Coach Schertz on the Radio 11/30

KMOX Sports on a Sunday Morning, Coach Schertz (still in Palm Springs CA) with Tom Ackerman, 11/30. Mind set of a fan and of a competitor in the locker room has to be different. Can't let emotions effect the team. Can't ride the emotional roller coaster. Heartbroken with the results v Stanford. Thought Santa Clara controlled most of the game and should have won. If anyone deserves a game winner it is Thames. Story book moment. Never had a more improbable loss against Stanford. Also said the 25 footer, with the guy falling down. Q almost got a finger on the final shot. Stanford game should not have come down to luck. We have to focus on the issues we control. We will see how mentally tough we are with this loss. Loyola's Point Guard has missed a couple of games, the ones they lost. Not sure if he will be back or not. Lot of size and fire power. Same vein as Stanford and Santa Clara. 7'1" pivot player. This should be a Q2 team. We got knocked down, can we pick ourself up. Watching film today v Stanford. Take the lessons then flush it. Still in Palm Springs today, going to LA later today and turn attention to Loyola. Long time together with the team. Lot of time for the team to connect. Part of being a team is going through adversity together. See how the team reacts. We haven't had adversity until this trip. Big night for SLU Soccer. Anyone in Sweet 16 can win it all. If you have a great goalie, you have a chance. SLU has one of the best in the country. -

Here is a guarantee! Sharma + Dunlap won't be shut out from the arc today. Yesterday they were a combined 0-6.

This will be our third meeting with Standford. They lead 2-0. Bills are due! Last meeting was Dec 29, 1973 in the MSGarden, 79-63 L. Most of our MBM's weren't alive. First meeting was Dec 22, 1971 at Palo Alto, 71-61 L.

We won the Points Per Possession last night, 0.91 to 0.84. Brown took, and made, two somewhat mid range jumpers in the second half. He was maybe 6 to 8 feet from the rim, not in the paint. It was good to see that element in the game.

Schertz said he will script substitutions for the first 31 minutes today, as he has done all 5 games, and then let the game dictate who plays at the end.

From Stu: The funny thing is that when Acrisure Series officials ignored the contract arrangement with SLU, the Bilikens ended up with a better opening opponent. Instead of facing Utah, which is No. 134 in KenPom, they got Santa Clara, which is No. 54.

Coach has said for the past month he hopes to have his rotation pattern figured out by California. Well, welcome to California. So what will the pattern be? It seems given that 9 players will play double digit minutes. It might be time to stretch a few players a few more minutes. Here is what has happened to date. Avila and Brown have started all five games. I'm inking them in the starting lineup tomorrow. Jones has started four games, McCottry three games, Green three games, Otieno two games, and Dunlap, Sharma and Thames all one game. With Santa Clara being a 'big' team, I would lean towards Otieno as starter 3, and then McCottry as a 4th and Green as 5, simply because Green has a higher three point % to date than does Jones. But it doesn't matter who starts, it matters more who plays well getting the minutes, and who finishes tight games. Today, among the top 9, Avila is the worst FT% shooter, but I certainly want him on the floor at crunch time.

Through 5 games our offensive Points per Possession is 1.08, and our defense PPP is 0.79. PPP includes turnovers. This formula wins. Keep playing fast.

Unfortunately we have two games against Loyola (KP 267 today) and LaSalle KP 229. When the match-ups first came out, I was like, Yeah, 2x against the Ramblers. But now the four games against Loyola and LaSalle will be anchors on our A10 schedule.

North Carolina 85 St. Bonnie 70 NC shot 27 FT and made 21. St. B shot 8 FT, yes EIGHT, and made 5. Hmmm.

Coach praised Robbie at +27 and covered on D as needed. When recruiting Brown he was asked, what position does he play? Coach says who cares, he’s a player.

IUPUI actually split into IU-Indianapolis and Purdue- Indianapolis. This was done primarily for academic reasons.
