I think that’s a fair comment. I also don’t think SLU has ever done a good enough job connecting as the city’s team. Sure we do cheesy tag lines and talk about being as much, but since Spoon we just haven’t accomplished that. I realize one can make a strong argument that winning would solve that, but just a general failure in my opinion. I also thought we failed in marketing Avila, but I suppose we have another season to do better there. Winning tends to cure all which sadly seems to be the plan of our athletic department.

I agree with the overall tone of your comment. Where I sort  disagree is the marketing of Avila. I thought they tried. Was it successful? No but not for lack of effort. I think we could do more community service projects. Maybe with Schertz being here for a year he might have a better feel on what we could do. Yes winning would help.

I said the portal is a two way street.  Strong performers from our conference move up and weak performers from the P5 move down.  We don't seem to acknowledge that some of the players moving down become all-conference performers in the A10.  Some of the players moving up won't do much at their new home.

I agree that programs who don't have a certain amount of money are screwed under this system.  They don't have the resources to retain good players or to attract talented players who didn't pan out at the P5 level.

Agree it is a 2 way street. But at least this year in the A-10 the street is moving uphill.

Here is a list of the Top 100 ranked transfers from this season: https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/college-basketball-transfer-rankings-2025-heated-debate-at-no-1-headlines-updated-top-100-and-1-free-agents/

    - There are 5 former A-10 players on the top 100 list and they have all moved on to P6 programs. On the flip side, there is not one Top 100 transfer moving from P6 into the A10.

    - There are a number of P6 to other P6 school transfers on this list and of course quite a few non P6 players transferring up to P6 schools, but there is not one example of a top 100 transfer going from a P6 school to a non-P6 school.

Bottom line, there is no way the talent coming from P6 schools down to the mid majors is as good as the talent leaving non-P6 schools and moving up.

Not trying to pick a fight but 3 star has been saying that the mid majors would benefit. We seem to be the only A-10 team getting players from the majors.

i think this is a good point.   i am doubting Schertz's walk on plan.   seems like a loophole that programs could take advantage of to hide players. and still stay under the limit and still have a number of walkons.

Who is to say they will stick around though? It's nice to think about, but there's no way to know if any of these guys will be here next year. I am of the opinion that we'll see less turnover, especially if this year goes well. If this year goes poorly, well all bets are off.

I would assume that if the year goes well we would have more money to pay.

Clayton had a marvelous game.   Both teams were incredibly physical.   I hate to see if that kind of "defense".

First complete game I watched in the tournament.  I'm reminded by the type of defense, why I am losing interest in basketball.

I am sort of with you on the physical defense but if they weren’t physical scores would all be in the 100’s. Players are that good at scoring. The plays I can’t stand is how they let bigs back down players in the paint. Why those bumps aren’t charges is beyond me ,but that’s how it’s called.

Schools have and many, also, have endowments where you specify your endowment gift to be restricted to use for athletics.

You are not talking about a schools general endowment fund. One could endow a specific scholarship thru an athletic department for a special purpose. The great T Bone Pickens set up a special athletic fund at Oklahoma State but that was not part of the schools general endowment. That fund which used some creative funding ended up collapsing.

i seriously doubt the university bucked up a cent.   what money we paid out last year was whatever our whales ponied up which obviously wasnt enough.  i would bet the university will continue to cry "we are in debt" while they have their multi billion dollar endowment that "cant be touched".   (which is b.s.  they can always cash investments in they will just have to pay penalties or substitute alternate collateral)  when you are talking billions.   a penalty will be paltry compared to the balance.  remember, a billion is 1,000 million.   keep it in perspective.   the time is now.  we either go big or we are doomed to mid level in the conference which will never get us a D1 invite when the inevitable split comes.

Filling the team with a couple of players who will never see the floor makes no sense to me unless Schertz goes May and says these players can help. What happens to the walk-on's ? Are they out of a job? Give it up on the Endowment Fund. I guarantee you no university is using general Endowment money to support athletics.
