I can’t wait for 48 hours from now when we can actually look forward to SLU’s new coach and all the possibilities he brings, and not debate AM radio hosts and their feelings towards the Billikens. The last 3 weeks have felt like an eternity.

Let’s have a separate thread about local media, so I can pass it by. I’m more concerned about what happens if Schertz says thanks but no thanks. Then who?

  2. USC is supposedly trying to get Musselman from AR. If they get him, the opening at Arkansas would scare me about Schertz. There is no way we’d be able to compete with them unless this rumored MOU is real and would cost them to pay us for his change of mind. My guess is his agent is either angling for a better package with SLU or looking at some unknown P5 that may be looking. I guess he could also take the lifestyle route and stay at ISU. If he reneges on us, who’s out there? I sure hope we have a list of competent backups, or else the board will go ballistic. His comment about taking a day is a little bit of a red flag to my way of thinking.

If he is choosing Charleston, I have to think we could have brought him here.  Charleston is probably going to be paying him a lot less than we are going to pay Schertz.

Chareleston is a nice place to live. Beaches, historical district, and top drawer restaurants. Kelsey and Grant success drove fans into complete sellouts. Granted their arena has been upgraded but still holds only 4.5k. I’ve heard thru the grapevine the deal is done. CofC got some buyout $$$’s from UL, $1 to $1.5mm. And that Mack would make $1.5 mm. Also, rumor is that Mack told CofC to start a process to get into the A10. CofC fans are really excited over that. So am I, as I have a friend who holds 4 season tickets to the Cougars.

  4. Mack to CoC seems to be a real possibility. One of their alums told me Mack wants a commitment from the school to pursue joining the A10. He doesn’t want to get stuck in the CAA. Man, I’d love to see that and also add Belmont and Wichita St. Two divisions East and Midwest.

The fact Ford was never an assistant coach like Moser also contributed to this problem.

He should have worked with Pitino for a couple of years before he took the job at Campbell. Pitino is noted for developing players and fitting them to his systems and style of play. Ford would have benefited from his mentorship. Like Rick did under Al and Raymond’s.

  6. Travis’ do nothing no purpose clock eating weave handcuffed guys like TJ and Gibby from fully showing off their skills. TJ, because of his ability to sky, rarely got screens to shake his defender and get more layups and jams. Gibby got virtually no help either from screeners or inside out passes. After 8 years of watching Ford’s offense I still saw no rhyme or reason to it. It’s hard to understand how a guy who likely grew up with a basketball in his hands everyday never grasped the basic X’s and O’s.

  7. I grew up in Maine back in the 60’s when UConn played in the old Yankee Conf with the other 5 New England state U’s. They were nothing special ,although CT had some great HS players who went elsewhere. If they had played in the old 60’s MVC they would have been killed.

So, how did they become the UCLA of this century? Coaches! Calhoun was great. And now Hurley. Refresh my memory did Hurley ever do much at URI other than piss off the crowd? Yet, here they are sitting atop the world of college hoops. Point being, get the right guy, and just about any school can become a power.

Schertz does have his team do the weave??? THAT’S going to be a change!!!

Personally, I hope to never see it again. I’ve come to associate it with mediocre basketball.

Read my post. I said no weave.

  9. After watching ISU run its offense it would appear Gibby would be wise to stay. Under Ford, surprisingly, there seemed no sets to get him open for 3’s. To Gibby’s credit he got himself open for layups on the occasional cuts to the hoop. He’d get those in Schertz’s system plus many open looks for 3’s. We shall see soon what he decides as of today he’s listed as the 7th most desirable guy in the portal.

  10. So, why would Schertz pass on UL? Big time traditional winner with great fans, great facilities, great boosters. My best guess is the road back in the ACC, as it stands today, is gonna be a lot tougher than returning SLU to the top of the A10. He’s got some good players and a good system, but are the guys he may bring with him ACC level players like the top programs, ie Duke, UNC, Cuse, et al, who typically land top 25 recruiting classes? Also, UL won’t be too patient, say a 3-4 year rebuild. At SLU and the A10 his pathway to success is a little smoother. If he’s thinking long term career, SLU just might give him a better shot at a P6 job in 2-3 years. If Kelsey falls flat at UL and gets the ax after 3 years he’ll likely be treated as a retread and end up like Ford after OSU fired him. Just speculation on my part, but this might have been his thought process.

  11. CofC fans are gonna be devastated. From what I’ve heard UL will have to pay Kelsey’s buyout somewhere between $2.5 to $4.0 mm. This is a semi splash hire if true Kelsey turned down USC last year. He’s been a hot up and comer for a few years now.

It doesn’t really matter who their top choice is if they don’t want to spend money for the buyout 🤷‍♂️ sucks to suck for them otherwise

I don’t think $4mm means that much to them. Again, you have to watch the clock here. No move by UL is going to scream we want Schertz!
