OkieBilliken Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 The ladies need to win tonight and then win a damn title tomorrow! I saw a bit of the VCU mens match across from SLU this morning. They look really, really good and are going to be very tough to beat. Quote

Pistol Posted June 20, 2024 Posted June 20, 2024 SLU Tennis Head Coach Justin Stuckey is leaving for Drake. Quote
Pistol Posted June 20, 2024 Posted June 20, 2024 "We are thrilled to welcome Justin to Drake," Hardin said. "His experience as a program-building head coach at four schools will be a tremendous asset to our tennis program. At Saint Louis, Justin has led both the men's and women's programs to new heights despite not having indoor nor outdoor courts on campus. I look forward to seeing what Justin is able to do as head coach of one program with the tremendous tennis facilities and community support we enjoy at Drake." Stuckey has amassed a career record of 424-244 with 10 conference championships and teams that ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation while coaching at different levels. He comes to Drake after five seasons as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Saint Louis University. Stuckey led the Billiken men and women to unprecedented results including simultaneous Atlantic 10 Conference tournament semifinal runs and coached six All-Atlantic 10 players including the 2023 A-10 Women's Player of the Year. Most recently, Stuckey guided the SLU men's team to its first-ever regional ranking at No. 7 and first-ever national tournament berth in the NIT Championship presented by UTR Sports. He also led the Billiken women to a school record for consecutive wins in a single season. Stuckey proved himself as a program builder at Saint Louis, elevating both teams throughout his tenure. Prior to his arrival at SLU, the Billiken men were the No. 10 seed in the A-10 Tournament and, largely due to Stuckey's guidance, earned the fourth seed last year and matched the best ranking in program history with the third seed in the 2023 A-10 Tournament. Stuckey holds the top mark in both men's and women's record books with a .641 winning percentage in both divisions. He became the first SLU men's tennis coach to lead the program with a career winning record since 1981 and led the Billikens to 30 combined victories over the past two seasons, the most in consecutive campaigns in 44 years. Losing succesful coaches to Missouri Valley schools is a terrible thing. But they probably have on-campus courts....If there is a tennis portal, I dont want to even look at it.... Pistol 1 Quote

But they probably have on-campus courts....If there is a tennis portal, I dont want to even look at it.... You would be correct. From the Drake website: Roger Knapp Tennis Center The Roger Knapp Tennis Center, completed in Oct. of 1992, features six indoor and six outdoor tennis courts. Athletic team lockers, meeting rooms and tennis coaches offices are located here as well. Drake has hosted the Missouri Valley Conference Championships as well as the Summit League Championships, NCAA Regionals and Rolex Tournament. Already one of the finest on-campus indoor tennis facilities in the Midwest, the Roger Knapp Tennis Center added another amenity to its arsenal with the June 2012 completion of a resurfacing project for its six indoor and six outdoor courts. The indoor courts maintained the same surface coating but afford players a little more spring in their games during competition. A 100 percent acrylic finish, with a brand new color scheme, one comparable to that found at the Australian Open (dark blue on light blue), highlights the courts. The surface is similar to that used at both the U.S. Open and Australian Open and is a medium-fast surface. The new indoor surface boasts improved grip and playability as well as compliments the lighting of the facility. Come cheer on the men's and women's tennis teams at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center! Pistol Posted June 20, 2024 Posted June 20, 2024 Drake has a tennis center with 6 indoor and 6 outdoor courts. Stuckey is a really good coach. We talked about him on the podcast a few months ago. I noticed how well both teams were performing and did some digging on his background. He's mostly coached in lower divisions but everywhere he goes, he elevates the program, and pretty dramatically in some cases. At Wittenberg, the women went from 3 wins to 15 in one year. At MacPherson, the women went 20-0 over two seasons. Both the men and women were top 5 teams by the time he left William Woods. At SLU, each team's win total has gone up almost every year he's been in charge. It's pretty remarkable what a consistent program builder he is, and he hasn't done it anywhere with high-level resources. This is a nice hire by Drake. Quote

It's going to be really difficult to get Tennis back on campus. I think I've posted this before but even if there is enough room behind the the softball field, you're going to have to battle the University for that space. The med campus would be the most likely option for a facility. SIUE's facility would be a good blueprint. Courts, a couple small bleachers and a small shed/clubhouse My totally weird outside the box idea that I haven't done any spacing calculations or checked on NCAA regulations on is for 4-5(depending on fit) SportCourt tennis courts that can be laid over Chaifetz Arena and Pavilions. I've wondered how much space is opened up when every collapsible sections is pushed back. My dumber idea is to throw courts up on top of Olive Compton. Quote

Speyburn Posted June 20, 2024 Posted June 20, 2024 A few years ago, there was a tennis event held inside Chafietz that had McEnroe, Courier and I believe Roddick playing. Before they played each other, fans had the opportunity to be on the court and practice with them. Quote

shempie Posted June 21, 2024 Posted June 21, 2024 At one point preliminary plans existed to build a 6 court indoor facility near the medical school campus. The AD continues to look for a lead gift to build it. The school has built and torn down 2 outdoor facilities, the original just east of Grand and south of Lindell and the second where Chaifetz sits now. Quote

Lord Elrond Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 New Billiken head coach for both men and women. SLU announcement, definitely a local guy. ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University Director of Athletics Chris May has announced the hiring of James Tobin as head coach of the Billikens' men's and women's tennis teams. "We are excited to welcome James Tobin to lead our men's and women's tennis programs," May said. "With his background in collegiate tennis coupled with strong connections within the tennis community, I am confident the Billikens will be in a position to succeed. We look forward to having a great season and continuing the momentum our teams have gained in recent years." From 2019 to 2022, Tobin served as an assistant men's and women's coach at Lindenwood University. He also has coaching experience in St. Louis as the lead professional and program developer for Nike tennis camps, as a private coach at Dwight Davis Tennis Center, and as the lead professional with the City of St. Louis tennis program. Tobin also spent time as the lead professional at Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club in his native Australia. Tobin played three seasons at Missouri Baptist University, where he helped the Spartans win their first conference title and qualify for their first NAIA national tournament appearance. He was a two-time second-team All-Conference selection and a two-year team captain. Tobin holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Missouri Baptist and an MBA from Lindenwood. "I would like to send a special thank-you to the athletics department at Saint Louis University for trusting me with this role," Tobin said. "I am looking forward to the challenge ahead, and I hope to help our student-athletes maximize their SLU experience every day." Quote
OkieBilliken Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Not checking but I’m 100% sure Lindenwood has better tennis facilities than us. Mo Bpt probably as well. Good luck coach! Hope you win huge and then move on to a school where you get good support. Quote
