willie
I grew up in Louisville Kentucky and nothing is bigger in the state of Kentucky than UK basketball. The Louisville Courier Journal and all local TV stations lead with UofL basketball and football. Even in some of the down Crum years they were always the lead story. When they play each other the Louisville perspective is the one played first.
MUFAN2000
I think that may be an exception to the norm.
willie
If it is the exception, and I don"t necessarily buy that, its the way it should be. The name on the paper is the St. Louis Post. The name on the the school is St Louis. We are the city's only division one program. Enough said.

billiken_roy
on past reputation only is oklahoma superior to dayton. these days it appears oklahoma is struggling to be an also ran and wont even see the nit. dayton meanwhile is headed to the ncaa and a probable nice seed. sorry, you are wrong on that one. billiken_roy
you arent taking any logic courses at ole mizzou are you?
MUFAN2000
Howabout SLU vs. Indiana in rpi? Remember that prediction?
MUFAN2000
This is really a dumb argument. What does it matter where SLU comes on the news? My argument is that Mizzou has been traditionally a better basketball program, and as such, it's the top story.
MUFAN2000
What's wrong with the logic that the selectors will look at a road win over a team ranked 13th as being a "quality win?"
billiken_roy
first off, remember rankings mean nothing to the committee. they go by rpi. i dont think ou's rpi was anywhere near the false rating the polls were giving them. second, the view of whether it was a good or bad win will be viewed with hindsight in march. they wont care that the polls had falsely overated the sooners 3 months before. now if the reason ou was falling on their faces was that a key player or two all at once were out or a coach gets sick (pitino) they have said they would consider that, but ou is not going to be any more positive for the tigers than what butler is for us. both programs probably assumed those would be key games, now they both look like dog games. willie
So were only suppose to cover the better program? Since Kansas is a better program then yours they should be the lead story in KC papers? This is St. Louis not Columbia. Our name is on the door.
billiken_roy
no i dont know what you are talking about.
billiken_roy
texas tech showed last night they are pretty close to the best team in the big 12. that wasnt a very good analogy.
cheeseman
Willie thank you for your example about U of L and KY. In Boston it is BC well before UMASS. In Chicago you see DePaul written about first then IL. Memphis it is the Tigers before Vols. Milwaukee it is MU before WI. I think I can stop now. MUFAN2000
I disagree with you. If it was a computer picking the teams, yes they would go solely by rpi and sos. It's people picking the teams though, and if you don't think teams get bonus credit for past years, then you're (to quote a favorite quote of the billikens.com board) "naive." billiken_roy
mizzou will finish 4th in the big 12? this i gotta see.
MUFAN2000
Do you want me to go back and find it? I believe it was you who said "SLU will be better than indiana by the time the season's over with. Mark it down." You said this when I was saying possible reasons for MU to not play SLU.
billiken_roy
you are naive if you believe the selection committee chairman will sit with ole fudge packer on selection sunday and defend missouri getting in the tourney with their one quality win being a win vs 8th place big 12 old has been oklahoma. if missouri gets in, they are going to have to beat kansas, texas, texas tech, ok state etc. not a bottom 6 team that was overanked due to past history. now if ou turns it around and finishes in the top 4, that is different. but that doesnt look like it is going to happen. they are tanking it worse than the tigers. MUFAN2000
Can't wait till it happens, what'll you say then roy? "maybe mckinney and grimes will decide to transfer to slu..."
MUFAN2000
Would you like me to comment on wins like that before they happen? right now oklahoma is a quality win that we have.
MUFAN2000
Kansas IS the top story in KC papers.
billiken_roy
oh i still believe that. i think they are better than indiana right now. who would start for the billikens from indiana? is bracey wright better than bryant? no. are either leach or sean kline better than frericks? no. is aj moye better than chris sloan? no. is is strickland or perry better than josh fisher? no. indiana wouldnt finish in the top 8 of conference usa this year.
MUFAN2000
They're 30 spots ahead of you in rpi right now, and they haven't played the big boys of their conference yet. They didn't play 4 teams as bad as you have.
billiken_roy
well dont bet the farm on a wins vs indiana, iowa or oklahoma getting you in the tourney this year. they are not quality wins.
MUFAN2000
I'm not. But the season is long, and anything can happen. What will you say if we pile up wins vs. kansas and texas tech?
