Aussie Pipeline

Props to BillikenFan05 for that great Jordair clip. I still think he could get a glass of water in the Association as a defensive specialist... Like Patrick Beverly sans jumpshot... And by "he" I mean Jett, no offense 05.

Anyways, I clicked on the link which took me to the NBL's twitter page and who did I see in one of the first posts? Yet another Billiken! Kevin Lisch! No less Kevin Lisch in an odd take on the famous Shepard Ferry Obama '08 "Hope" poster...

Which caused me to think, with so many prominent Billiken Alumni playing in Australia, what is keeping us from opening a healthy pipeline to recruit down under? Why don't we mobilize such a force?

Now there is a disclaimer to this question: Such a request would assume that SLU currently has a coach with energy enough of capably recruiting at the D1 level... Furthermore, it would assume we have a sentient human being capable of asking abstract questions as our Athletic Director, not a lifeless bag of leaves magically able speak to speak but other wise show no other human displays of intelligence... BUT assuming we have those things soon, shouldn't this be a reasonable expectatio

Oh Kevin, you gave me hope once. Miss you.

-I'll take good players from any and all places, jeez there are how many good players in the area one could see on one tank of gas?

-Rick had a name and connections in Oz, unless the next coach or their assistants have the same, it will be tough to get the next Cody or Rob

Two Bills have been MVP of this league in the past 5 years. The ground game is there.

So let me elaborate on this... And my frustrations...

-Two Billikens have been MVP's of the NBL in Australia over the past 5 years, there are numerous other Bills in the league.

-It is unreasonable to expect Professional Players, in the midst of their career, to carry out recruiting duties... No doubt.

-An athletic department should note this current situation and see an opportunity to create a recruiting pipeline.

-Have an Assistant Coach, one already familiar with the recruiting process, perhaps an Aussie himself, dedicate himself to Aussie recruiting, or Oceanic recruiting, or international recruiting...

-On those trips, link in your former players, have them reach out to the recruits, espouse the virtues of the Billiken family.

I'm not saying we get the next Ben Simmons, but what of the next Dellavedova? Or Rob? Or Cody?

Plus, we want to foster relationships with our old players, that's what HEALTHY basketball programs do. THIS IS LOW HANGING FRUIT.

I don't know all the NCAA rules on recruiting but I would think having any past players do recruiting would be a violation - they would be considered boosters.

Hey Cheese, hope you're well.

I thought that they could meet at occasions arranged and under supervision of the school...

Now I have to figure out who you are . You may be right about the situation you lay out - I know the rules are very tight but how would the school supervise this?

Maybe YOU'RE not who I thought you are... I had a buddy in College we called Cheese. My last name is in my user name so if you can't figure it out I guess I was the one that was mistaken.

I think its a dire sign of how little faith we have in the athletic department that setting up a scouting program Down Under is some impossible feat on the level of having a football program with the CFB Playoffs.

May has lowered expectations to incredible depths of sorrow.

Cheeseman- Sorry for the mistaken identity. I still wish you well though!

I think you would have to give up one of your coaches here to name one down there. When RM was recruiting down there he had a coach from there who traveled there on a regular basis and still had duties back here. I did not mean they could not figure it out just that thinking all it would take is asking KL or JJ or CE to start recruiting would not be how it would work.

For sure. They are the sweetener in the situation though.

It just truly bothers me that we have this alumni base, if you will, and no effort down there. It seems like low hanging fruit.

Well, even though Australia is a rather large country, I'm sure three alumni can cover it just as easily as a U.S. city or state!
