Planning on making the trip to St. Louis for the Xavier

xfactor9600, we're glad to be in the A-10 and very happy to have Xavier on our schedule again. We have a long history together, unfortunately, the history favors the XMen. The Bills play this year at what was formerly known as the Savvis Center, a pro-style arena that seats over 20,000 which is downtown. Thus, if you have 8,000 fans in a 22,000 seat arena, the atmosphere can get antiseptic at times. Back in the year of Larry Hughes, SLU was in the top 5 in the nation in attendance (not so now). If the Bills show themselves to be a competitive team this season, I'd expect around 10k for the Xavier game.

Where to stay. Dependends on the coin you have to spend. If your wallet is fat, you might want to stay at the new Westin (close to Savvis and probably the nicest downtown)--

The only deal with the Westin is that construction on the new baseball stadium is going on right across the street. It'll be sweet when that's all done. BTW, there is a metro stop right at this hotel if you are coming in by plane.

Here is a list of downtown hotels:

I've always found good deals on Hotels.com so I check there too.

i was thinking walking distance to avoid getting the car out of the garage and then finding parking in a foreign city. i know when i go oot, i typically try to plan on staying somewhere where i dont have to drive as much as possible.

Casino Queen isn't a bad place to stay if you like to gamble. Metro-link will get you to and from the game.

Or, what I usually do is go to priceline and bid $50 for a five-star hotel in the downtown area. It always works out great.

Sheraton, Westin, Renaissance, Hyatt are four good ones. Downtown St. Louis is not that big...Hyatt and Sheraton are next door to the arena, Westin is next to Busch Stadium a further walk, and the Renaissance is next to the dome where the Rams play, but on a long block of restaurants, clubs, bars. A couple of dollar 2 minute cab ride tops. You wouldn't need or want to drive to game.

Any of these are very nice places to stay, and deals are much better than in bigger cities for the same types of places.

I always recommend McGurk's and the Soulard to out of towners, for suds, also Washington Ave downtown.

Try to book the Sheraton City Center.

It is directly across the street from the Savvis Center and on the same block as the metro link (the light rail/subway system). For about $1.50, you can take a less than five minute ride on the metrolink to:

The Landing (http://www.lacledeslanding.org/),

The Delmar Loop (http://www.ucityloop.com/),

The Central West End (http://www.thecwe.com/), and

Union Station (http://www.stlouisunionstation.com/main.html).

You can also get really good deals in downtown St. Louis through priceline.com My brother has gotten very nice hotel rooms downtown for about $50.
