  1. As expected, the Eagles 16s rolled to the finals. They stumbled a bit in the final game but still won it. Adam Knollmeyer, the 6'7 PF from Helias almost singlehandedly beat Gateway in the semifinals. He must have scored at least 25 points on a variety of post moves and offensive putbacks. He's about 210 lb, fairly athletic and is fundamentally sound. Ben Hansbrough really needs to tone it down a notch. All the screaming and strutting he does after making a routine play is really unnecessary -- this isn't the NFL. He is a really good rebounder for a 6'3 guard, and a decent passer but needs to work on his defense and going to his left. Jarod Leonard continues to improve. He was the Eagles' best player in the final game, rebounds well despite his slight frame, plays good on the ball defense and slashes well. He needs to work on his passing, particularly his entry passing into the post. The 6'0 shooting guard from Webster, Justin Taylor, has springs in his shoes. He can get to the rim, levitate and finish. Justin didn't look for his jump shot today but I know from the regular season that he has a nice stroke. Needs to improve his handle. Civic Memorial PG Stephen Jones is going to be really good when he learns to stop dominating the ball so much. He handles and shoots well but has a tendency to pound the ball too long at the top of the key and consequently the offense stagnates. Dustin Maguire, Gateway 16s best player, still hasn't cooled off the regular season, as he rained jump shots from 2-3 feet behind the three point line. That kid can really shoot it and has a solid frame -- 6'4 200 lb. Matt Lawrence did some clutch rebounding and free throw shooting down the stretch to put the Gateway 17s into the final game but I'm not sure how they made out. His combination of size (6'6), shooting and rebounding make him the 2nd best overall player in the metro area's 2005 class, IMO.
  2. http://www.chicagohoops.com/articles/e1.html "Liddell, a 6-5 point guard, pumped in 32 points in his team's opening game, and had college coaches clamoring to find information on him. Liddell played in the tournament with Team Detroit. Liddell has yet to receive a qualifying ACT score. At this point, Liddell appears to be a long shot to qualify, and this fact has some Big 10 coaches quietly inquiring about Liddell's services. According to one Team Detroit official, several high profile prep schools are very much interested in bringing him on board. Hargrave Military Academy head coach Kevin Keatts, who's team is coming off a 25-1 season, is said to have inquired about Liddell's position in the event he attends Hargrave."
  3. There's at least a half dozen threads about him in the archives but here's the Hoopmasters profile: Vas'shun Newborne 6-6 220 (SO) PF Chipola CC, FL This aggressive rebounder plays like his 6-9 around hoop, he's long and explosive off the floor, but really caught our eye with a nice touch to 17-feet. He has a lot of interest from the likes of Northern Iowa, South Alabama, Western Kentucky, Central Florida, Wisconsin Green Bay, St. Louis, Montana State, and SE Louisiana
  4. Tip off is 6:15 pm. I recommend watching the Eagles 16s play. They've got a nice squad - 6'4 SF Kyle Kirk, 6'5 SF Jarod Leonard, 6'7 PF Adam Knollmeyer, 6'0 PG Stephen Jones. More info on the front of page of mosports.com
  5. http://www.chipola.edu/extrac/athl/basketb...-2004-stats.htm 11.2 ppg, 53% FG, 7.5 rpg. About 45% of his rebounds came on the offensive boards. Heaven knows we need the help there.
  6. Man, these guys show no mercy. Check this out: http://www.paigesportsarena.com/bball/camps.html
  7. At least Quin has done something positive while he's been in Columbia. He's provided at least a year's worth of material for that site. Jimmy Mac deserves better than that joke of a coach.
  8. I agree with (1). I also think that Tommie isn't going to wait until summer to decide if he is going to prep school. Just a hunch.
  9. How many kids are coming for official visits in April?
  10. This kid can flat out shoot. http://www.swtimes.com/archive/2004/March/...s/uafs_men.html "Cox will have to replace seven sophomores, including guards Alan Daniels and Lonnie Smith. During the tournament, Daniels averaged 22 points per game and was 10 of 18 shooting from 3-point range."
  11. C'mon guys. Give our people a little more credit than this. What's next, telling them that the building should have windows? :-)
  12. Flashback to Shaw's verbal commitment: http://www.southernillinoisan.com/rednews/...rts/SPO001.html In the middle of SIU's recruitment of Shaw, Saluki head coach Bruce Weber took the job at Illinois and Painter was handed the reins. But Painter, then the assistant, was the Saluki coach Shaw had the most contact with. "At first I was a little iffy about it," Shaw said. "I never really got to know Coach Weber that well." But it was a word or two from Mount Vernon's Kent Williams, who recently finished up his stellar career at SIU, that helped seal Shaw's decision. "It was very important," Shaw said. "I found out me and Kent are a lot alike. One of my concerns was the respect that the players had for Coach Painter. And he helped me out a lot here. He thought everybody (in the program) respected him. "My development as a player was another concern. (Williams) said all the coaches down there, even through they are new, he knew Coach Painter would work with me. Those were my main concerns." After being reportedly courted by the entire Missouri Valley Conference, Shaw's decision came down to SIU and Saint Louis, which recently received its third oral commitment from East St. Louis standout Tommie Liddell. Sometimes, saying 'No' is harder than saying, 'Yes.' And it was for Shaw when it came to tell Saint Louis coach Brad Soderberg which direction he was heading. "It took me awhile to get up the strength to do it," said Shaw, who joked that he couldn't get his dad to do it for him.
  13. What a whirlwind 12 months this has been for Matt Painter. He goes from being the assistant coach at SIU to sewing up the head coaching position at Purdue. Some people have all the luck.
  14. You just don't like Roy. Quit trying to pretend you're doing us a favor.
  15. "i am trying to point out - to you and other board members - that overzealousness in trying to show a recruit some billiken love" And Roy is trying to point out that 1. He lets Brad do the recruiting 2. Pre-existing relationships are exempt from NCAA rules. If you've known a kid since he was six you don't all of a sudden have to stop talking to him.
  16. Tisby went back to Kansas because he was homesick. If he wants to stay close to home, we've got as a good a shot as anybody. Check out the recruiting boards for Kansas and Kentucky - they've got bigger fish to fry.
  17. I'd wager that the Purdue situation will be played out by the end of the week.
  18. I've seen Chris Kellerman play several times. Nobody would confuse him with a top 400 player, let alone a top 100 player. The Tillema kid leads his team in scoring, rebounding, assistsa and steals despite having a 6'11 top 50 teammate that is going to Wisconsin.
  19. Hoopmasters is in love with Tillema -- they've moved him into the Top 100 -- much to the surprise of Badger posters: http://pub104.ezboard.com/fbadgermaniacsba...cID=15497.topic I really want to see him play -- 8 rebounds and 2 blocks per game is not consistent with the Badger fans' description that he is a step slow and can't defend his position.
  20. Here's another article with more complete stats: http://www.citizenol.com/articles/2004/03/...sports/sp01.txt The junior finished the season with an average of 19.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4 assists, two steals and two blocks a contest while shooting 62.1 percent from the field and 44.2 percent from beyond the arc. Tillema didn't hurt the Rockets from the line either, tossing in 77.3 percent of his attempts while eclipsing the 1,000-point plateau in the state final game against Hilbert. "Ryan really stepped up with Greg out and then when Marcus went down, especially on both ends of the court. He became our defensive presence inside," Haffele said. "He's tougher than most people give him credit for."
  21. The Badgermaniac board has been covering this player for some time. He's got a very good stroke for a 6'7 player and decent athleticism but he's basically a spot up shooter at this point. The prevailing thought on the Badger board is that he's not quick enough to guard his position in the Big 10. I haven't seen him play myself. Here's his profile from the Journal Sentinel: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/prep/mar04/216154.asp A 6-7 junior who expanded his game after teammate Greg Stiemsma was sidelined with an injury. Kept Randolph on track as it compiled a 26-0 record, won the Trailways Conference Northern Division title and won the Division 4 state championship. Scored 496 points in 26 games, a 19.1 average. "He had to play a whole different game," said John Nedelcoff, the coach at Mayville. "He had to play inside for two-thirds of the year. He shoots it a lot better than he did last year. He's as good, if not better than (Steve) Novak at this stage. He could put the ball on the floor. He's a good passer and he can score." Here's a pic: http://www.citizenol.com/content/articles/...sports/sp01.jpg
  22. No, Meyer is a slasher. He likes to take you off the dribble and either stop and pop or go strong to the hole.
  23. Meyer's main competition for minutes is Darren Clarke. We'll see what happens.
