Posting up guards is what Majerous loved to do. But for that to work well, you need stretch bigs, or the driving guard runs into a big defender.  For Yuri and Goodwin to be on the floor at the same time, at least one of them needs to be an outside threat, or we will see packed in zones again this year.

But you have a stretch 4 (jury still out on this?) with Perkins who can space the floor. So, if Goodwin does make his way into the post to go one on one at any given time, I like a rotation that includes Yuri, Perkins, plus Thatch/Weaver/Hankton/Jimerson etc. Put French in the short corner on offensive rebound duties and Goodwin could clean up 3-4 easy buckets a game on this. It's obviously not that simple but I don't think Goodwin being in a post up situation will automatically cause the defense to pack it in like last year. If they do, I like our odds from the perimeter more so this year than years previous, or at least last year.

  2. Goodwin moves better without the ball than he does trying to create offense with the ball in his hands. Slashing, put backs and superb offensive rebounding for a guard. He's a more than competent enough ball handler to securely get the ball across half court and get us into a half court offense of some sort, but at the end of the day, I would still rather see Yuri given the reigns early on for the point. Trial by fire, prepare for the end of the year. It's not like we don't know what Goodwin can do. If Yuri is a dumpster fire at the PG position (which would surprise me), it goes to Goodwin, maybe at worst costing you a game or two in non-conference.

This may have already been stated, but something I would love to see this year is Goodwin running as a two and looking for post up oppurtunities against guards. He was a big in high school, can move well in the post and is creative in finding shot oppurtunities from down in the post. With some of the smaller guards in the A-10, he could be a real problem for the defense. Possibly could offer Yuri an easier shot at running the offense because the best defensive guard will have to take Goodwin.

Maybe the answer here in all of this is that Goodwin isn't a PG period, no matter what his role is claimed publically by Ford, and his talents just aren't defined by a single position. Goodwin does every other thing the team needs to win in any given game. He's a true on the court leader.

Why can't  JG score more from offensive rebounds? Is he capped at a certain number per game? Upperclassmen have a tendency  to become more physically dominant,  and make a lot of the chippies they missed as freshman and sophomores.   I'm looking for gigantic things from  Goodwin and French their last two years.

His role on the team. I would say if he continues to be the primary ball handler running the offense, his rebound numbers certainly are capped in averages. Talked about it in the preview article, but if he gets to a 2 guard role he has a good chance at increasing his rebound production because he can focus on it.

What criteria did you use to come up with the projection figures?   Not only Thatch with less ppg than last year but Hankton (3 points) with twice the points of Bell (1.5 points)?   Do you have Hankton playing twice the minutes of Bell?  Jimerson with less points than Weaver and Yuri?   Point will roughly follow and correlate with minutes played, right?   Do you have minutes played projections

Actually responding to this post however, my thinking with Thatch is that he will always be the 4th, maybe 5th best scorer on the floor, at least based off of what we saw last year. I expect that unless Fred is wide open, or is driving to the basket, he probably won't score a ton when there are more reliable and important scoring options on the floor. I gave him less points per game average because I like Travis' recruiting class and I don't see Thatch looking to score as much this year, opting instead to focus primarily on his defense allowing his scoring averages to drop. He can very easily prove me wrong too.

Hankton showed an ability to shoot the three last year, and more importantly a willingness to pull the trigger. It's not unbelievable that he could put up even 6.0 ppg because he comes in and knocks down two quick 3s. Put it this way, I am looking for him to put in a 3 a game this year, which shouldn't be a tall order. The points relationship to Bell more comes from me not knowing what Ford is planning to run in the offense. Maybe there is a two big lineup and Bell gets solid minutes. Maybe Bell just suppliments French for breaks here and there. I think the second option is most likely to me, meaning that Jimmy wouldn't have a ton of oppurtunities to score, but again he could prove me wrong. Not unbelievable that he would put a bucket or two a game in and average 4 or maybe 6 ppg.

Jimerson was another player who suffered from my  lack of feel for what Ford is going to do. My feeling is that Jimerson could look the same as Hankton, one or two 3s a game type of guy, but he won't play as much as Weaver or Yuri. More minutes for each of them made it seem like common sense that they would probably score more on average, given that as @Pistol pointed out in the blog Weaver has a quick trigger and confidence in his shot, and Yuri has shown an ability to score in high school but who's to say how that translates. Weaver is the one who I could be hugely wrong on here.

Lastly, no I don't have minutes projections. I looked at some stats, looked at some videos, and based off of what we know about the returners, I made an educated guess on primary stats such as points, rebounds, and assists. It's a rough idea of what I think this year will look like for SLU.

I also predict that Fred Thatch will score more than 2.5ppg. The article also predicts KC Hankton to score 3ppg.

I would bet a large sum of money that Fred Thatch will score more than 2.5ppg. I would also bet a large sum of money that Fred Thatch scores more ppg than KC Hankton

Overall, the article is great! Thanks again for both of your great work! I enjoyed reading.

    Very fair point.

I used punctuation in "Collin's" for a reason. Go back and look at what I was saying.

For the second time, the number projections were done by Collin.

For the second time, my contribution to the piece is limited to the blurbs quoted directly under my name and nothing else.

I can't be blamed for reading comprehension errors.

I did think I made that clear. Maybe not. Apologies if this was misunderstood.

I think the projections for Thatch are way low, but that's what makes an article like this great- it stirs conversation.

Hard to say what Thatch will do this year. He's super atheltic, can hit an open jump shot, but his game obviously needs some work. With guys like Jimerson, Weaver, and Perkins coming in, do we really even need that much in production from Thatch? At least points wise.

  10. Did not realize anyone was paying attention. Had written the article with @Pistol a little while back, and was still waiting on some contributions for it so we hadn't posted it here. That being said, the numbers projections coming from my point of view was what those guys could potentially do. Reasonable expectations. I didn't think that hard on it but probably looking at whether the numbers add up makes more sense for future reference. Hope you guys enjoy the read, I will try to keep working on more of these as I can. - Collin

Some very cool stuff in here but honestly a lot is just underwhelming. Some of the packages including hotel and sh!t are nice but most of it is just random. They really should focus more on experiences like the Honorary Coaching Experience with Lisa Stone.

Just to clarify things. Have you read all of Martin's GOT books up to the time he stopped publishing them? I really do not know if you are correct and those two lines are entirely and completely inaccurate or not. I guess the only way to find out is to wait for him to write the next book and to see what he says in it.

Sad I just happened into this thread late. It was my understanding that he is intentionally (or just by chance) waiting to publish the books because he wants to take the ending a completely different direction. I am not by any means an overly dedicated Thrones fan, just a Sunday night couch fan, but from the more dedicated fans I converse with, this has seemed to be the prevailing thought.

Disclaimer: I haven't listened to this particular episode yet and I gave the Podcast 5 stars when I rated it.  It is really great and I appreciate everything you put into it.  My one critique would be to try to tone down the language where possible.  It's one thing for me to who doesn't care and is listening to it on headphones while mowing my lawn, but I'd imagine that it turns some people off or doesn't allow someone to listen to it in a setting where they can't have casual swearing playing over speakers (ex: at work, with their kids around, etc.).  It is just something that is going to limit your audience without really adding anything or attracting more people IMO.

I can understand that when you're interviewing someone that the language will sometimes go explicit and you can't help it.  In those circumstances, it is unavoidable and you can throw an explicit tag or try to bleep out language.  However, it seemed to me that most of the language was just Zach casually swearing.  Understandable that is his normal way of talking and might take some practice to change.  However, it seems like something that could be avoided with a little practice.

Appreciate the feedback. We've tried to be conscious of that, but where it comes out, we at the very least hope we making you aware it is present. Thank you for continuing to follow, we truly appreciate all of the responses we get. You guys help make the show grow by letting us know what you would rather see, or how we can possibly make the show better.

The Drejaj interview was great. Highlights for me:

-His recruitment process. Forgot he was a late qualifier, and I hadn't heard the story of his OV before. Soderberg's recruiting style was crazy to me.

-Playing in Kosovo with his brother, and then playing Slamball - although I don't go quite as deep on the latter as @billikenfan05.

-The Otis Livingston story, and his perspective as a coach - his quote about trusting your own eyes and not getting caught up with a recruit's offers or status or ranking. That's real wisdom.

-Tons of other small anecdotes in there, and I love his Jersey attitude and accent. This was fun for me; we overlapped for 3 of his 4 years at SLU.

Would have loved to see that pick up game as Drejaj is playing for a scholarship.

  15. Episode 23:

    - Baseball/Softball

    - Sit down with @Pistol to talk basketball recruiting

    - Billiken golf classic

Mild language warning, that is why we used the explicit tag for this episode. Thank you once again to @Pistol for joining the show, had a really great sit down, about 20-25 minutes covering a wide range of recruiting topics (2019-2021 recruiting classes, including the current transfer market) for Billiken's basketball.
