FWIW, on Frank’s radio show today, he was pretty confident Avila, Swope and Kent were coming. Plus, Turnbull and the 6’10 recruit from Canada. He also mentioned he thinks Jimerson is coming back and Schertz told him that his goal was to have a team of players 6’4”-6’10”.

That is interesting because it sounded from at least one source that Nitu was going to stay loyal to Graves, because he was the lead recruiter. I am confident in Turnbull.

Kentucky friend told me he woke up yesterday thinking UK would hit a home run and they ended up bunting.

It really seems to be the way things are going with up and coming coaches. Basketball nerds are being valued over the hot shot personalities.

So a 'do not contact' tag is essentially useless... Or is he just planning on showing up at Texas unannounced?

Do not contact means that schools cannot contact him unsolicited. He can reach out to whoever he wants.

wouldnt it be something if ford falls into this?   i find it hard to believe but if everyone is afraid of the expectations and  pressure, who knows who they might resort to being their next coach.

I think it's better described as BULLSH*T. It's not just pressure and expectations it's like being named the leader of a cult.

If Chris May sticks around, new SLU fans will know him as the AD in Golden age of SLU sports, where all the major sports teams were winning.  Meanwhile in MBM land we will still be talking about his social media failures and overpaying Travis Ford.  We will become the grumpy old men.  It is our destiny.

I really wish I could learn how to fail upwards.

For as crappy an AD as May supposedly is, Coach Shertz seems to think May did a pretty good job of convincing him to come to SLU.

It is astounding to me to watch people defend May based on things we've all agreed May is really good at, making people feel good when wants something out of them. Nobody is denying May's ability to fund raise or build relationships with donors. He's shown very shaky hiring ability, but has done really well as of late. Once again I am impressing on you the difference between the way he treats donors, coaches etc and *historically* the way he treats athletes, everyday staff and normal fans.

I get where you are coming from, but that + is doing a LOT of work.  Avila is much much better than Ellis & honestly the only things similar about their games are that both are bigs who could stretch the floor & aren't super athletic.  Ellis was a career 42.7% from 2 and 33.4% from 3.  Avila is at 63.4%/37.2%  Ellis averaged 6.3 rebs, 1.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blks per 40 mins.  Avila's are 8.1 rebs, 4.4 ast, 1.0 stls, 0.8 blks.

Agreed. I was illustrating that body type and quickness aren’t a certain indicator of overall playing ability. They definitely play into it.

I also admittedly did not watch much other than his transfer highlights on youtube....might be a stupid question, but can he dunk? High IQ for sure. Great passer. Decent shooter, but getting Adam Knollmeyer athleticism vibe. <insert trashcan vid>

Also does the MVC lack athletic big men?  His competition looked suspect. The A10 has athletes.

    He’s 6’10

After 22-23 I think it’s wise we take a deep breath and just wait. All good things come to those who wait, so sayeth the Hoop Gods.

Agree with much of this. A lot to be excited about, plenty of time to get hyped when the commitments start rolling in. But I'm pleased to see our name in lights again.

Here is an article that ranks the nicknames.  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-basketball/news/robbie-avila-nicknames-cream-abdul-jabbar/df900acb04b9a2fef4662980#:~:text=Cream Abdul-Jabbar,-This one is&text=This will be the nickname, making those T-shirts first%3F

I have some quibbles with the article's rankings.  I'd put Larry Blurred/Blurrd above Larry Nerd.  Nerd feels too derogatory and not cheeky/fun to me.  I agree that Cream the best:

    1. It matches his position.  Avila is a center & Abdul-Jabbar was a center.
    2. Cream works on 2 levels both is complexion and his body type.
    3. It is not ISU specific like Larry Blurred/Nerd so it can travel with him better to SLU.

That all being said, I'd love some SLU specific nicknames.  I was going to save this analysis for if/when he officially commits to SLU, but what the heck.  I'm excited about it now.  Some of these are admittedly terrible.  I'm just spitballin.

    1. Wheezy Ed
    2. Avilliken - H/T to MMP on Twitter
    3. JordPair (of goggles) Jett
    4. Specs Sinquefield - think we can get Rex to dump in some NIL if we pump this one up?
    5. Willie Read - I actually love this one & it makes me even more sad that Willie's SLU tenure was cut short or it would be a phenomenal one
    6. The St. Louis Ram(bis)
    7. Anthony BonNerd
    8. Jake For(eyes)ter
    9. DJ For(eyes)man
    10. Horace Grant Gehlen - former walk-on Grant Gehlen I think actually went by Gus, so probably no.
    11. Horace (Grant) Dixon - anyone remember Ho Dixon?  Soderberg really couldn't recruit.
    12. Darrin Clarke Kent - he's not from MN and not a huge disappointment, so probably not
    13. Buddy Holly Brehmer - Brehmer was the coach after Bennington / before Bob Polk, probably a no on this one
    14. Robbie Guillaume - Robert Guillaume (voice of Rafiki) attended SLU & wore glasses

    Some deep cuts

Has Popovich called Kentucky recommending Ahearn yet? That's probably the best they can do over there, and honestly, we can give Ahearn a few years of experience at a smaller school before we hire him away when Schertz leaves us for the NBA.

I’m confused. Thought we didn’t have lights.

We have lights that clearly don’t work properly and present a safety hazard. Which is why they haven’t been turned on and should have been replaced. Don’t be obtuse.

exactly.  while so many have written off Chris May, he didnt get to this position in his career to sit back and not prepare for the possiblities and inevitables.   i see no reason he wouldnt have been developing alternatives and scenarios.   i am also sure if he was smart he would be at minimum feeling out the whales for the program and getting input and feelings and continuing to develop those relationships.

last, he likely had an implementation plan that he could more or less insert the winning name into the scenario.   you are all foolish to believe he would not be ready to react to not only save his own job, but more importantly save the Billikens.   right now it appears that is what i believe happened and i thank Chris May completely.   We are lucky we have the boosters we have and the leadership and assertiveness that Chris May delivered.

He cleaned up his own mess. I am glad he has apparently found another gear. Hopefully this new gear includes treating employees and all student athletes with the same gratitude he demands of them.
