Next Year's Dayton Game

Recommended Posts

I don't know if next year's schedule is out but i hope there is another home game versus dayton.

Being from milwaukee and growing up a marquette fan i have been to multiple marquette/madison games. i know in the 90's madison used to split the bradley center with marquette. But now marquette students implement what the call "Operation Visine: Get the Red Out" its pretty original and popular and has worked well. I think it'd be great idea for next years game. Though i hope something original and better would come along because i hate to steal other schools ideas. but i think it'd work if you got the word out.

We've played a home-and-home with Dayton since joining the A10, so hopefully the league keeps that up. They've been changing the home-and-home matchups each year and most of them don't make sense (e.g. we don't play Xavier twice this year).

I like the idea of some annual slogan like that for our rivalry games, since UD is maybe the closest thing we have to that right now. SLU and Mizzou should use Marquette and Madison for a model but the Mizzou side doesn't seem to want that (and I know it's been discussed lately and all constructive conversation about it was hijacked by SLU-bashing Mizzou fans who post here for some reason).

I didn't hijack anything. I very clearly stated why I don't think it will happen.

SLU is certainly a worthy opponent. They're a division 1 team in a big conference that regularly puts multiple teams into the tourney. As a Mizzou fan however, it screams "TRAP GAME" louder than a red-faced Majerus. If SLU follows up on the steps they've taken recently and gets into the 30-60 RPI range, then the fact that it's an easily losable game isn't as bad. I would love it if both teams were always in the Tourney, always winning 20+ games, etc. But until that happens, SLU just represents a very loseable game that would result in an ugly "1" in the loss column against sub 100 rpi teams.

It was roy who started calling me a stereotypical "mi$$ou" fan without bringing anything of real substance to the conversation.

You guys do realize that outside of the billikens community, roy is considered to be one of the most stubborn, obstinate, antagonistic posters in this sports community, right?

You don't get it. Roy is also considered all of those things inside the billikens community... but he's still one of ours and he bleeds billiken blue, so leave him alone Mizloser. Last time I checked, this was BILLIKENS.COM

I just am really hoping that we play Xavier at home next year. I was disappointed that they weren't on our schedule for a home game in the Fetz this season, but let's hope that Xavier and Dayton both enter Chaifetz nxt year

And yet, still no response to my take on the game.

probably because no mindful billiken fan cares about the take of a mi$$ouri fan like yourself.

And yet, still no response to my take on the game.

I, and many others, responded to your take on the game last week. I'll sum it up again: we're not impressed by the "what do we have to gain?" defense of Mizzou fans, this game brought 26,000 to the Dome the first year and sold out Hearnes and Savvis the following two so tickets would sell quickly and generate a lot of money for both, no one's RPI is hurt (look at our non-conference schedules and see the all the terrible games we could replace), and both programs have everything to gain from playing it.

Romar called Mizzou every year and was disappointed the 3-year deal wasn't renewed, Soderberg called them and left dates open every year as long as possible, and now Majerus has said multiple times he wants the game to happen. Cokehead Quin was smart to do those three, but then got scared because the games were too even, I guess. I have no clue why Anderson doesn't do it because I think I remember him even saying he was interested when he first started there.

Norm Stewart was as stubborn, obstinate, antagonistic figures in sports in the past few decades so I think it's funny you call SLU fans that. He was afraid of us, plain and simple, and it appears a lot of Mizzou fans still are.

I only called one SLU fan that, not all of you.

We certainly have terrible games on our schedule that we could replace with better opponents, the point I was making is that SLU, in a game like that, is (like i said) a very loseable game. If Mizzou were a bubble team this year, it would then represent a "key loss" on our resume were we to lose.

We're not hurting for cash, we have two neutral site rivalry events that regularly sell massive amounts of tickets. So why replace an easy win over a cupcake with a decent chance for a loss against SLU?

Thanks for the compliment. Yes it would be terrible to lose to SLU wouldn't it. I guess that's why Mizzou won't play us. We are not afraid to lose to Mizzou.

Of course we might win. And there's the rub. Until Mizzou plays us we just don't care much to hear about them on the Billiken Board.

You should probably tell that to all the posters who bring them up.

I never start these threads, nor do I bring up mizzou in threads that don't already pertain to them.

And i've complimented SLU plenty in my life. I was actually a Billikens fan along with a tigers fan before I came here for the first time and got a big fat scarlet M from the fascist bills fans on this board, and I lost my taste for the boys in blue.

Just for the record. I don't care to hear about Mizzou on this board from ANY of our posters. I think they all should go to the Mizzou board if they want to talk about Mizzou.

JMHO :)

Not asking you to bow down, just to have an opinion one way or the other that goes a bit deeper than "you're a mizzou fan! BOOOOOOOO!!"

what i was thinking wasnt "booooooooooo!!" but it rhymes with "boooooooooo!!"

Fair enough, I'm not trying to force mizzou down anyone's throat. But if people bring it up I'm certainly going to have an opinion. If tigerboard mentioned SLU as much as this place mentions mizzou, I'd wager more of you would be over there sharing your opinions.

I don't mind Mizzou discussion if it involves any of these conditions:

-It has to do with SLU in any way

-It involves local recruits

-It is about postseason play

-It discusses a matchup with an A10 team

-It recaps some big event or game

AND

-It isn't obnoxious, name-calling, taunting, etc.

Let's face it, they're the bigger program in state. I want to play them every year and I don't mind healthy, relevant conversation about them. Problem is we don't get much of that without "we're better, nyah nyah nyah!"

I echo Dr. K's comments.

Cheesy. Further, in response to your comments:

I'd say that it must get quite embarrasing that you Mizzou fans are so AFRAID of playing any local school: SLU, MO State, SIUC. Enjoy the artificial world you create.

Frankly, I don't believe that conference/rival wins are the best indicator of a team's ability. How many times do the objectively lesser team (stats, records...) win against their rival. The grudge matches are great for fans, exciting and are the basis behind a team ability to brag. How many times have seen that the failure to beat a rival causes a coach to lose his job even if he succeeds in all the other games. 16 to 18 conference games is too much. A conference tournament afterward only adds to this. Playing Kansas 3 times a year is too much. So are games against Colorado, Nebraska, etc. 2 is enough. Faced with this, BCS schools are afraid to play anyone good OOC. To me, that is what is wrong with college basketball.

Since all you care about is Mizzou, I would think a Mizzou fan would like to play N. Carolina like they did under the Stipo/Sundvold years, play Arizona or UCLA, possibly UConn or a Big East team like Syracuse. If you don't wan to come to St. Louis twice per year, go play Missouri State or SIUC. These games don't happen anymore - and if they do - they are on neutral courts at the very beginning of the season. The NCAA tournament is the first real chance to see how good the BCS schools are.
