While I do think they would be interested in playing a game in KC every year, they certainly do not currently have that in place as far as I am aware. I think the last time they played in Kansas City was as part of that CBE Hall of Fame Classic a few years back. That would be an interesting way of doing it and would give me an excuse to get out to Kansas City.

That's right. I looked back at their schedule and they played there a few times prior to the CBE games, but it was not every year.

SLU could probably ensure they get a guaranteed number of seats for SLU fans (2-3K) so it's not all black and gold.  You may even get a few Jayhawkers who'd come to cheer against Mizzou.

Increased visibility for whom?  We are already recruiting at an unprecedented level in the St. Louis area and attendance is on the rise.  We have a number of regional options that we can do a home and home with.  There isn't a reason to concede anything to Mizzou.

While the recruiting is currently on par with Mizzou, that could easily change.  And I meant visibility from a fanbase perspective.  We need to grow our fanbase and providing games that non-alumni fans want helps do that.

That is my point - if we are in a weak position then why go into it at all - we don't need the game so badly that we should ***** ourselves out to get it.  I am not interested in giving Missouri and its fan base anything to make them strut about.

Because it provides our program with increased visibility and I'm confident we'd beat them with some regularity.  Again, playing Pitt in NYC in front of 1,000 fans is nice and all, but I'd much prefer to play MU in a game that generates considerable local buzz each year.  If that means giving them an edge in the scheduling, so be it.

Why would you ever be interested in playing in KC?  You would be giving Missouri another home game and honestly we saw what happened when we played them on a neutral site in StL the last time - that game turned into basically a 50/50 fan split with no home advantage to us but gave them a non hostile environment.  No - we play in Columbia and then we play on our campus or forget it.

Because sometimes you have to give a little to get a little.  I dislike Mizzou as much as the next guy, but I also recognize that we are not in a great bargaining position.  Not because Mizzou is a vastly better program, but because they--like all the power 6+ conferences--can dictate scheduling since they can afford not to have a truly tough non-conference schedule.  Unless we get into the BEast, our negotiating power is reduced.

Gotcha. I was thinking an additional sprint center game for them.

I’d make the trip to KC but i imagine Mizzou would want a B12 team.

    let’s make it happen

I'm not sure who they played recently, but I recall Xavier coming to the Sprint Center a few years ago.

Edit - X was a tournament in Orlando.  It looks like they've played mostly B-12 games there.

I’d do this but I don’t see either school thinking the Sprint Center is a good idea

Mizzou plays at least one game (it's usually a decent one) in KC every year (satisfies their KC alumni).  I'd think this would be a decent sell for them, particularly if we're still good.

  7. I know we'd be giving them an inch here, but I'd be cool with a 4 game series - 1 in Columbia, 1 at the Fetz, 1 at Enterprise, 1 at Sprint Center (KC)

College basketball needs teams to play these types of regional games to generate buzz.  While I'm happy we got Pitt and Oregon State on the schedule, a game vs. Mizzou or Illinois would be much more fun.

So you mean two losses in regular season plus one in conference tourney OR three in regular season plus one conference tourney?

Yeah, 3 in the regular season. That said, if we were to lose 3 and then lose in the first round of the a-10 tourney, we’d be sweating bullets during the bracket show.

hopefully yesterday is a sign of good things to come.

Looking at the conference schedule, it potentially shapes up well for to get off to a strong start. Only three road games in January

    - The first two games are home games (URI & UMass).

    - Our first two road games are LaSalle and Fordham... enough said.

    - Then a home game against St. Joe's - good opportunity to get a big conference win.

    - At Duquesne

    - Closing out the month with two home games, Davidson & Richmond

Going undefeated in January would not seem to be out of the question. Our two toughest games are both at home. We'll need to start developing some consistency in order for it to happen - more efforts like yesterday and the Houston game.

February will be a bigger challenge with some tougher road games, but we'll have an opportunity to rack up some wins and begin to jell throughout the month of January.

How many more losses can we afford to still have a shot at an at-large bid?

    3 more at maximum.

Something I've always wondered. What contributes most to a home court advantage? Surely the crowd plays some sort of role, meaning a non-neutral crowd on a neutral court will be slightly more like a home game. But do the actual physical attributions of the court count more? Background behind the net, weird reflections from a particular light, etc?

Pomeroy did some analysis on this a few years back. IIRC, he attributed it mostly to the refs.

Sure, I understand the level of opponent, but on the other hand the coaching staff and fans tout our "athleticism."  Why not use it a bit more to try to generate some offense?

If you notice in my original post, I did not advocate using it against FSU, but I think we'll have a clear athletic advantage over most A-10 teams.

This.  Unfortunately, we're gonna play a number of teams in conference play who aren't all that much better than UNCC.

A couple of times last year, I speculated that Ford would press more this year. Considering he did it a bit last year with a team that had little depth, it figured we'd see the press a bit more this year. A couple of posters correctly pushed back that Ford WOULD not use the press this year because he doesn't like to. But I still contend that is what we SHOULD do more and last night confirmed it.

It's clear that we are not going to be a good offensive team in the half-court, so we have to find other ways to generate offense and the press is a good way to do it. Plus, Ford touts our team's athleticism, so why not push that advantage? We let inferior teams hang around, instead of trying to enforce our strengths on our opponents.

I'm not saying we should press the whole game, but hopefully this opens up Ford to the possibility to make it a regular part of our game plan. When we get into conference play, we'll have an athletic advantage over every A-10 team. Let's hope Wiley is healthy by the New Year and as we head into A-10 play, I would use a 9-man rotation in order to incorporate the press. I'd like to see Jacobs get a few minutes every game. He hasn't done much yet, but with his athleticism, he could help us with the press and give our other guards a breather. Will Ford be open to change?

I'm all for using it some against inferior teams/athletes.  Given that we will be the more athletic team in nearly all games going forward (sans FSU, maybe VCU and Dayton), we should use it at times when Thatch and Goodwin are both in the game.  Nasty duo.

The other thing that needs to happen is when teams press us, we need to push the ball to the basket immediately.  It drove me insane in the first half when we'd beat the press and then stop.  Go straight to the rim and punish them for pressing us.

I think that was Isabell's best all around game, he was great defensively. SLU really took care of the ball with only 8 turnovers. It was nice to see that play out of a timeout, Foreman to Bess on the baseline. Gordon needs to get the ball in his hands more inside. Three dogshit calls that stood out to me were 1) Bess getting called for a foul with 1 second left on the shot clock at the end of the first half, while going for the rebound, he didn't even touch the guy, this allowed them to grab a lead gping into half 2)the T on Bess, both players barely bumped each other, that had to be one of the weakest technical foul calls I've ever seen, this allowed Houston to cut their deficit from six to two 3) Foreman getting that foul call at the end was an absolute joke, giving them 2 free throws in place of the turnover. Both second half calls were made by the same ref. Those calls were huge in a close game like this.

I love college hoops, but the poor officiating is making the sport much more difficult to watch.   I hate being the guy blames the refs since we still should've won this game, but these 3 calls were about as bad as they come and, ultimately, impacted the outcome.

If he ends his career at 62% then I agree that is an improvement.  Yes I know the number of games is not the correct measurement but it does show  you  that the season is about a third over so to act like we have only played one or two games and call it a small sample size is not accurate either.  As far as looking at someone's high school stats as a sure indicator of what a kid will do in college is also not true - often we have seen players who shot 35% give or take behind the arc we have not seen that extrapolated necessarily to their college career.  Lets just agree that we all hope CG gets much better at FT shooting for his and ours sake.

Shooting a 3 in the college game is significantly different than in high school due to the level of opposing defenses. Shooting a FT, on the other hand, shouldn't vary all that much.

  15. The good thing with this team is that, outside of Bess, we haven't seen the best from pretty much anybody else on this roster.  Thatch and Gordon are having their moments, but they're still learning.  We know Goodwin, Foreman, and French can play better.  Wiley's hurt and I'm hopeful Isabelle will eventually find his role. 7-2 with an arrow that points up because of this team's immense potential is the positive.

The negative is that we need to win tough games very soon because the opportunities will be more limited in conference play.

It's only Dec. 5 but tonight seems like such a big game. It's the kind of tough game that at-large teams find a way to win.  Fletcher is a good player, so hopefully not at his best.  Goodwin really needs to step up and be better than he was against Seton Hall and Butler. We gotta kill them on the boards and do damage inside.

Whoever is being guarded by Bartley--seems likely it's Goodwin--will have a big night.

We win this game if we hold them under 40% from 3 and dominate inside. Still a very scary game.

It's a way of acknowledging their constituents' needs and concerns about the issues that affect them.

I'm pretty much all for this deal and I think some of the opposition by the public (as laid out by sluletthedogsouts) is silly, but I have little to no problem with some of the concerns brought up by the BOA.  Call it grandstanding if you will, but the structure of these lease agreements is critical to ensuring the city is not left holding the bag in 20ish years if the MLS goes under or the team decides STL can't support an MLS franchise.

It should be noted that we may still have the Rams if certain language regarding the stadium being in the top 25% of the league had just been left out of the lease agreement.  It should also be noted that the city had to spend a considerable amount of money upgrading Scottrade/Enterprise because someone wasn't smart enough 20+ years ago to ensure the tenant pays for the improvements and not the landlord.

Cities get bad deals when they don't negotiate and/or ask for various concessions.  This deal is already very good, but not carefully scrutinizing a project of this magnitude is just plain stupid.  I consider it progress that city leadership is learning from past mistakes.
