    Two points:
    1.  Agreed.  The A10 did no favors to help SLU this year.  In fact, it's policies worked against SLU.   When COVID negatively affected Ohio State's football team which did not have enough games to qualify for the postseason as per Big 10 rules, the Big 10 Conference stepped in and changed the rules to help  its preseason favorite.  SLU basketball is not on par with Ohio State Football - I get it - but SLU was a preseason favorite to win or contend for the A10 Championship, was loaded with 3 quality Seniors who each succeeded individually as Juniors before their team had its season abruptly end like all other team, was successful this year in their return against P5 schools before its COVID pause and clearly was hammered hard by COVID.  And while I get the thought of "building in" a week gap in the middle of the A10 Tourney, this decision clearly hurt SLU and other programs by denying them what they needed -- to play games.   And while I make no apology for or intend to defend the Committee for "not following its rules" regarding NET as it relates to the SLU, I would argue that SLU playing far less games than many programs helped make SLU's NET rating more suspect.   And while SLU lost only 6 games, its losses to LaSalle, second loss to UD and loss to St. Bona were not just bad losses but were embarrassing blow outs.  2 extra games would have certainly helped SLU.  Then, again, why did the A10 not arrange for SLU to make up more games prior to the final season?  The baseball Cardinals played double header after double header and damn near played as many games as the others.  The STL Blues and and the NHL are playing multiple games against the same opponents and even moved to this season only to a realigned Western Conference.   Loyola and Drake played a full schedule in part by the "home and away" games in the Valley.  Not the A10 -- it made no changes other than to shorten its season.  And don't forget that SLU lost a key game against Richmond where we flew out to the Richmond only to leave with no game?  Richmond didn't properly interpret the league COVID rules?  Wasn't that the case claimed also by the team to play Richmond after us?   And for this "leadership", Richmond was made a host of the A10 Tourney?  And as much as I believe the Committee is still conference slotting, why would the A10 get more bids than the other mid majors or worse?  Optics are important.   When we play our Championship game in Madison Square Garden the same weekend as the P5 guys, we look more like them.  But when we play our Tourney the week prior, the same weekend as the lesser conferences, the A10 looks lesser and gets treated as a lesser conference.  For that decision alone, the A10 Commissioner should summarily be fired for setting the conference back for years.
    2.  Chris May, by many accounts, is a nice guy, returns emails, warmly greets posters at away games, displays his his passion while yelling at the refs during home games and now has both soccer programs playing good as well... but where was he when our program needed to make up games?  When rules could have been changed to help SLU but which were changed to hurt SLU?  And where was  Dr. P ?  Dayton got the championship game and not SLU?  And with longevity, should there not also be power?  How many more senior AD's are there in the A10 than Chris May?  And why can SLU never get anyone with connections with the A10? with the NCAA and/or Tournament Committee?  Debbie Yow had these connections but I don't believe anyone has come close since her.   Yes, we are long overdue for someone at SLU (AD May, the Board of Trustees, Coach Ford) to put its foot down and demand better -- and if not, then we leave.

Yep.  AP rankings, Coaches Poll, RPI, adjusted RPI ... now NET.   Yet another tool to help analyze and compare to deflect criticism away from the Committee.  At the end of the day, though, it always comes down to the money -- conference slotting.

The "name" programs became what they are by winning.  Now, that their seasons are not what they normally have been, they are smart to shut down, especially in this odd COVID year and protect their name - by not playing future.   They have plenty of revenue from their current seasons and from prior year NCAA  Tourney credits.  Smart.

I found the figure of nearly $5 million of our $7.5 million as being salary to be rather high. Or higher than I expected in that I assume Coach Ford is making around $2 million or so?  Even $3 million? Who makes the other $2 million?
And yes, figures can fluctuate from year to year and some programs will include expenses which others do not but we are spending nearly double that of the highest spending program from the Valley which is closer to Duquesne than us.
Davidson had their nice run in the tourney as did George Mason and recently Loyola, we waited 50 years for the Blues to win the Stanley Cup and may have to wait awhile longer for our Billikens but I would rather compare ourselves to Marquette and the $11.8 million they are spending.

    Thanks.
How is the weather this week for your lemonade stand to raise the needed money to retain you head coach? Actually hope you do
And yes, enjoy the rivalry. Peace.

Well to me the shock was watching our proven youngsters not have anything in the tank and no spring in their steps only a day later. Have never seen that before. Trying to figure out why?
I guess our boys were prepared, mentally focused and motivated the day before but Coach Ford forgot to game plan for St Bona and reverted to being poor x’s & o’s coach?
If only we played Hargrove. Oh wait we did, and yes he hit a nice three-pointer but then let his man go to the hoop for a layup  If only we would play Jacobs, oh wait we did and that didn’t help either.  If only Jimerson were in the game and hit some three-pointers, oh wait, he was in the game, he hit many three-pointers but he also was dunked upon as we were blown out of the gym
Yep, the whole loss is on Bell’s shoulders.  When does he transfer?  Waiting for the post saying if only we had Diarra and/or Hankton instead. We kept the wrong one?  We need a head coach to evaluate talent.
Bully Ball and good defense played yesterday?  Sorry, I miss that game. Instead I was watching Saint Louis play St. Bonaventure.  Yes, I remember Bully Ball. I remember watching defensive swarms and our coming away with steals, tip balls and rebounds resulting in fast breaks. Wonder how many we had yesterday?  I remember our defense creating our offense of opportunities.  I don’t remember our fast tempo being started by quick shots after the other team makes a basket  Then again, I am getting older and my memory may just not be the same.
Who will be our coach next year?  I hear his house was up for sale.  Why can we not play 11?  Sure hope we find good transfers bc all our guys suck.

    Agreed. Poor execution.
French is closer to 6’6” and the size and reach Osun and the tempo of the game was not favorable. And yes, French lacks a shot outside of 5 feet and nearly all his shots today were blocked or contested but normally French has the athletic ability (quickness, leaping ability, strength) to overcome this - but not tonight.

Yuri Usually has quick hands to get steals and quick feet to stop dribble penetration but not tonight  As poor as his shooting and scoring was, his defense was worse.
Goodwin usually has the relentless leaping ability to rebound even when not in good position, to somehow come away with the ball and to deflect and intercept passes but not tonight.
i could go on. A step slow, no spring in their legs, too late to the spot.  Normally not an issue for 20 year olds at the end of the season but these are not normal times.

Wish I could solve and end the contested debate once and for all but I cannot.   Here's what we know:
    1.  RM had 2 older, former head coaches on his staff in Crews and Whitells
    2. RM thought highly of both
    3.   Some key Billiken insiders have reported that RM gave his preference for Crews over Whitesell (and I believe this story though not all do)
    4.  AD May chose Crews as Interim HC over Whitesell and Whitesell left
Now to me, assuming the above preference of Crews over Whitesell was made, what did the preference mean?   RM wanted Crews as the caretaker and public face of the program until RM returned or that RM wanted Crews as our full-time next, permanent head coach.   I believe the former and your article supports my theory.
RM was not some long-time Billiken loyalist or separated from the program. Should a non-head coach loyalist like Dr. C give his wishes on his death bed, that's one thing.   But RM already was the head coach and most likely did not think he would die "so quickly" even though he had been dying for years and years with heart disease.  To me, even as bad as it was for him then, and no doubt RM knew things were bad and that his disease became worse and the doctors' option became fewer each time, RM always survived I believe he thought he would would somehow survive yet again.   And the article is typcial RM: praise for those around him... but to me, the key is that he found Whitesell to be a balance to him.   He stopped reading Whitesell's reports until RM watched them first and RM made his one determination. RM did not delegate.  It was not in his DNA.  RM did everything himself - he was a perfectionist.   Those who wanted responsibility delegated to them either left RM to get it elsewhere or never coached with him to start.  RM's coaching tree legacy is not much -- b/c IMO RM hired guys not to replace him but to complement him - to be a balance.  And Crews was no different.  IMO, RM clearly knew that neither could or should replace him but both were key balances to him.  As I (and several others) said at the time, neither Crews nor Whitesell were good enough to be our next head coach.   We had hired sucessful veterans in Spoon and RM and then we took a chance on an up and coming young coach in Romar ... but hiring older guys who previously failed in the Valley/MCC (Loyola, Evansville), Indiana State (Porter) and average years at SD State and Loras (Brad) is not the way for us to go.

AD May makes mistakes like other Athletic directors. In fact, his track record of making mistakes may be greater than other athletic directors but he also lacks the funds to fix his mistakes. Making a bad hire is understandable. Making a bad extension is not. I would clean house and look for a new AD

My daughter is a high school Junior and select volleyball player who has the skills to play D1. She has reached her limit though, is backing off and no longer wishes to play competitive volleyball or college volleyball. With that said, DOC is absolutely correct. St. Louis is a huge hotbed for volleyball. A top 25 team could be reached every year with St. Louis girls alone. The better girls go to the Big Ten and SEC and are not interested in playing for SLU in the A10. Last year, though, we lost to SEMO which had landed a very good Libero from St Joseph Academy.  SEMO over SLU?
And 05 is also correct.  Kent Miller must go. What has he done?  Either assistant coach would be an improvement. Major failure by SLU and AD May.  Either Chris May is incompetent or his hands are financially tied.  I go with the latter.
With all that said, no one has answered Roy’s question. Why is Kent Miller still here? Third or fourth place in the A10 is good enough for SLU now? OK, we are in the top tier of volleyball budgets for the A10 - why is Roy wrong about the B of T not wanting to pay two salaries?  Can we not be in the top tier of the A10 and also refuse to pay two salaries?
Other than Dr C and Novelly, is there anyone else at SLU who gives a damn about SLU athletics?

Umass is all Tre Mitchell.  He can score inside and if you sluff off him on the perimeter, he can shoot from there.  He is/was a matchup problem for us last year in the game at Amherst.  If I recall the game at Chaifetz, he was in foul trouble and not much of a factor.  Will we be the recipient of the usual A10 referee crucifixion of Fre3nch on his Senior Night or not?
Noah Fernandes, the transfer from Wichita State is a nice point guard.  He can score (11 ppg) and assist (aabout 6 apg).  Carl Pierre is the lone senior and his season this year mimics that of his career --- up and down.  He is mainly a three-point threat and if he comes out hot, he will stay hot usually.  Hot or not, he will jack things up most times.  Ronnie DeGray III is the starting forward.  He is mainly a support player in this his freshman year but despite an unconventional looking shot, he will launch threes if left alone.  And I've seen him make them.  Mostly he is a defender and a rebounder and most points from him are likely considered gravy.
The fifth spot has been rotated mostly between freshmen TJ Weeks and Javohn Garcia.  Both seem out of control most times to me and liking of every shot they can get.  Garcia will slash and drive more ala Jhamir Watkins at VCU and Weeks is more of a Pierre clone, jacking away from deep.  The bench is mostly Cairo McCrory and Dibaji Walker.  Neither do much; Walker reminds me of Antwan Walker over at URI but no matter both are incredibly inconsistent.  The 6'10" transfer Mark Gaseprini hasn't done much this year for the Minutemen.  He'll spell Mitchell and that's about it.
Umass again plays matador defense.  They come out in a full court press but it's pretty emplty as far as defense is concerned.  McCall seems to just use it to speed up the game, and get them more possessions after the opposition scores.  This was the case last year as well.  In the one real game of note that I saw, Davidson just schooled them both inside and out.  It seemed to be a case of an educated, smarter, veteran team just imposing it's will on the younger team and making them pay for every little mistake they made.  Davidson won in Amherst by 9 then.  In that game, Mitchell went out with a shoulder injury late and missed the Fordham and Rhode Island games after that.  He cam eback against Richmond thi spast week but did not start and only got 22 mpg for 9 points in that loss.
All in all, I think it will be interesting.  I think Senior Night for Goodwin and French and Perkins should give us added ooomph but with this team, you never seem to know.

Because it’s easier and apparently more fun to  sit on the sidelines and speculate. Our coach is a bad in game game coach, he may leave, his house wasnon the market, players may transfer, players will be unhappy, how long will good players will sit on the bench, playing eight does not work, playing 10 does not work so playing even more will work.  Some topics and players are off limits and others are free to be trashed. And note: no one has suggested who sits - just who should play. And is Jacob‘s really injured or is he still suffering from Covid?  Now if you’re referring to Jacob‘s injuries as a freshman, I suggest that they prevented him from learning how to play college basketball  - far different from today.  He now knows how to play college basketball, he has played well in the past, and yes, something is preventing him from having success now.
Maybe our head coach does know more than the rest of us. As I have said all along,, our roster is full of guys who are very good and talented but who are excellent at this but not very good at that. And yet when their weaknesses are exposed, whether due to good scouting/play of our opponents, Covid sickness or injury, there is no recognition of them and their limitations towards their struggles, blame has to go elsewhere. As to further details,  maybe after the season. We have a Tourney to win now.

I remember a time, long long ago, when players earned their playing time. When matchups mattered. Now, it appears to be a coaching style to play eight, 10 or whatever regardless of what the players do.  And VCU on the road is a good time to see what Strickland can do?  Hargrove git minutes last game and went 3 of 9. No, we can’t just lose a tough game on the road with bad reffinging calls and unlucky breaks but we also must tear down our players, our coach and then invent rumors of transfers and coaching changes. SLU’s  medical school should open the doors and hand out valium to many on this Board.

I’m not pleased with either change of venue, especially moving the A10 Tourney to Richmond, giving that home court advantage to 2 former Colonial Athletic Association teams, one of whom (VCU) which has been in the A10 less time than SLU.
I know the reasons. They’re not enough for the move.

2 years ago, we took 50 shots in our close win against Dayton with Bully Ball   Last year we took 61 shots in our OT loss to Dayton. Friday night we launched 70 shots and yet many on this Board wanted us to to increase the tempo. Why?
Friday our 3 bigs played 44 minutes  Has (18), Linssen (15) and  Bell (11) which means we only had 2 bigs on the floor together for 4 minutes

Two years later, we have more bigs, a deeper bench, we have a pass first point guard who is to run the offense  and distribute to all, although not score (1-4 with no FTs for 3 points) and yet our bigs take only 8 of our 70 shots   Has 3-5 and 0-1 FT with 6 points, Linssen 2-2 w 2 FTs for 6 points and Bell 0-1 with no FTs
I cannot believe that Coach Ford‘s game plan is for the offense to ignore our bigs and have our wings take 85% of our shots. Bring back Bully Ball and you can take Selfish Ball or run and gun ball.

Did we watch the same game last night?
Smothering defense by UD? Sorry I didn’t see that. instead I saw a lot of missed wide-open shots and layups.

UD is a better team than us?  Last night, most definitely, but on the season?  No way
I also saw a lot of selfish play by our wings who missed alot of wide open shots, who then tried to drive and score in the paint but who failed and who then forced things and who then made alot of turnovers leading to easy buckets the other way.
i watched our playmakers not make plays and, along with our wings, make almost zero attempts  to get the ball inside to our bigs
i also saw very few FT attempts by us - mostly our bigs   Yes, I know the refs did not blow the whistle for us quite a bit, however, if the outside shooting is is not working, whether due to our own failures or the other team’s defense, why no pounding the ball inside?  We attempted 70 shots  but only 5 by Has (3-5 & who missed his only free-throw), 2 by Linsenn (2-2 & who made both of his free throws) and 1 by Bell (0-1 & who took no free throws)
Bully Ball used to include Has and/ or bigs. Last night was not Bully ball. Last night was selfish ball  I do not believe coach Ford was on the sidelines yelling “don’t run the offense”, “don’t work the ball inside for a high percentage shot”, “just launch another outside shot because you don’t want to work for something better” and “And if your shot doesn’t fall then put your head down and drive into the paint and it will go in.”

Again, the worst part of S2, according to my source, is that the paid, independent, expert law firm that inexplicably had their findings delayed for months throughout the season, then their findings and results which favored the players and the team and were made known to Coach Ford and his coaching staff who was told the boys would return that season but then SLU chose send Coach Ford a curveball and chose not to follow these findings and recommendations and expelled the kids long after recruiting deadlines.
It’s very simple, if kids act inappropriately, are knuckleheads, are bad students or bad teammates then you cut your losses and move on. Coach Ford was not given the opportunity to cut his losses and move on. The news broke public prior the start of school in August. By November signing., Coach Ford knew or should have known to cut losses i. November but was told the opposite and S2 then affected two years. At the time I said this would be used against Coach Ford and him taking longer than some expected to turn our program around.

That’s fair. Everyone is free to have their own opinion. Just read more like a fact than an opinion.
As to John Manning, without the injury, he becomes a very good player for us. With the injury not so much. As to the empty cupboard, I cannot agree with that. We had Manning and that promising PG who left bc of Crews. And while I am not, and was not a big Grandy Glaze fan, I do believe RM would have gotten more out of him than Jim Crews. And the whole Jordair Jett, class was only Juniors when RM stepped down and then died. We had alot of Juniors and Seniors and not that many empty scholarships.
And I believe that anything RM had his name associated with he would either do his way and at 100% or not at all. When his contract was up, would he walk away? Maybe  But I don’t buy into this theory that RM was getting even with Fr Biondi by slowly and intentionally ruining the basketball program which he spent years building. I believe RM would quit but would never do this to his players and coaches. Just din’t believe this was in his DNA. Again we can agree to disagree.

It's easy to have complaints about a coach's decisions. Especially since what one thinks the coach should have done always works perfectly in their head. It's also easier to have those criticisms after it's clear the coach's  decision didn't work out as planned. Nothing wrong with questioning the decision it's the attitude that the decision anyone else may have made is better, when in fact there's no guarantee and probably likely that their decision wouldn't have done any better.
I'm not saying coach's never make mistakes of course they do but they've been at every practice, they seen more and have far more data at their ready than any of us know. Sometimes a coach makes the best decision at the time and it just doesn't work.
I often wonder when reading this board why more posters aren't D1 coaches themselves.

Alot of talk about player choices and performance...
    1.  What if its true that some were affected by COVID more than others?
    2.  Not saying Goodwin and French don’t deserve criticism and more time on the bench,  Perkins had been very disappointing and Yuri doesn’t look like he used to.
    3.  And shouldnt we figure out our core players before we worry about playing the whole roster?  Meaning playing Hargrove?
Not practicing and not playing games for so long - while your competition is at the top of their game is not fair, not normal... No doubt in my mind that Hargrove not getting a chance to shine is due to this unusual year.

First of all, excellent observations by Dr. Kelsey
Second, I will not post in the game thread the day after the game in that all of us are Billiken fans and emotions get to the best of us but I ask the simple question: does coach Ford get any credit when good things happen or only blame when bad things happen?  We did win a huge, must win game yesterday after sitting out with COVID for so long
Third, whether Doc is correct or not about a heart to heart conversation, the facts are the facts. Goodwin and French both sat for a long period of time when the game was on the line in the second half and others were given the opportunity to step up.
Fourth, if our Billikens needed time to get the rust knocked off after sitting for a month while UD and LaSalle kept practicing/playing, improved, came together and were playing in midseason form, why is Coach Ford a bad coach for sticking with his Seniors who have carried this team now for a long time? Sounds more like a discussion about how long you stick with your horses.  LaSalle game was brutal. But this game, Goodwin came out and had a great first half and carried our team again. Perkins did not but most likely we lose yesterday’s game without the play of Perkins in the second half with whom Coach Ford was patient as well as with French and Goodwin whom Coach Ford was not.
Fifth, does Coach Ford deserve any credit for having a halftime talk with Goodwin which changed his behavior and for changing his lineups in the second half?  Seems to me Ford’s second half decisions worked
Sixth, the momentum was all St. Bonaventure at the end of the first half and yet we made changes i. The second half and won by a comfortable margin without French and Goodwin leading the way. Is this proof that coach Ford was outcoached again yesterday?
