I did attend the news conference and overall I thought it was well done.  I could be wrong but when I attended the Ford news conference, I don't remember May talking that much about the donors.  Today he mentioned several donors by name and more than once.  Just my opinion but that was a signal that they took a much more active role in this decision then before.  Schertz mentioned that his one son is transferring to SLU and that his other son is moving here - does anyone know what that son does?  I didn't see Tillet but like some said depending where you were sitting it was hard to see everyone.

That and when you lose a bunch of rich people 8 figures in cash and they don't make you disappear, you gotta stay on your knees for awhile.

The fact Tate is still on campus leads me to think he's going to be retained. Even if it's a Thorpe situation and it's only a year, I think it's good for transition purposes. I still think he adds value to the region especially with the to be senior class in STL.

    Debriefing meetings as well

Thanks 05, brought back a lot of memories.

I even make a cameo in there.

Also anyone know whatever happened to the kinda dorky South Florida fan that used to go to all the games? He was a huge USF fan and would wear suspenders and a like a carnival barker hat with bull horns? Ended up kind of just becoming a SLU WBB fan.  @Pistol you remember this guy right?

I eat rice for dinner every night, if anyone cares, so I too like rice.

Long grain rice, instant pot 1/1 water ratio, hit it with some kosher salt, pressure cook, 4 minutes, decompress for 20.

We know Calipari can recruit. The problem was college basketball changed and teams got older with the portal so winning with a bunch of one and dones was harder.

I think he realizes that now, 2 years too late.  He told UK fans basically "I have a plan".  They didn't have the will to pay $33mil buyout but it was so toxic.  He needed to jump.

If he recruits transfers at the same high level he got HS kids he can win. Arkansas will pay NIL. If he changes he can win again.

This is Calipari and Kentucky learning from the greatest point guard to ever play the game of basketball: Travis Ford.

We already reviewed the Ford hired thread. There was definitely a decent amount of negativity and mainly skepticism but people happy for a fresh start with a guy who can actually recruit

Correct. I think the fan sentiment around Ford was really warped by the last two years under Crews. The talent level dipped so sharply that we were all begging for recruiting instead of looking at the big picture. I haven’t gone back and looked but I’m probably one of those willing to or wrongly look past the red flags for a guy who had charisma and could bring in recruits.

Thank God the portal was not in existence during the Shimmy years. The roster would have probably had a 100% turnover every year.

Shimmy did know how to PR herself. Loved her blog. Also, didn't they make a documentary movie about the team during her tenure?

Yes. It’s on Vimeo. I can’t get a link right now.

    it’s called the Gray Seasons

it's barely April, boy the impatience with this thread on this board!

See the thing about that is…the criticism of May has nothing to do with on field winning or losing. Rather the dysfunctional culture under his leadership.

Played against Shimmy in a Students vs Faculty charity game, and she was… not nice.

Bizarrely chewed out a men’s player (Dwayne Evans, I think) while he was reffing. And was trying to talk trash all game, it was really weird.

I’ve seen the really sweet side of Shimmy, but she enters another reality when basketball is involved.

Exactly.  I don't like the overly smarmy May but I think May is here to stay so long as the old boy network is happy and the budget isn't fuoked.  This is probably too simplistic but I am looking at this from a dollars and cents point of view.  We know there are a number of big $$ people behind basketball and soccer and those sports are 1 and 2 in revenue generation for the dept. so, on some level, it makes sense that May caters to those 3 programs and those teams get run of the facilities (maybe it is not "fair" but when does that matter in real life).  It would also then make sense that May would run the rest of the sports programs on a shoestring to make the money work.  Now if baseball or track began to generate real revenue or donors, then I am sure May would build a stadium or give them a free breakfast but until then he will let them eat cake like the rest of the "peasant" sports.

Stadium aside (which we really are just asking for stadium seats and a press box in the same setup as now), these non-revs are lacking the absolute bare minimum to match Big East programs. SLU baseball received a donation of brand new led lights from an alumni. It didn’t come with money to install it. May declined to budget the installation or allow crowd funding even though the field didn’t have lights in proper working order. They have to play all day games. The new turf wasn’t even installed til February and there was doubt they’d be able to play home games on campus. They had to bus to the grizzlies field for practice. A donation was on the table to renovate the Softball playing surface but  was apparently rejected by May because he wanted all donations to go to the OCC. He’s consistently taking credit for these programs success while just inexplicably letting them play in sub par conditions. The OCC also does not support all SAs. For instance you have to shower before using the ice bath, but baseball for instance don’t have showers in there

I really don't care about May either way, but if he was good enough for Majerus, and he's good enough for Doc Chaifetz and good enough for Schertz to come here - I'm gonna say he's good enough for me. I think many overestimate his importance in the grand scheme.

I've been saying that for years.  We've got about 30 years of evidence that demonstrates the old boy network runs the show regardless of who the AD is.

My issue with May and everyone else's should go way deeper than a Men's Basketball hire. The arrogance with which he runs the department has created a culture of warped "gratitude" where the student athletes and rank and file employees should be grateful for anything they get. Darin Hendrickson just won his 500th game at SLU and has to fight tooth and nail to get any upgrades to his facility just to bring it on par with the Big East. The Champions Center was built with the promise that all SLU athletes would be able to access free breakfast, that was not true yet is still shown on his SLU profile. Track and Field has a home meet meal for the team in the OCC and athletes had to pay for it. The department is under staffed and overworked and May hides from any confrontation or negativity. I said that my issues go deeper than a men's basketball hire, but that hire put SLU athletics in a major financial bind without an NCAA Tournament apppearance.

I was told 2 months ago that they were comfortable with their NIL for next year.

Things have changed quite a bit. I don't think they understood 2 months ago what they truly needed to be comfortable. Matthew Jakobsze has brought reality to the department on what it takes in NIL.
