Today's announcement of Dotzler kind of goes with the flow of what I am saying.  He won't break the bank.  Sure there is BVF left but the % already spent on the big three is unknown, except to a very small number of people.

NIL has expanded to several facets.  You have the Pay for Play pot (pretty much BVF), the Billiken Exchange where you can pretty much do what you want (and which can have a NIL piece in it) and then somewhat associated with that, individual NIL deals such as Jimerson's clothing deal last season and  Avila's Chicago White Sox deal, plus the expected googles deal he is reportedly working on.

This has been an expensive year for Billiken Sports.  You have the Ford and staff buyouts, the salary for Schertz plus his expanded staff, and then the BVF.  Individual sponsors going heavy into the Exchange or other avenues are certainly there also.

Yep, and I'm fine with anyone spending big $$$ to enhance Billikens basketball.  I don't care how the SLU AD budget is being balanced.  That is someone else's problem.  I want to see fast-paced, team-oriented, winning basketball, and I think that is exactly what we will get.

I bet they reached a deal like Texas and Marquette on Shaka.

So if they did reach a deal that probably means UK has the replacement lined up.

Pitino is still kicking. But I wonder who they want?  Oats?  Beard? Pearl? Jay Wright comes back?

Oats or Beard would be an amazing hire for Kentucky.

They'd let him out of the contract for sure.  He'd be smart to jump. Going to be toxic for him in Lexington.

If Arky wants Calipari, will UK would force them to pay at least a portion of the buyout?  My guess is a much reduced buyout

  4. The popularity of women's college basketball is soaring.  I hope the Billikens can be a big part of it.  There's a lot to like about Coach Tillett besides the awesome A10 tourney run last year.  I think she makes great halftime adjustments.  I also like her overall in-game demeanor.  Recruiting prowess remains an unknown.  This off-season is very important for them.  We need an influx of talent.

Frank also has it on good authority that Popovich, Billy Donovan and Bill Self reached out to Chaifetz urging the powers that be at SLU to interview Ahern

At least they only said "interview Ahearn" rather than "hire Ahearn"

My immediate thought is why would any of those guys have the best interest in SLU in mind?

And no one will disparage their reputation if Ahearn would subsequently fail because they were "just looking out for a friend".

When the team is 14th in conference "we played better" is irrelevant. Improvement is not acceptable; this team has to have an entire fundamental shift in the gameplay. That means a new team.

The new coach will decide who he wants to pursue from the old roster.  Spoonhour "re-recruited" Highmark and Claggett even though the team had only won 5 games (and Highmark was not a renowned defender).  Spoonball was very different from Grawer's style.

If the new coach cleans house, so be it.  If he re-recruits some of the existing players, that's great.  Either way, the new coach will be incentivized to win and will do what it takes to get there.

I disagree about can’t defend- I think GJ stepped his game this year and passing, defense, rebounding were team leading in the last 10 games- he did go through an offensive lull when he was getting roughed up by our league opponents- he worked his way out if it. As SVB asserted himself things improved for Jimerson- our other bigs were too soft

I agree Gibby's defense has improved.  I think during the latter part of the season, we were a better team overall with SVB on the floor.

imo this is a true win- win situation.  I'll be drinking beers with a smile regardless of the outcome.

I feel the same way.  I want our players to do great and experience success.  The only downside of a broadcast is when the announcer does the obligatory excuse-rant for CFord when they know it has been said already a million times.  Just call the game and focus on the players.

I don't see any evidence of hard work in practice. They're not just bad on defense, they're lazy and unprepared. Holmes sliced through the paint and instead of moving their feet, guys move their arms and reach in on him. Brea coasted down the floor in transition without a defender within 25 feet. There are just basic defensive principles and scouting notes that either aren't being taught or are being completely ignored, because they certainly aren't evident in the game.

The coaches and players deserve no excuses for what we're seeing. This is easily the worst defensive SLU team in my lifetime and I would be shocked if there were a worse defensive unit in SLU MBB history.

By the end of the game, the TV announcers were stunned by the futility of our defense.

Can you imagine being a mediocre at best mbb head coach your entire career. Get paid millions and millions of $$$ over 27 years. In 2024 be terrible at your job and the only way to get you to leave is pay you even more millions of $$$. You can’t make it up. None of it.

I've said this before and I may be 100% wrong, but I think AD May gave Ford the huge long-term contract not so much to prevent Ford from leaving, but to guarantee a big buyout payday to SLU when a P5 school came a-calling with unlimited resources.  Of course the strategy backfired badly.

Isabell was listening for about half of it.
Former staff member Michael Wilson listened for the last 3rd

Dalger showed up to listen with like 30 minutes left.

I didn't get to listen to the whole Spaces session, but one of the discussion points got me thinking:

Did AD May give CTF the huge contract,  thinking that a near-term P5 job for CTF was inevitable, and would result in a huge "buyout" payday for SLU?

Regardless of AD May's reasoning, it was an awful move.
