  1. As many of you may know, there are three places in the world where the early 20th Century Billiken craze still lives on.  Those places are St. Louis (because of it being SLU's mascot), Alaska, and Japan.  I just recently got back from a trip to Alaska.  In almost every store that featured local artistry there were carved Billikens for sale.  When I walked in and asked "do you have Billikens?" there was someone in each such shop, usually the owner, that knew exactly what I was talking about and led me to their selection.   Most Billikens I saw were carved out of soapstone or jade and were the size of or smaller than the average person's thumb.  They were tiny.  There was one store, Tom's Treasures, in Ketchikan that sold much larger Billikens that were carved out of whale bone.  I bought this little beauty from Tom's Treasures. He's about five inches tall.

If anyone is going to Alaska, I would recommend that shop if you are wanting to pick up a Billiken.  There were a few others that were this same size, including one in the window display that I almost bought instead of this one after finding it last minute.

Next season's schedule will be much stronger.

This year's schedule certainly isn't going to be a draw for casual fans, and I feel bad for season ticket holders. The draw is going to be the style of play and the players themselves. We will be favored to win every non-conference home game. Not much margin for error this season.

I definitely understand this sentiment, but keep in mind that Jimerson and Swope are out of eligibility.  Avila will be a senior.  If we just miss making the tournament because of our weak schedule, what are the odds that Avila is okay with that happening to him two years in a row?  How likely will he be to come back and "try again" as opposed to cashing in on a bigger NIL deal with school that doesn't have problems with creating a schedule that gives them a chance at the tournament?  Then, if miss the tournament because of a weak schedule and lose Avila, Jimerson and Swope, will it matter if next year's schedule is much stronger?  This schedule is very concerning to me.

  3. I don't really care all that much about Berhalter, but all of this is just cover for the fact that our players have disappointed.  How much ability does a national team coach really have to improve a team?  After the Copa America debacle, I kept hearing talking heads say that the team hasn't showing improvement.  These guys play 11 months out of the year for a club team and them fly in for a month of playing for their national team.  I'm not sure what a coach is supposed to do to improve these players in that short amount of time.  The much bigger concern coming out of what happened in Copa America is that our players didn't perform.

  4. Francis Okoro - Francis played the 2023-24 season for Nevesis in Lithuania.  He averaged 8.6 ppg and 8.0 rpg.

Another interesting sidenote on this one.  Courtney Ramey was his teammate on Nevesis in 2023-24.  He averaged 10.6 ppg.

Season: 2023-2024 (Lithuania ) Team Summary

  5. Brian Conklin is listed on the roster of the Ibakari Robots in the Japanese league.  However, his last game with them was on January 27, 2024.  He only scored 4 points in that game in 25 minutes.  Prior to that, he was averaging somewhere in the teens as far as points per game.  Not sure if he was injured in that game, got cut afterwards, or retired, but I don't see where he has played a game since.

As a very interesting side note, the last game that Conklin played on January 27 was against the Hiroshima Dragonflies.  That's Dwayne Evans' team.  Dwayne scored 17 points and had 8 rebounds in that game against Conklin.

  6. Not sure why I looked this up, but I did.  Kwamain just wrapped up his 11th year of professional basketball in May.  He played 2023-24 for CSO Voluntari in the Romanian league.  He averaged 8.0 ppg and 4.2 apg.

In his career, he has played in the Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, France, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, and Romania.  What a way to spend your 20s and 30s.

    EDIT:

Wanted to add a current picture.  Like his age 30 something look...

Wow, that was a huge mistake 😃.  The fact that there are (at least) 7 tiers of a Danish football is startling.  I think they have less population than the state of Missouri.

I think many of their leagues are similar to local amateur leagues that used to exist in St. Louis decades ago.  I wish those sorts of leagues were still active.  I guess that's more of a societal change in how things operate in the US presently.

  8. I think going forward we can expect to retain something like 5 or 6 guys a year, we will sign 3 or 4 high school kids and supplement the rest with transfers, meaning 3 to 5 transfers.  This year was an anomaly with the number of transfers given the coaching change.

If paying $15 million per year makes sense for 10 ppg/4 rpg then count in the maniac's section.  If you want to measure success by contracts, be my guest.   Success to me is multiple NBA titles and inclusion in the Hall of Fame.  Toppin will likely get neither.

Taj, to put it in perspective, the Pacers signed Pascal Siakam to a four year contract totaling $189.5 million.  That's $47.375M per year.  He averaged 21.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season.  Toppin is contributing about half the points and half the rebounds of Siakam, but getting less than 1/3 of the his salary.  My point is only that the money is the NBA is crazy.  Only having to pay 15 players as opposed to 20 in the NHL, 26 in MLB, and 53 in the NFL, makes it easier to give out bigger contracts.

Also, the NBA draft is much more of a crap shoot than most people think.  Lets look at the guys drafted in the Top 8 in 2020.

    1. Anthony Edwards - clearly a star and a great pick, averaged 25.9 ppg in 2024

    2. James Wiseman - averaged 7.1 ppg in 2024

    3. Lamello Ball - averaged 23.9 ppg in 2024

    4. Patrick Williams - averaged 10.0 ppg in 2024

    5. Isaac Okoro - averaged 9.4 ppg in 2024

    6. Onyeka Okongwu - averaged 10.2 ppg in 2024

    7. Killian Hayes - averaged 6.9 ppg in 2024

    8. Obi Toppin - averaged 10.3 ppg in 2024

In 2024 Toppin had the 3rd best points per game of any of the guys drafted in the Top 8 draft picks in 2020.
