Randy Bennett has been at St. Mary's for 22 years.  In his first 8 seasons, St. Mary's only went to the NCAA tournament twice and only won more than 20 games 3 times.  If the fans had run him out of town because they he was not getting to the tournament enough or winning more than 20 games enought in those early years, they would not be enjoying the success they are having now.  In the 13 non-Covid years since those first 8, St. Mary's has been to the NCAA Tournament 7 times (counting this year).  This includes one Sweet 16 run and three consecutive years that they went to the NIT (this board would have run him off then too).

My point is that consistency and patience is what is required to get to the level of some of the teams that you mentioned. Folks who advocate for keeping Ford are not okay with mediocrity.  This is a BS sentiment that is getting old.  We all want SLU to get to the next level and then the level beyond that.  I just think being patient with a coach that has gotten us 4 twenty win seasons in his first 7 years as coach and one tournament appearance (after inheriting a dumpster fire) gives us a better chance to get where we want to be than starting over with an unknown.

I don't have a problem with posters who think it’s time to part ways with Ford.  You are all entitled to your opinion.  I just think it is too risky right now, and that our chances are better with Ford.  Please stop having a problem with myself and other posters whose opinion differs from yours.  Let's just all calm down.

Thank you for adding this perspective. Ford’s results have been disappointing so far but I’m more willing to give him more time after seeing this. I am curious to see what he does with a new core of players that might be a better fit for the kind of systems he likes to run?

    Hell No.

We have All Americans without jerseys in the rafters.

I think we should give out more recognition in this form, but Yuri can get in line. A dozen players more deserving at a minimum.

Just curious, what all Americans don’t have their jersey retired?

Yuri on any all-defense team 🤣

The voters don't watch the teams play.  Probably doesn't belong on the 1st team either.

Definitely not all-defense but there’s absolutely no way you can leave a guy averaging a double-double with assists off of first team.

Quisenberry went off for 35 on him.

It was 27 but not far off.

Xavier Johnson of all people gave him 23 in the non-con. Wendell Green 22 pts. Noah Fernandes scored 26. Dae Dae Grant had 22. Jason Nelson had 17 off the bench and the dagger late in the game. And of course the aforementioned Ace Baldwin’s 37.

I’ll give him a little bit of credit for out playing Foster Loyer and Kendric Davis. But outside of those two, anytime we play a team with a talented lead guard they usually have their way.

  5. The Billiken clap and the Saint Louis chant are corny. I know it’s mostly for the kids but the high five cam is bad too imo.

And I know my opinion might be skewed as someone who has been to nearly every home game this year but I would like some variation to the game experience. It’s always the same chants, the same crowd games, and the same songs at the exact same times.

This team averages 75.6 points per game which is 2nd out of the 15 teams in the A-10.  We probably had the hardest schedule amount A-10 teams.  My point is that the offense hasn't been the problem this year.  There is plenty of room for criticism, but I think it is misguided to believe that our offense has been the downfall this year.

Oh yeah fully recognize that defense is the problem, but I also think that not being able to create turnovers limits the offense’s capabilities. Additionally, when Ford runs out the same lineup for the entire second half, guys are gassed in the final minutes of the game and unable to run in transition OR play defense.

i do not blame Jimerson, perkins, hargrove, or any of the players without the ball.    If you notice the offense starts off with two of the wings standing in the corner.   the center setting up on a low block and one wing within passing distance of the point guard.   the offense starts once across half court with a 3 pass or handoff shuffle likely in an effort to control clock and run time then yuri goes into hero ball which is at best a 50/50 chance for success.   those you mention above are only safety valves.

my point is i believe the entire offense designed by ford is designed to be initiated and executed by yuri.   yuri and perkins and hargrove are likely told to stay out of the lane as some point in the possession so as not to drag a help defender with them.    so i wont knock jimerson, perkins, hargrove etc.   this is ford's grand scheme imo.   same reason yuri is allowed to play with 8 turnovers.  it's on ford.

ironically our best runs for the season or even last night were when yuri was pushing the ball and we were finding perkins, hargrove, jimerson, etc on the break or for their drives from the wing.  and as you said, then it just stops.  frustrating for all concerned.

I think the offense looks so ugly at times because this team is at it’s best when it’s on the break. Yuri is great at finding guys ins transition. Yet we’re rarely on the break b/c we can’t force any turnovers or we’re forced to slow down in transition late in the second half because the team (mostly Yuri) is gassed.

This was the point of my question in another thread - has Ford beaten any team that he was not favored in?  The answer I got was that he beat Providence which was picked to win by one.  The problem is when you play a team on a neutral floor and are listed to lose by one that is simply a toss up in reality so the answer is NO.  Now the next question would be how many teams has he lost to that he was favored to win?

This is where I’ve been at all year. Ford is a lock to blow some games we should win, but can never pull out an upset to offset those Ls. The only recent one I can think of was Boise St last season. You gotta go back to 2019-20 to find more and even then, those weren’t huge upsets, just tough wins.

Yes, I'd put Linssen in the success group and would take him over Forrester.  You have to tab Isabell as a success, it's Ford's only tournament team.  And that seems to be how we are defining success.  You can't count Ford's transfers that didn't play ---- they didn't play.  No results.  And those were traditional transfers who, like Bess and Foreman had to sit a year.   This thread and my response focus solely on the new transfer portal including grad transfers.

If Rivera is only a scholarship filler, that is just pure dumb.  Is he practicing?  Is he providing practice fodder for the team?  If he's not, why not give the free ride to Hughes Jr. or one of the other walk-ons.  Why reward a guy with a free education if he's providing nothing and won't be back next year?  What are we paying him --- NIL-wise?

So let me get this straight; we recruit Daniel, tell him to come join our basketball team and we’ll give him a full ride scholarship. He breaks his foot, which is out of his control, and can’t practice for the year as a result. So in return, we should pull his scholarship, effectively leaving him to have to foot a 60k bill from SLU on his own while giving his scholarship to the walk-on that has a father that was a former NBA player that can easily afford the cost of SLU?

Schmidt entered last year with the preseason pick to win the league - his team never had a sniff of the NCAA Tourney last year. Based on expectations, he had an awful season.

Well that’s happened once with Schmidt. How many times has Ford failed to meet pre-season expectations? It’s every other season. 2018-19, 2020-21, and 2022-23.

  11. Also, can we stop undermining any and all criticisms of Ford by this point? If it’s directed at posters who have had nothing positive to say since they’ve joined (BC, Banghegotit, Joelabs, Bonner, etc.), then I get it. But there are a lot of us (myself included) that have been Ford defenders up until this season. Personally, my breaking point was blowing an 18 point lead against SIUE (who is 223 in the net btw) at home. How some of you find that acceptable, I will never understand.

When you have lifelong Billikens and unquestionable supporters like BRoy becoming apathetic, something is very wrong. It’s no longer just Ford haters looking to find something to complain about; people actually have valid criticisms.

Trivia question for Ford haters, This is Anthony Grants 6th season at Dayton. How many NCAA appearances have they had? Now going by Ford hater standards, just answer the question, not interested in excuses.

Why are you disregarding context to make a point? It’s completely disingenuous to disregard the fact that Dayton was ranked 3rd in the country prior to the 2020 NCAA tournament being cancelled. Ford can’t even reach 3rd in the A10!! our only tourney appearance under Ford took a Hail Mary conference tourney win. And yes, Dayton doesn’t have an appearance under grant; but we all know they would’ve been a one seed if not for COVID while we were on track for the NIT.

So in six seasons, our high point has been a lucky tourney run and fourth place in a weak A10 while Dayton’s high point has been a sure fire one seed and undefeated in the A10. And you’re trying to say we’re on par with Dayton?
