  5. For the record, Jordan improved his shot from 3 last year to 26.3%, up 3% on a higher volume of shots (19-81 in '17-'18, 25-95 in '18-'19), so it does stand to reason he will continue to marginally improve his three point shooting to the 30% you ask or close to it. I just don't want to see that become a primary focus of his game and I don't believe it will. He is his most successful in short corner, finding gaps for the offensive rebounds, or most importantly cutting to the basket. But I believe it was the George Mason game at home last year where he put up 24 points on 9/15 shooting, some of which came from midrange shots and not just 2 footers. There's more than one way to force the defense to come out and guard you.
  6. A10 talk has made some interesting decisions on their list so far, but oh well. Based on T Ford's interview with Frank for the Hit and Run with Frank Cusamano, I would bet that Goodwin has improved on his free throw shooting as much as anyone else, but he will never truly be a three point shooter nor would I want him sitting out there. Would love to see his midrange game become more consistent.
  7. Fair point, but still lost heavy contributors. Point being in that rant, Bonaventure and the Billikens aren't that much different, and if you are ranking teams it can go either way. At this point, any ranking out there is fairly subjective outside of maybe the top four and bottom 2? Its a competitive league to say the least.
  8. Here comes a book: We talked about this on the podcast today. I homered it even more because I'm not sure I buy that Duquesne is significantly better than us. I would guess we play them to a 1-1 series split in conference, but I also would like to believe we post a better conference record. Dukes lost their best statistical player in Eric Williams Jr. to Oregon, so now it's Sincere Carry, who will still be a nightmare to deal with for the next 3 years I have a feeling, and then it's a pair of Juniors Michael Hughes (11.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG in '18-'19) and Marcus Weathers (10 PPG, 6.4 RPG in '18-'19). So what I am getting at in the most round about way is we are probably very even with Duquense, should be a great matchup with them this year. I personally would like to say we are definitely better because I know the talent we possess, but haven't seen the Billikens actually play yet and it's very young talent. Anyone putting Bonaventure above SLU, after losing 3 of their top 4 guys in averages for scoring from '18-'19 (Stockard, Griffin, Poyser) is disappointing but not incredibly shocking if you really break it down. They will be leaning on new young guys as much as SLU, where we return two high level Juniors in Goodwin and French, Bonaventure returns two high level Sophomores in Lofton and Osunniyi. Bonaventure went out and got a transfer Junior from Miami of Ohio Jalen Adaway who averaged 7.5 ppg (8 ppg according to the Bonnies website, 7.5 according to Miami U) and 5 rpg, but will be sitting out this year for transfer rules. Amadi Ikpeze is the lone senior for Bonaventure. Standing 6'10 240, he averaged 2.7 ppg and 2.4 rpg in only 11 minutes per game last year, so not a huge upperclassmen factor. This biggest factor to how good the Bonnies will be comes down to Junior transfer guard Matt Johnson who transferred from Howard University, where he 14.3 ppg and 4.3 rpg in '18-'19. It does not appear he will be sitting out, so he could be adding the boost to their rankings, but still a little surprising. Richmond features 4 returning juniors who all averaged double digits in points, with Grant Golden being one of the better players in the conference period, but maybe not the most athletic, impressive, etc. Would be shocked if Richmond doesn't finish top 8, but as you can see between the Dukes, the Bonnies, the Bills, and the Spiders there is a middle of the pack log jam with some really good teams, not to mention VCU, Davidson, Dayton, and Rhode Island. Tough Conference this year. Biggest takeaway here is that I'm probably too over confident and we are way too young for any preseason rankings to actually matter. I'll take the under on 7 losses in conference personally, not objectively. Objectively, I still don't see this team going sub .500 in conference, but 9-9 or 10-8 seems fairly realistic for such a young team. Very much middle of the pack, but still very much competitive. This year will be a learning curve.

  10. If Kate Upton shows up at a SLU basketball game to sell beer, you better believe I'm paying that $10. But under normal circumstances, I would agree.
  11. Obviously K-State has been picked up by ESPN+, but it was relayed to me prior to Carter's announcement that the K-State game would be on FSMW. Something obviously changed, not that big of a deal, but an interesting "turf war" for television coverage on some of these games. I wondered if the Big 12 network had a contract that would keep FSMW out for that game, turns out there certainly is: "On Wednesday, the Big 12 announced a new digital rights agreement with ESPN. Beyond giving ESPN the rights to the Big 12 championship game every year until 2024, this new agreement also moves some Big 12 inventory to ESPN+, a paid subscription service. All of the Big 12’s men’s basketball games that weren’t already on an ESPN network — plus a slew of non-revenue sports, spring football games, and some actual football games — will now be on ESPN+."
  12. A quick note: Thank you to everyone who listens to us, we just hit 5,000 downloads and counting in less than a year of doing the show. We greatly appreciate the support.

  14. As we talked about on the podcast, there is not much that Giacolleti can do to hurt this program quite honestly. It is Travis Ford's team, he is the decision maker. He is going to be a guy who helps get the most out of players in practice, maybe a voice of reason when someone like Ford or Tate is making life hell. Simply put, Giacolleti is not going to bring about the downfall of SLU men's basketball. Comes with a good pedigree of experience at bigger schools. An interesting side note, Giacolleti has been doing color commentary for college sports between his time at Drake and his hiring by SLU for anyone interested in learning more.

  18. I know his height changes on a regular basis which is why I said jury still out. But someone who has a height ranging anywhere between 6-5/6-7 who can shoot sounds a whole lot like a stretch 4 to me. http://www.slubillikens.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=27200&ATCLID=211781596 link for the 6’7 listing
  19. But you have a stretch 4 (jury still out on this?) with Perkins who can space the floor. So, if Goodwin does make his way into the post to go one on one at any given time, I like a rotation that includes Yuri, Perkins, plus Thatch/Weaver/Hankton/Jimerson etc. Put French in the short corner on offensive rebound duties and Goodwin could clean up 3-4 easy buckets a game on this. It's obviously not that simple but I don't think Goodwin being in a post up situation will automatically cause the defense to pack it in like last year. If they do, I like our odds from the perimeter more so this year than years previous, or at least last year.
  20. Goodwin moves better without the ball than he does trying to create offense with the ball in his hands. Slashing, put backs and superb offensive rebounding for a guard. He's a more than competent enough ball handler to securely get the ball across half court and get us into a half court offense of some sort, but at the end of the day, I would still rather see Yuri given the reigns early on for the point. Trial by fire, prepare for the end of the year. It's not like we don't know what Goodwin can do. If Yuri is a dumpster fire at the PG position (which would surprise me), it goes to Goodwin, maybe at worst costing you a game or two in non-conference. This may have already been stated, but something I would love to see this year is Goodwin running as a two and looking for post up oppurtunities against guards. He was a big in high school, can move well in the post and is creative in finding shot oppurtunities from down in the post. With some of the smaller guards in the A-10, he could be a real problem for the defense. Possibly could offer Yuri an easier shot at running the offense because the best defensive guard will have to take Goodwin. Maybe the answer here in all of this is that Goodwin isn't a PG period, no matter what his role is claimed publically by Ford, and his talents just aren't defined by a single position. Goodwin does every other thing the team needs to win in any given game. He's a true on the court leader.
  21. His role on the team. I would say if he continues to be the primary ball handler running the offense, his rebound numbers certainly are capped in averages. Talked about it in the preview article, but if he gets to a 2 guard role he has a good chance at increasing his rebound production because he can focus on it.
  22. I wonder what Weaver's role will end up being. I thought Dion Wiley immediately, a bench player who can have some above average scoring games sporadically off the bench.
  23. Actually responding to this post however, my thinking with Thatch is that he will always be the 4th, maybe 5th best scorer on the floor, at least based off of what we saw last year. I expect that unless Fred is wide open, or is driving to the basket, he probably won't score a ton when there are more reliable and important scoring options on the floor. I gave him less points per game average because I like Travis' recruiting class and I don't see Thatch looking to score as much this year, opting instead to focus primarily on his defense allowing his scoring averages to drop. He can very easily prove me wrong too. Hankton showed an ability to shoot the three last year, and more importantly a willingness to pull the trigger. It's not unbelievable that he could put up even 6.0 ppg because he comes in and knocks down two quick 3s. Put it this way, I am looking for him to put in a 3 a game this year, which shouldn't be a tall order. The points relationship to Bell more comes from me not knowing what Ford is planning to run in the offense. Maybe there is a two big lineup and Bell gets solid minutes. Maybe Bell just suppliments French for breaks here and there. I think the second option is most likely to me, meaning that Jimmy wouldn't have a ton of oppurtunities to score, but again he could prove me wrong. Not unbelievable that he would put a bucket or two a game in and average 4 or maybe 6 ppg. Jimerson was another player who suffered from my lack of feel for what Ford is going to do. My feeling is that Jimerson could look the same as Hankton, one or two 3s a game type of guy, but he won't play as much as Weaver or Yuri. More minutes for each of them made it seem like common sense that they would probably score more on average, given that as @Pistol pointed out in the blog Weaver has a quick trigger and confidence in his shot, and Yuri has shown an ability to score in high school but who's to say how that translates. Weaver is the one who I could be hugely wrong on here. Lastly, no I don't have minutes projections. I looked at some stats, looked at some videos, and based off of what we know about the returners, I made an educated guess on primary stats such as points, rebounds, and assists. It's a rough idea of what I think this year will look like for SLU.
