  1. Hope Mr. Shaw has a fine career at SIU except when he plays the Bills. I don't think UB is real upset over this. He's got a season to see how guys like JJ, IO, Ian aka Zorba work out at the PF position. And also hopefully to find a late blooming PF in the JUCO, Transfer, or HS ranks. I still long to see some guy who is 6'8", quick as a cat, and leaps tall buildings in Billiken Blue.
  2. a non event? Has anyone received official word on his signing with the Salukis? Or is still just conjecture on the part of the recruiting gurus. By the way, Q made some tinny sounding statements in the PD on 10/07 about his program and how much he cares about the academics of his team...puhleeze!
  3. Big East reps must have been impressed by the soccer field when they did their inspection of Rue Paul. Can't wait for them to go to a hoops game in February if Rue Paul is about 5-11 at the time. 135 fans wearing bags over their heads is very impressive. Got to go, Red Sox vs Yanks! Go Sox....reverse the c(k)urse!
  4. Is it definite Matt Shaw committed/verballed to the Salukis?
  5. but your credibility has dipped since you were seen in the Burkha. By the way how do I get my check to you?
  6. The assistant pro at our course is from Belleville and a bills fan. Because he has done so many favors for me with tee times...I ordered two Billiken hats one with the Cardinal style STL on the front and Billy on the back and one with Billy on front and the stl on the back. He took the one with Billy on the front and has got quite a bit of attention with it in his travels. Being considerably younger than me and single, he is able to capitalize. My God, I think we've figured out the Billiken is a....oh heavens....a SEX SYMBOL! I sure hope that big dollar female donor who was offended by the BABY BLUES is not reading this...we could end up with a new mascot. Now introducing your St.Louis University Cervantes! or Your St. Louis University Mud Bellies!
  7. Decrepit who?.....Rich is right you are a bitter man...picking on the AARP crowd. I'm gonna make sure when I finally do meet you, my walker will be weighted down. By the way DID SHAW ANNOUNCE?
  8. I was out at a local pub the other day and a rather attractive young lady saw me getting out of my truck with the "Billy" decal on the back and asked if "that cute little thang" (dixie chick talk for thing) on my back window was a troll or a space man. I told her it was a Billiken, which led to, "what's a Billiken?" Ooooh to have been about 25 again.
  9. I'd take Shaw if he gives us his commit. However, I really don't think UB is too worried about holding this spot open until the spring. Here's my thinking. Assume Evans recovers and returns to form, UB gives him the fourth scholie. Oh no, no PF! We need a PF! Well look what may develop over the season. JJ brings it on, or....is it just possible UB sees Ian, aka Zorba as the PF! Or IO works into that position. Remember UB was pretty high on this kid when he spoke about him this summer. Now, say we sign Evans. You might be looking at a starting lineup in 2004-05 of: PG:Clarke/Polk/AJ/Lidell at PG ( I don't think he'd start Polk at PG as a frosh, and I'm betting this is where Darren gets most of his mpg this year) #2: Bryant, AJ, Meyers plus Meyers, and AJ (AJ ain't giving up time without a fight) #3: Lidell/Evans (let's say Tommy doesn't qualify, Evans would look pretty tempting then), IO, Meyers Ian aka Zorba, JJ,IO Frericks, Husak But you know, no matter how you look at it, you're going to have some pretty intense competition at all positions, which is always a healthy situation. I like the way UB is shaping this program.
  10. Steve, are you at the Kandahar or Baghdad branch of GWU? I thought you were going to the main campus....TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!
  11. Jesse The Ghost Leonard, from Mississippi, man that brings back some memories. I really don't remember much about that freshman team. I do remember the following Freshman season when Polk brought in about 15 kids. Believe they went undefeated or close to it. I know they beat the Mizzery Frosh at Kiel when we played them in 71-72. One of the players was a kid named Nance from Chicago. He was one of the first players I ever saw do the scissors dribble. I seem to recall he got into some sort of trouble his sophomore year at SLU and that was it. Did anyone go to the playoff game against UL at Bradley that year. One could write a movie about our road trip up there. We actually lost one of our travelling mates after the game. Seems he found a young Bradley Co-ed and ended up taking a bus back to SLU the next day.
  12. Thanks for encouraging your sons to attend SLU. In addition to playing D1 ball they will get an excellent education. One of the trademarks of a Jesuit education is they teach one how to think not just remember. A word of caution, this board is very HONEST in it's assessment of players. Sometimes you may read opinions about your sons that are not to your liking. But no one means it maliciously. For the most part all of us know they are young and are trying to adapt to a whole new world, and really want them to achieve for both themselves and the Billikens. Forgive us in advance for we are fans.
  13. The ID thread got really long. Quite a diverse bunch we are...but one thing in common we love Billiken Hoops. It would indeed be great to have beers with fellow Billiken fans. By the way would anyone care to write Triangle and Too's bio....thought for sure he'd regale us with something really amazing.
  14. Bob Polk had a unique way of breaking a press as I recall. He would put all five players in the backcourt and look for a long break away pass. Irving was the recepient on many of those tosses. I like Irving. He was quick and had a good jumper from 15-20 ft. Thanks for bringing back a memory. Interesting, I met Austin Carr in Cleveland about eight years ago at a Golf outing. Brought up the game and he smiled. Says his most memorable moment of the game was when he was running off the court after the end, SLU students were throwing pennies at him. Also, it was one of the larger crowds at the old arena. I think they topped 10,000. I can't remember any of the players on the Freshman team but remember they played before most Varsity games.
  15. I read the string on the Mizzery board. Ooch! There are some very sensitive tiger fans over there. Are they being a touch overly sensitive about their top flight head coach? Also it's nice to see them conscious of what is happening at SLU. Cripes I don't see why they'd care about little old SLU. Aren't they destined for the final four plus bringing in a top five recruiting class? C'mon play us ya bums!
  16. BS in Economics from the old School of Commerce and Finance in '72. Originally from Maine. Believe it or not fell in love with the Billikens when they played the Vinnie Ernst led Providence Friars in either the 59-60 NIT. Don't know why because they lost. Attended almost every home Billiken game while at SLU with a die hard group of hoops junkies and made a few road trips as well. It was sad seeing only 3,000 of us in the old arena, but have fond memories of some great games like the year we almost beat ND who was led by Austin Carr. Worked in the Logistics field for +25 years, mostly in Ohio. Finally decided to semi-retire in Charleston, SC (fell in love with it on Golf trips). Now own my own Logistics firm, which is a little more than a part time job. Can't play golf everyday, can you? Also, working on a second career that has always been a dream of mine to do. Married (not the first time) and have two grown up kids who were both baptized at St.X church by Father Boland. Will be attending the Charlotte game and hope to make Atlanta for GT. When I was in Ohio went to see the Bills play X, UC, UL, and one time Dayton. This board has been a saviour for my Billiken fixation. Up until two years ago, the most information I got was from the Sunday scores. My biggest wish for us Billiken fans is that the powers that be at SLU keep UB in the stable. We need a "stable" coaching situation.
  17. I sensed a little dig at Pretty Q-"he doesn't have moussed up hair and 25 street agents on speed dial".
  18. Ok, here we go again. When 'Zo was here we were all worried about him going to UCLA, WASH, etc. Now UB. I'm not so sure, and hopefully you guys who know more about him will back me up, that UB is looking for a move. To prevent it SLU should see the benefits of stabilizing the HC position and reward him appropriately. Take Crean, I don't think he'd leave MU for MSU. I think UB's the kind of guy that does not want to move around. He seems to like StL and he also strikes me as the guy that wants to see the results of what he is building here. The new Arena will be a coaches recruiting dream. The A-10 is good for the program. Long Live King UB at SLU!!!!
  19. Thicks, does AB's lack of praise for the team give you concern about this year?
  20. I know I have been one of the most vociferous critics of the 'Zo years and you guys have defended him nobly. Well, I have finally come to see the light. While I regularly knocked 'Zo's recruiting strategy, I now come to you both on bended knees and hat in hand. I am not worthy. 'Zo may very well have recruited to SLU the potentially greatest name in Billiken history-UNCLE BRAD SODERBURG. What this guy has done in his short span as HC is unfriggingbelievable. Where we had no recruiting base in St.L. area we now land three of the best and hot after the fourth (Shaw). Also, we are led to believe we may have the inside track on young Kevin Lisch. The Billiken future is bright, and, with egg on face, we owe it all to Mr. Lorenzo Romar for having the good sense to hire UB. I hope I am forgiven. (NOTE TO Thicks: Haven't forgotten what we discussed last week.)
  21. I think they are usually at the player's school. Please Tommie...oh please make it SLU.
  22. The Wizards are practicing in Charleston at CofC. All practices are closed otherwise I would wear my Billiken hat and try and get the legends attention. They had an article yesterday in the paper about Kwami Brown and the offseason moves made by the Wizards especially about the big Arena's contract. They listed Arenas and Stackhouse as guards. No mention of the legend at all. I kind of got the feeling he was the forgotten man. This is good to see.
  23. First thanks for the good news heads up about Lidell. Now, we know he spent the summer hitting the books. How does it look for him qualifying for next year? Or, and this is no problem, will we see him in 2005-06? Just wondering as would like to see him on the floor in Billiken Blue as soon as possible.
