all of the time by the media. How do you explain that?

Maybe cheesy is mocking aliens. Or "Avatar".

Nice try, but you are wrong again (it is your nature), but he wrote "an unattractive woman".

The Duke word police will be knocking on his door, midnight raid!

Or perhaps I googled "avatar" when coming up with my avatar and that was the thing i found funniest.

But as we all know, intent is not what matters.
