Note that Brian would have to sit out the first half of the season as a redshirt even if he would not transfer.

Harvard offseason wishlist: Part I

by Shankar Duraiswamy

9 July, 2004

CAMBRIDGE—For the college basketball fanatic, the summer months are a time for rest, relaxation, and recruiting. But while the stands may be empty, Division I players around the country will be hitting the gym and working on their games, seeking the individual development that is key to the success of every program. Despite its dismal 4-23 season (3-11 Ivy), Harvard can be forgiven for retaining a hint of optimism for next year's campaign. The Crimson returns all of its personnel from a team that finished the season stronger than it began, and will also regain the services of center Brian Cusworth for at least a semester. But in the absence of any immediate-impact freshman recruits, individual offseason improvement will be essential if the returning team is to make a run at the upper division of the League.

With that in mind, this two-part series will take a look at Harvard's returning players and offer one columnist's meager two cents on the most important thing each player can bring back to the team in November. This column will focus on Harvard's six returning frontcourt players, while the next part of the series will focus on the Crimson backcourt.

Brian Cusworth '07 - A healthy foot. Cusworth suffered a stress fracture in his foot before the season began, and after wasting a semester of eligibility on the bench, he elected to take a year off from school to avoid losing another semester. He'll have to miss a semester at some point, so look for him to sit out the fall semester. Losing Cusworth last year may prove to have been a blessing in disguise for the Crimson in the long run. It allowed for the emergence of forward Matt Stehle and more seasoning for Graham Beatty and Luke McCrone at the forward spots. Even if Cusworth isn't able to pick up exactly where he left off in 2002-03, having him healthy will go a long way to helping Harvard make a run at the upper division of the league. The sophomore big man seems to have a spent a good deal of the last offseason and this past year adding muscle to his upper body, and if he can carry that new mass with two healthy feet, he could be a major factor come Ivy play.

cusworth will be a good pickup. he isnt a project anymore. he probably will never be a star for the billikens, but he wont be a bench warmer either. a legitimate big and i would applaud that pickup. i see nothing wrong with getting quality role players that can bang, rebound and defend while lisch, liddell and polk run wild (for billiken standards anyway, not necessarily loyola marymount). cusworth would at least fit that bill. i would expect at worse, a more athletic but less size than a chris heinrich.

p.s. doesnt it sound as though tsuegnekillib has more rumors in his pocket that he isnt sharing by the just of his last few posts?

imo, liddell is an uncertainty we wont know for sure until november. i am hoping he becomes a billiken, but right now i would rather head to the casino queen and play roulette than bet on tommie being a billiken. the reason why? well if one weekend in new jersey lets him eat the greener grass, what the heck is going to happen when he is away for 3 months and no brad or parents to watch over his new found "free agent" status? he will get tempted a lot while away and it will be interesting to watch how it ends up. i cant help thinking about the point guard that cincy stole from baylor last year. baylor has the kid supposedly wrapped up, and the day of the spring signing period with no prior warnings, he signed with cincy. a lot of wolves out there and we have one dam good looking lamb that will be grazing on the hillside for all to see for about 3 months.
