Bay Area Billiken
It is unknown what Jio Fontan will do- Fontan's announcement came before Whittenberg's dismissal. Fontan tried to transfer after last season, but was not given his release. The new interim Head Coach, Grasso, moves up from Assistant and top recruiter. Fordham has landed some top recruits- Fontan, the soph, Gaston, a freshman this year. Also what will happen with the big recruit for next year, Joel Wright aka Air Jamaica? Whittenberg barely survived after last season (3-25), likely because he had a long term contract in place. Then he reportedly kept the team for 1 1/2 hours at Manhattan College this past week after a particularly embarrassing "road" loss to the cross-Bronx rival. Much of this has been documented at www.fordhamfans.com, and it made its way into the NY tabloids. There are many things happening with Fordham athletics. The Fordham FCS (Div. 1-AA) Football program is going scholarship. Fordham was going to continue playing in the non-scholarship Patriot League in football, but not be eligible for the championship and automatic NCAA bid. But now Northeastern has dropped its football program, opening a spot in the scholarship Colonial in football that Fordham might fill. Fordham President Father McShane reportedly visited the facilities at Hofstra, as Fordham has long term eyes on building a new on campus facility in the 7,500 seat capacity range. Fordham is down, way down in hoops. But Father McShane is not the kind of guy that is going to want to keep losing. This school is a sleeping giant in basketball IMHO. It is a school that is excelling in many other areas- 4th ranked Catholic school per US News and World Report, rated the hottest Catholic school last year by Newsweek. Fordham has an ambitious building plan for its Manhattan (Columbus Circle) second campus. And Fordham was the site for that big U2 concert on Good Morning America earlier this year. This is the type of exposure that Fordham can bring to the A-10 in the world's media and business capital.

Bay Area Billiken
My contemporaries and elders on this Board well remember that SLU was once deep in the depths itself in hoops- as in 6-21 my Senior year of 1981-82, which included several scandals. Schools as good as Fordham can rise from the abyss.

RUBillsFan
My contemporaries and elders on this Board well remember that SLU was once deep in the depths itself in hoops- as in 6-21 my Senior year of 1981-82, which included several scandals. Schools as good as Fordham can rise from the abyss. St. Bonaventure was just awful a few years ago and had some kind of scandal just before SLU joined the A-10 IRC. They have rebounded slightly and appear to be headed in the right direction. Baylor's basketball team had probably the worst situation ever a few years ago with that kid getting shot by a teammate and they made some noise in the big 12 this past season. I agree with Bay Area, teams can rebound fairly quickly. Having a team in NY is good for the A-10 even if they are terrible and if Fordham has potential to get better they could be a real asset for the A-10. They're in a talent rich area and with the right coach could be a real force someday. Look at how down Duquense was and the strides they've made against greater odds than Fordham. As someone said, they are a sleeping Giant.

lucky bob
SIU in on one of their recruits. http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/zach_brazill...rhfvMkUx67WypfN Word is that Wright has no shot of qualifying, at least for next year. Doesn't have the test scores (For Fordham at least) and goes to an unaccredited prep school.
