  1. It's nonsense to even think that could happen.
  2. There's a piano performance of the "Billiken Rag" on one of the ragtime sites - maybe we could have it played while they're doing the pregame visuals on the scoreboard before introducing the Bills - kind of like the Globetrotters used to play "Sweet Georgia Brown." The tune is pretty catchy, and simplistic - meaning it will stay in the memory after a few hearings...
  3. I really think we need to beat them the 3rd time in the CUSA tournament...
  4. I don't think so; he asked for the Billiken Rag music a few months ago after I tracked it down...thanks to an article written by a Bearcat prof. which was linked on this board.
  5. Is the "Billiken Rag" going to be in the repetoire this year? How about a peppy Greek tune for our Hellenic newcomer?
  6. To play devil's advocate - there has been some discussion on this board that we might be desperate (none of it initiated by me - I'm on record as saying that we will land on our feet and not to worry) because the CUSA is imploding and we don't see the Valley as a viable alternative. We're worried that the dominoes might fall in such a way that we would be left out of a desirable choice. You would have to agree that there have been several threads with that tone. Also, I think he used the term "gadfly" correctly - that is, on this board, we have been persistently critical of the Valley relative to our vision of ourselves as belonging to an upper crust of college hoops. He DID come on with a link and an interesting theory of its signifigance. Okay...so what. I thought the reaction was over the edge.
  7. Or you could thank the guy for a link to an interesting article and his interest. I'm amazed at the knee-jerk reaction to that post - it didn't contain any of the hostility that we sometimes see from others. It didn't merit any personal attacks. Peace.
  8. Some of our posters still think they're playing defensive back...I thought your post was interesting. Thanks for sharing it. If our team's basketball performance affected our intelligence, we'd all have dropped out during the Ekker years...
  9. All Jesuits (that I know) and all graduates of Jesuit institutions are well versed in the scatological vernacular. The attraction of 4 letter words is that they are easy to say, easy to spell, and everybody knows what you mean.:+
  10. If it's illegal, then it's further evidence of how ridiculous the NCAA can be.
  11. I didn't see the column - what publication, or web site?
  12. Unfortunately, I think Matt would beat out JJ even skipping his senior year in high school. JJ has a great upside, but I didn't see any of it in the most recent scrimmage I watched, which included Matt.
  13. O'Fallon, IL? My 1st cousin is Dorcas Cecil and her husband is Corky. Maybe you hobnob with them. Corky sometimes gets Bill Laurie's box for SLU games when he's out of town or not otherwise using it. I prefer my seats to the box, but they don't have the same amenities...
  14. Is is possible you wear too many hats? By being on this board, you might be considered a SLU booster. Could that limit you as to when, where, and how you talk to potential SLU recruits? Common sense would indicate that your profession exempts you, but to use common sense and the NCAA in the same sentence is maybe not so sensible...Glad to have you on the board with your insights, and not looking for trouble...
  15. I think Frericks is clearly the starter, but Bryce will get 10+ minutes per game. He has a nice body which will only get better with a weight program. He's a nice athlete. I can't predict how he will develop nor how hard he will work, but he's got NBA size and when I think of McIlvane, I have high hopes for Bryce. Possibly he'll lose minutes to Zorba when he's eligible, and maybe they'll redshirt him next year. But don't discount him yet.
  16. 57, SLUH, SEMO grad, accounting education from UMSL, CPA and financial planner, heavily involved in real estate, semi retired, still play noontime hoops 2-3 time per week at Brentwood Y, raised 3 daughters - 2 overachievers and one (for the moment) underachiever...she was the first Billiken ball girl and started when Grawer was there - I asked him if she could be and he stammered he didn't see why not, so she sat on the court every home game for 2-3 years...and freed up one of my seats for someone else. Season ticket holder going back to Kiel. Wife Donna got her MA at SLU, thus earning valuable points for my seat status. Now a retired teacher. Daughter Jessica finished a 4 year RN program at SLU - 1st in her class. Now has a CRNA degree from Webster. Oldest daughter Rebecca is an Olin Fellow at Wash U - working on a PHD. BA from Truman and MA from UMSL. Uncle Joe has been the official scorer at SLU games for the last 50+ years. Enuf!
  17. I'm not the kind of person who demeans with racial stereotypes. You have me confused with others. Secondly, if you haven't seen the movie, how can the nickname be demeaning for you? Thirdly, I didn't know that Greeks were a separate race, and to be identified as one would be demeaning. I believe we owe much of what is good about western civilization, and the ideas of our founding fathers to them. Lastly, what is wrong with nicknames? For example, clearly the concept of an H bomb, or any bomb, is disturbing to many. Yet H bomb was a term of endearment for H Waldman, and to drop bombs from 3 pt range is a kudo to a developed skill. Please take a deep breath and find another windmill other than me.
  18. What's wrong with dubbing a nickname on this site? As soon as you read "Zorba", you should know exactly who we're talking about - unless you've never heard of the movie "Zorba the Greek." I assume most on this board have. Likewise, to me, Ike is a natural moniker for Izik. Did they call H the H-bomb in Vegas? That probably originated here. In any event, no disrespect is intended with any nicknames I use with our program...
  19. You know, it seems to me Brad's getting the guys he wants to get. We are excited on this board. Zo didn't get the guys he wanted very often. So, in my book, Brad is a big success. Nobody is dissing his recruits. Yes, we still have to play the games, but in whatever way you can measure success for Brad so far, he has achieved it.
  20. From just the one pickup game I've seen with Bryce, he seems to already have a defensive presence. He deferred to others at the scoring end, but even Izik couldn't go right at him and score - Bryce would just swat it away...without fouling. I'm sure Frericks has the better all around game, and Zorba too, but Bryce might turn out to be the sleeper of this recruiting class. Time will tell.
