Looked the Cardinals are back home for the weekend , and the Battlehawks ( Ka Kaw)have a home game Saturday..In case they wanted to take the recruits .

I’d rather our staff take the time showing them around Pius Library and sitting in a few Philosophy classes. If these kids aren’t interested in joining the Micah program then they may as well sign with some godless school like Georgetown.

A very small group of decision making SLU boosters/donors and a small group of SLU Admin handled the new SLU head coach hiring process. That included an additional familiar to many SLU employee that hasn’t been publicly mentioned.

Now having a fun time picturing literally any of my former professors being included in this coaching search. Small group of powerful boosters… and a random Arts&Sciences prof there to ensure the coach’s philosophy aligns with Ignatian Pedagogy.

He was President during a difficult time a Black Swan event and changes in higher education before that happened.  Those things forced hard decisions.  SLU, as far as I know, isn't in crazy debt like other schools and for the most part survived at about the same level SLU entered the period. So he was a steady hand.

I would like a visionary with good organizational skills to bring some improvement.

Also wouldn't mind going back to a Jesuit.  But looking at the landscape, I'm not sure who's out there.  Creighton's SJ President is older than Pestello as are many others.  Plus SJ's take a vow of poverty probably saving SLU $900k/year.

Fairfield University has laymen President, Nemec who might be a visionary type.

I didn't agree with some of the COVID measures and really didn't like when they instituted mandatory random room/apartment inspections for all a few years ago.  But I recognize BS like that was happening all over so SLU wasn't an outlier.

I'm hopeful SLU makes the right choice and May is soon to follow.

Jesuits get paid— their salary just goes to the Jesuit community they live in. So the $900K salary a president earns is given to the Jesuits living on campus. Same as a professor making $75K. A bit of a robbing Peter to pay Paul situation, but the university and the Jesuit community are separate entities. And the individual Jesuit shares their salary with their brother priests and scholastics.

Bonnies take down the Chicago Harry Potter scarf wearers.  Juan Bid A-10 this year.

What was the final shot? Down 1 with 3.4 to play (after being up 15 at one point) NBA range 3… AIRBALL. Woof.

    A10 Basketball remains undefeated.

  5. Went to a Jesuit high school, didn't have the grades to get into UT. Knew that the Jesuit colleges all gave money to Jesuit high school kids; SLU was the best school I got into and they gave the most money, it had the best athletics program of the schools applied to (which isn't saying much, but the others were LMU and Spring Hill), wanted to try out what having four seasons a year is like, and I liked the color blue.

First game I went to as a freshman, got bused down to Scottrade to see Kevin Lisch almost single-handedly upset #10 ranked Xavier in the final minute. Didn't miss a home game the rest of my time at SLU besides my semester in Spain.

At the UH game this year, I was in line to get beer with another alum, wearing SLU gear, and some Cougar fans behind us kept chirping at us "to go back to St. Louis," and the confusion on their face as we explained that we were both from Texas and still live here really messed with their heads.

McCauley, Claggett, Jett, and the coach from Jacksonville who tried to come into the stands to fight 05 after a drunken game in ~2010

This is the reference I was not expecting to see but thoroughly enjoyed. Can you also get super specific with your Mount Rushmore and include the time Majerus stopped the game to grab the PA mic and yell at the student section for throwing stuff?

If this is personal, my Billiken Rushmore is: Lisch, Conklin, Jett, Majerus.

All time has to be: McCauley, Bonner, Hughes, Majerus.

Note the number 33 framed hoops jersey in the opening scene. Looks like it’s Willie Reed’s based on the font...

I noticed that too, but I think it might be because he is the 33rd president in school history? Could be wrong. Regardless, they had the jersey lying around so it was easy to frame...

Also, the potential names for the district are horrible. Why do we need to name this district? Seems superfluous.

  8. This is awesome! I'm in Houston and know about 20-30 other alums who live in town that would all be super pumped to go.

Hofenheinz Pavilion is a dumpster fire of an arena, which is why it is being remodeled this season and turned into the Fertitta Center in time for the 2018-2019 season. Maybe we will be the inaugural game in the fixed up place. UofH probably tried to get an old SWC rival to usher it in, but got the shaft from them so they had to settle for an old Conference USA rival.

  9. Agree...we needed a capable replacement for Coach Majerus at the time he became ill. Crews wasn't capable of adding to what had already been built. Next HC has to hit the ground running and it won't be done overnight.

I agree. And hindsight helps here. What THAT team needed under those circumstances was stability, which JC provided that season. (Disappointing blow out to the under-seeded Oregon team aside) That team performed so well in the face of all the adversity, became a lovable, national headline, and then the AD and administration were handcuffed-- How can you fire/not hire full time the national coach of the year?!? It would have been awful publicity.

Good point. It will take time for any coach. I think we aren't too far away from respectability (top 150 - not a 'bad loss'), but this team won't be dancing in 1-2 years. Even 3 would be overachieving.

You're incredibly right... unless Jolly puts in a monster Conklin Summer, puts the team on his back, and rolls the Bills all the way to the 'Ship, amiright?!?! #OneShiningMoment

  10. If Ford is the man, so be it. Even if he was 'Plan B,' he can't do much worse than the past two years.

There isn't a single coach out there, living or deceased, who could transform our program instantly (or ever) into the great powerhouse many on this board irrationally want/believe us to be.

I think this is off base. I don't think anyone on here truly believes we are going to instantly be NCAA Tourney-worthy from Day 1 under a new coach. This is a rebuilding process. Everyone is aware of that reality. It still doesn't detract from the fact that this is a crucial hire.

I agree it's a crucial hire, and my comment in bold is slightly tongue in cheek, but I will say after reading this board just about every day for the past 9-10 years, there seem to be some posters on this board who seem to have an inflated sense of grandeur for this program, and recently it seems that there is this groundswell of sentiment that if we do not hire Drew, then our program will instantly tank closer to Mercer, IPFW, or Chicago State. I think a coach Ford, or Rice, or the ND assistant, are all equally as likely to help rebuild the program in a gradual process. There is no quick fix here.

  11. I don't like how high you're getting my hopes. I'm resigned that Ford is the man.

If Ford is the man, so be it. Even if he was 'Plan B,' he can't do much worse than the past two years.

There isn't a single coach out there, living or deceased, who could transform our program instantly (or ever) into the great powerhouse many on this board irrationally want/believe us to be.

  12. Hi Wiz... Haven't posted on here in years, but I had a thought. Is it possible the "Ford Announcement" was a way for the AD to figure out who has been leaking information to the press?

I've been thinking along these lines as well. Maybe we've been watching too much House of Cards lately, but another conspiracy theory I've been thinking goes along these lines as well. What IF:

Drew is our main target, and in principle our people and his people have agreed to a deal for after the season, BUT the AD hadn't heard from Drew lately, so they, like us, get antsy. Then, Drew/Valpo win, extending our misery two more days. Uh-oh, Panic. So, the search firm immediately leaks to Stu the Ford hire, in order to get Drew's camp to freak out and contact our AD, thus proving how interested they are.

Search firm leaked to/took advantage of Stu, thus preventing the AD from having to look bad and taking the fall. P-D comes across as the bad guy. Now, Drew's camp fully tips their hand at how interested they are/recommits to coming to SLU once Valpo's season ends. Ford probably has no idea any of this happened.

Also, Oswald acted alone, Elvis is still alive, and this is all for naught because we should hire Leon Rice over either these guys.

  13. I always thought campus needed a freshman dorm on the east side of Grand, in that Tegler field area, but that they couldn't build there because of the Civil War/Camp Jackson Affair skirmish? Regardless, I think a freshman dorm on the east side of Grand would really connect the campus better and bring more life to the businesses on that side plus bring in more student spectators for athletic events.

The spot across from Humps would be pretty rad also. Having lived in the Lofts right above Humps my senior year, I am an authority on knowing how great that location can be. Taking a page from my financial accument, future students living directly across from Humps should just learn to budget roughly 50% of their income to Humps bar tabs and they'll have a great senior year.

  14. I'm thinking the one in the middle is just about nine centimeters. Think of it as the anti-pitocin.

Like several of the other recent grad posters, I was also going to wax poetic about how Majerus was hired when I was making my college decision senior year of HS. And how his hire (and SLU's financial aid department) tipped my hand into going to Saint Louis as opposed to some other fairly decent schools because I thought I'd have the best chance of seeing an NCAA tournament game during my undergrad years...but then bonwich made the cork joke and there are just some things you can't unsee.
