Ford's habit of benching players with 2 fouls has cost us games in the past and it will cost us games in the future. It doesn't do any good to bench one of your key players for long periods of the first half (saving them for later in the game) when it contributes to the game getting out of hand. Ford at least brought Pickett back in the 1st half last night.
And Pickett ended up with only 2 fouls for the game. Not sure if CF has a set rule to always sit a player at least a few minutes with 2 fouls in 1H, but I think you need to trust your best and experienced players (including Pickett) to play smart. If they eventually foul out, so be it. I would only sit Collins for rest purposes, never due to his foul situation.
All that being said, almost every coach does the same as CF. My CYC coaching experience says otherwise

I'll see how the season plays out. Still a long way to go. If we fall flat in conference season and conference tourney then all possibilities will be considered by AD May. If the Tillett hire is any indication, I'm not hopeful we'd improve our situation with a new coach.

stuck on a plane with limited bandwidth. relying on MBMers for game updates!

A few observations from an extremely solid opener:
- Franco looked to pass more often. The competition from Forester will make both players better
- Pickett fits right in. He's another player, like Thatch, that can help in many, many ways
- I had forgotten that Perkins' shot is so smooth. It was awesome watching his return.
- Glad Jimmer kept shooting and started hitting them. Shooters gotta shoot.
- So many players hungry for rebounds.
- Yuri's 14 assists to 0 TO's is insane. Much better ball movement than last year.
- Parker will be really good. Natural scorer.
- This year's gonna be fun!

The wizards are in the mode of trying to make their drafted guys look like they were not dreadful draft picks. Too bad they are. Davis drafted in front of Memphis Duren alone should have everyone fired. I honestly think a group of college basketball fans could form a better personnel department than the Wiz.
Torch, Pistol and I would never have drafted Davis/Deni/Rui, any of these scrubs.
Goodwin outplaying Deni and Davis by a large margin probably will result in him getting less minutes in that cover-your-ass-personnel department. Can't have the G-League guy looking better than our top ten pick.
Johnny Davis had 3 fouls in 3 mins and looks like he does not belong on a basketball court. I have never seen anything like it. I need to go back and re-watch Wisconsin games from last year.
Goodwin better play minutes again tonight. For some reason I do not think he will.
you were correct. Goodwin DNP.

Mavbe 1 or more of the incoming 3 frosh will make an impact?

Is Haase still available? or did he commit somewhere?

Belmont adds Nashville to the conference. That would be fun.

Attention SLU Men's basketball Program:
Your loyal fans are in dire need of some good news. Or do an interview with Stu on how SLU basketball is still on course for great things ahead.

Redirecting $1 million of booster money going to the head coach to NIL would give you $100,000 each for ten players.
Does NIL money negate the great recruiters? Could someone like Soderberg (not a good recruiter, but a good bench coach) now have a greater chance for success if he had boosters willing to handout NIL money?

Let's see if Ford can find a pass first PG in the portal. We have plenty of scorers with Gibson, Perkins, Parker, Okoro, etc.
We'd be in a worse situation if Yuri got hurt during next season.
We still have a ton of talent. Yuri took his game to another level this past season. Hopeful Ford will find someone who will do the same.

Coach Ford quote from Stu's postgame article:
"We have to have a group obsessed with getting better in the offseason behind the scenes.”
I hope he means this applies to the coaching staff as well.

A lot of this is due to Xs and Os. You can have talent but if they don’t have a system they’re gonna rip your heart out.
This. Travis should at least bring in an assistant coach that can cover some of his coaching deficiencies

And on the offensive side, our offense doesn't generate enough open 3s because we completely abandoned the inside-out pass since French

While I'd love to see Yuri get more assist records, I'd also like to see a more balanced, ball movement offense. I don't really care who gets the assists, points, blocks or rebounds as long as we win.

anyone remember Corey Tate's playing style at Mizzou? He was a tough matchup assignment and did all the things needed to win. I see a lot of Corey Tate in Fred Thatch.

Gibby missed his first 5 shots, then made 5 in a row. The maturation of a sniper. 3 more years of Gibby plus 2 more years of Thatch and Yuri. Let's enjoy the ride!

Coming in second would be the players like Cassidy and Conklin that got their masters in 4 years.
Paul Eckerle and Ted Mimlitz both became medical doctors.

Rammer isn’t exactly credible when it comes to officials and Majerus wouldn’t be the first coach to complain about officials. It’s ok to take off the tin foil hat. There isn’t a big conspiracy against Saint Louis basketball hahah
it's possible to have biased refereeing without a conspiracy.

Feel much better about this game than Bonnie#1 game. good response from Nesbitt Gibby and Thatch after having tough games on Round1. Bigs struggled tonight but that happens. All focus now on A10 tournament where it's anyone's tournament.

There’s a huge difference. With a zone that doesn’t have to extend itself, it’s almost impossible to get in the paint to find an open shooter or get the ball to a big inside.
Di you realize we had the 24th highest scoring offense in the country coming into the game. Teams have zoned us numerous times this year and generally we force them out of it by hitting shots. Yesterday we didn’t.
For a team with a coach that clearly can’t or hasn’t taught his team to attack a zone you’d think teams would do it more often
I agree that most of what Coach Ford is doing is working. We have far exceeded my expectations, especially after losing Javonte. That said, I'd love to see more ball movement. Yuri have almost 7x the number of assists than the next teammate. Here's the assist distributions for us, Davidson and Bonnies.

Is it really your assumption that they don’t work on how to beat a zone. Just because players don’t do something doesn’t mean they haven’t been taught.
I don't see much difference on how we attack any defense. The ball seems to be in Yuri's hands about 60% of every possession. Very little ball movement.

Tonight was such a lost opportunity. So much on the line before a huge crowd and we can't get it done. The 16-0 run at home simply cannot happen. I saw nothing tonight to make me think we'll win the rematch. Not gonna talk about any individual because I'm sure everyone on that team is hurting bad right now. That was a long ride home.

Tough shooting for Gibby but love that he got 8 rebounds. More of that!

I was all excited about all our returning players, but so far I think only Yuri has shown significant improvement. No one else had a Conklin summer.
Whitey Herzog used to put people in situations where they have a great chance for success. Going thru Okoro at the top of the key does NOT fit that management style.
CF's post game analysis was all about emotional stuff, like "intensity", "confidence", "energy". Nothing clinical about what we tried, and how Iona countered, and how we may need to adjust differently next time.
