LHJ, shot 35% from 3, which is very average for a D1 combo guard. He was also a starter on one of the worst defensive teams in the country. I don't recall him shutting down anyone, and he didn't light up the steal stats, so I am not sold on the good defender narrative.

We all think Gibson is a great shooter. What was his percentage. Not much better than Hughes. Our lack of an inside game limited open 3’s. Larry was usually given the top defensive assignment. Yes I know this was by default. We were a terrible defensive team because we couldn’t protect the rim. Too much help vs guarding the line . This is my biggest Ford defensive criticism. I am not trying to make him sound like an All American but I think he would be a strong rotation player.

If coach wants to keep LHJ for reasons beyond just basketball talent, I understand, but Thames has an entirely different level of athleticism.

I don’t get the narrative that Hughes wouldn’t fit in Schertz’s system. Good 3 point shooter, good defender. Won’t have to handle the ball as much. Not a knock on Thames but I see him as a better fit. I know Thames had better 3 point numbers but it was a small sample on mostly open shots.

    Question.

When we hired Ford, where was he on our list for the job?  Presumably not 1st, probably not 2nd/3rd?

I think this is revisionist history. I believe most of us were pretty excited by the hire.

We the fans said we wouldn't buy tickets to this garbage.

May fires the coach because fear of revenue loss.

It had nothing to do with the fans though.

    Make it make sense please?

That’s what I said . He knew ticket sales and donations was going to be a problem not because 12 people on the Billiken board said they wanted him fired. He has said he doesn’t read this board and I believe him.

I hope Rebecca stays.  She’s gonna get offers now.  What a game from courtside.  I talked to her after the game and told her that she did an amazing coaching job these past two postseasons.    We should’ve just given her the men’s job.  Made some history.

I think you are overestimating her market value. I am excited by her potential but her overall record doesn’t demand recruitment by a higher level.

The online campaign to dump Ford and hire Schertz/not hire Ahearn had a definite effect on the decisions made in the last few weeks.

How can you not see this?

Burnergate doesn't happen without the online pressure.  That embarrassment was the tipping point in Ford's tenure.  There was no coming back after that.

The AD's office is still talking about the box of clown noses.  It was a big black eye for them.  May might still have them, he did for several weeks after.

The silly multi year flirtation with Blake Ahearn was put down completely by online pressure.

Schertz as a a candidate was enhanced exponentially by the support of him online.

But yeah the grassroots thing was stupid.

The AD, Board of Trustees, and big boosters all read this board and Billikens Twitter.  What we say does influence and shape their decisions.

I buy some of this but certainly not all. Whether you like him or not May is not a fool. He knew selling tickets and getting donations was going to be a problem. He weighed buyouts vs ticket revenue and made the obvious decision. Did the board help show the overall sentiment. Sure. But don’t think for a minute that if big and middle level donors weren’t ready for a change it wouldn’t happen. I don’t believe the Ahearn stuff was ever a possibility. It was created by comments from Grawer and Holly and was nothing more. Schertz was the obvious candidate from day one. Besides Conrad I doubt anyone else on the Board of Trustees reads this board and he reads it because he is a huge basketball fan. I know you took issue with Courtsides timeline but I think it was pretty accurate. Ps. 90% of the BOT don’t know we have a basketball team. The group of Fred May Bob O Conrad and Doc made this decision and don’t underestimate May.

It's what happens when you have confidence in the coach.

I was told 2 months ago that they were comfortable with their NIL for next year.

That is correct, but every injury is unique in its own way, the way the injured person uses his/her body is also unique, and the way they recover is also not the same. Another factor that is involved is the psych factor. When you recover from a bad injury it stays in your mind and you become cautious about doing things that might re injure your body in a similar way. Never believe when you read that someone is fully recovered and think they are back to the way they were before. Medically speaking "fully recovered" after something like a hip replacement does not mean you can do yoga, or climb mountains, of play championship basketball. It means you can walk, drive a car, and climb stairs (not fast or multiple floors at a time).

I knew a woman that did yoga who had a hip replacement (the whole show with the steel acetabulum socket liner). On being discharged she asked the Dr. what she could do. The orthopod said you can do what you do normally. She did yoga and popped the steel hip out of the steel socket. They put her together again but that hip was never fully right afterwards.

If you ever go through a hip or knee replacement and want to know what you can do, be specific when you ask. Mention yoga or basketball by name and go into details if the Dr asks.

I appreciate all of this but as I said it just depends.

And against Rockhurst in an exhibition game. Like Kobe going out against the Washington Generals or Athletes in Action. Completely unnecessary. I don’t know why Ford wasn’t nailed to a tree by this board when that happened.

BS. He could have been hurt at any time. People can get hurt at practice

Unfortunately for him, this is the kind of injury that heals and allows normal movement after recovery. However, star basketball players require lots more than ordinary mobility of their joints, and recovery to "normal" may or may not allow him to play as he used to before the injury. Remember Perkins when he came back to play after his surgical repair and recovery? He did play but not like before the injury.

But I am reading that Paige Bueckers sp is back to where she was. I think it just depends.

    Coaching Carousel SLU edition:

Chris Mack was contacted by SLU for the 2nd straight year to gauge his interest. Nothing more than that transpired with him. He wasn’t SLU’s first or top choice. He was one of many in a list. And since his interest wasn’t strong, SLU moved on to the next candidate. Mack was more of a thing last year.

Mack overestimated his demand this cycle. He was somewhat selective, only seeking P4 opportunities. But he was not a serious candidate at any of the P4 openings. He was nowhere near the top 3 at Vandy, which was in order, May, Sprinkle, Byington. But he was on a secondary list with several others.

Mack was also hoping that FSU or UCF (again, P4 situations) would open so he could enter the mix there. They didn’t. He ended up at College of Charleston to get back into the mix after sitting out. It was now or never. He was not College of Charleston’s first choice. And they were not his first choice. It’s a good mid major job, which is where he needed to go to build himself up back into the mix. It took an old connection tor him to land there. Both Mack and Kelsey were assistants for Skip Prosser. And, Kelsey was an assistant for Mack.

It’s been 5 years since Mack coached in the NCAA Tourney. He’s long had an aloof, loner, personality with his peers. He panic fired his staff at UL and he secretly recorded an assistant that tried to extort him. Those are all red flags for P4 programs with many other available canidates.

Darian DeVries was a candidate at Michigan. And, he was ultimately hired at West Virginia. May was their first choice but DeVries was high on their list. DeVries was on SLU’s list and he had some level of interest in SLU as a fall back choice.

Mark Byington was a candidate at West Virginia. He was hired by Vandy as their 3rd choice behind May and Sprinkle. SLU would have had a chance with Byington if he was pursued early as a top choice like Schertz before other opportunities opened for him. But not beyond that.

Many schools are (obviously) avoiding Will Wade because of his show cause and because of his reputation. SLU of course is included in that group and SLU had no interest, not that Wade would have had any interest in SLU either.

Pat Kelsey hadn’t previously been scooped up long ago because of concerns about his personality. (same reason different personality than Mack) SLU of course is included in that. His name gets mentioned often but most schools have looked for a reason to hire someone else. He ended up as a fall back choice for UL.

Bryce Drew never moved up or down out of middle of the pack level at SLU or at other places. He as perceived as an elite recruiter, that has struggled with player development, x’s and o’s, in game adjustments. His PR campaign to trash his previous employer through some basketball media, hasn’t helped his candidacy elsewhere.

You can’t play a what if game when you land your first choice. But up next after that for SLU were Spradlin, Henderson, McCollum, Kerns, Morrell, McMillan. Spradlin was positioned as next up, as he impressed multiple places because he interviewed well. And he landed the James Madison position.

McMillan, signed a raise and extension at Samford. (He’s been a secondary candidate at a few places.), McCollum, who was middle of the pack on SLU’s list, accepted the position at Drake.
    ……………

    Thank you for the info.

Ezewiro, a guy who couldn't get off the bench for a bad P6 team, averaged 12 and 6 for an equally bad Billikens team.  This isn't a sexy example, but it's fairly typical.

The co-player of the year in the A10 is Richmond's Jordan King, an all-conference player who transferred from another mid-major.  Same with second-teamer Keyshawn Hall from George Mason. That's also fairly typical.

Matt Cross was a role player at his previous P6 stops.  He was a first-teamer at UMass.  Nate Santos couldn't get off the bench at Pitt.  He was a second-teamer at Dayton.  And so on.

While you gave me a couple of names it’s still a fairly small sample. Seems like more lateral transfers

The first players to enter the portal are usually the ones who are transferring up.  That only makes sense.  They want the bidding war to start as soon as possible.  Some guys who are getting booted to make room for the new guys haven't been booted yet.

And some of those unwanted players will go on to be starters or even all-conference players at their new destination.  Happens in the A-10 every year.

Once the high majors decided to drop good mid-majors from their non-conference schedules, they effectively locked mid-majors out of the at-large discussion.

Star you made the transfer down argument last year and I don’t think it was true. If you give me examples I will stand corrected.

That's a good point that I hadn't really considered based on the fact that he's still actively coaching this season.

I just found out who Slaten was for the first time 2 weeks ago, and im glad I went as long as I did.

If you think he is bad now you should have heard him 20 years ago.

Great point. I live in Cincinnati and the internet doesn't exist.

Frank and Slaten are different people with different shows pushing for the same bad ideas for SLU.

So you watch the channel 5 news every night?

Frank and Slaten both slobbered over Ahearn. They are comparable.

They are not comparable. You pick one item on the hundreds of subjects he may cover in a week. And I for one don't think they Ahearn idea is as stupit as you do. No I would not do it and glad they didn't but don't think it was completely crazy. You hate May so should we view everything you write with that in mind?
