Legion1818
Legion 1818 needs the help of soccer-wise fans, and the general SLU Billiken supporter! We are currently in the process of drafting an extensive list of songs and chants we may be able to use come Fall, during the soccer season at Hermann Stadium. ANY ideas are welcome. At this point, the only limit I'd have to impose is that we wish not to curse, as families with children are ever present at SLU games. Here's some links that may be able to get you started: http://home.wanadoo.nl/maarten.geluk/ http://www.section8chicago.com/news/press_detail.asp?prID=13 (Fire Supporters) http://www.kccauldron.com/songs_chants.html (KC Wizards supporters) http://www.red11.org/mufc/songs.htm (Man Utd) http://celtic.soccer24-7.com/chants.html (Celtic FC- Scotlands CATHOLIC football club, most noted for their EXTREMEM rivalry with Rangers FC, a PROTESTANT club. Both teams play in Glasgow) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_chants Finally, check out this page on Wikipedia about the culture of ULTRAS, which we are, to a smaller degree, trying to emulate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultras Either post a message here, or e-mail us at [email protected] THANKS! Billiphan
I've always been fond of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" I believe the Band sings this and Jerry Garcia does a nice version as well. That would be great to hear at a game. Also, Left of the Dial by the Replacements is another great song. Perhaps the Legion can get started on these. I'll try to come up with more. kevinfootes
and pick up some Lyle Lovett or Grand Funk Railroad tunes. Roy probably knows some good songs by Rainbow!
Box and Won
"Roy probably knows some good songs by Rainbow!" We already know this to be the case. If I hear "Holy Diver" at a soccer game, I'll know Roy had something to do with it.
billikenmetz
I'd like to see Blue t-shirts with White lettering with "ALL HAIL" on the front and "SAINT LOUIS U." on the back and the Legion 1818 logo on the front under the "ALL HAIL" and "Legion 1818" on the back under the "SAINT LOUIS U." the usual "Let's go Bills clap clap clap clap clap" have 4 members of the Legion with plaquards reading WE ARE SAINT LOUIS stand on the four corners of the field and have the crowd yell to the corresponding sign. They do this at ND football games and is always a fan favorite a live mascot like a goat tied up and wearing a blue scarf or something, ala the Disney movie "Big Green," and have a different "Keeper of the Goat" every game. That person has to wear a suit and sunglasses, looking like a secret service agent. This person cannot let anyone who isn't in Legion 1818 touch or take a picture with the goat without a $5 donation. Box and Won
I'm always a fan of "unofficial" mascots, such as Keggy from Dartmouth:
Billiphan
Shouldn't we try to be more original than ripping off ND and a Disney movie? No offense but we can come up with better than that. What about if all 20 fans sang in unison Classic Girl by Janes Addiction. The opposing team would by hynotized by the lyrics.
Pistol
Sure, that's original, but no one would do it or like it. Simple and completely original is hard to do. Might as well find something that the fans will participate in and enjoy.
billikenmetz
Aren't you a party pooper? I suppose you're overflowing with ideas. thanks for helping the cause, phan.
Billiphan
>Aren't you a party pooper? I suppose you're overflowing with >ideas. > >thanks for helping the cause, phan. Bmetz, Not trying to be critical. I just know that you can come up with better. I've suggested three songs that I'm quite sure never get played at soccer games. When the Bills are entering the field all 15 fans could make two lines so the players can run between them and the fans could sing Rock Superstar by Cypress Hill. That would get everyone stoked. SLUBALLS
I am actually in favor of having a couple lines of Legion 1818 people for the players to walk/run through as they enter the field. First half and second half.
billikenmetz
I like that and have some players jump and do chest bumps with Legionites...that would be cool. We gotta start somewhere, Phan. As the season progresses, I'm sure ideas will arise. How cool would it be to see Doogie chest bump people after a big win?!?!
Legion1818
There are definitely a lot of good ideas in this thread. I like a lot of the songs mentioned, and the idea of an unofficial mascot is quite clever. Thanks for all the feedback thus far. Keep the ideas comin'! Legion1818
Guys! We are still in need of your help. I've got some more resources for you to look at if you can take some time to jot down some lyrics for good ole SLU. http://www.youtube.com/results?search=socc...s&search=Search This is videos of different global football chants. http://www.footballchants.org/index.php British database compiling many chants from the Isles across the pond. Also, if you all have any downloading programs such as LimeWire, Morpheus, Kazaa, etc, I HIGHLY recommend downloading TWO SONGS: 1) "You'll Never Walk Alone" by various artists (there are over 100 versions). Lyrics originally by Rogers & Hammerstein. 2) "You'll Never Walk Alone" by Liverpool FC fans -or- Celtic FC fans. LISTEN to the two songs, how they are the same, but surprisingly different in tone, beat and rhythm. If poosible, try to find a song we all might, and can somehow apply to the cause. peace
Legion1818
In addition to my last post, I've been taking some of your suggestions to heart, and I've been researching a possible "unofficial" mascot for Legion 1818, or for SLU soccer, as dubbed by the fans. Here's my idea: The BLUE ANGELS. Reason: Well, I looked up the term "fleur de lis" on Wikipedia, and came across an interesting tidbit about the symbol. Apparently, the US Navy's Blue Angels perfom an aerial maneuver named the "fleur de lis" which results in a shape similar to the symbol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleur_de_lis#Other_meanings). So, after I found this out, I thought it was perfect for a few other reasons as well: 1) Since a Legion is a group of men serving their country, I thought it was fitting we use a reference to the US Navy. 2) SLU's primary color, other than white, is Blue. 3) 'Angels', for the most part, have a connotation associated to Christianity... and we just happen to be a Catholic school. Opinions? Thoughts? Let me know. I hope you all like it.
Alonzo P Hawk
it's too sheila. too girlie. something stronger. something more fierce. something simple. like someone dressed up as an imperial storm trooper. that would be the ultimate mascot. ------------------------------------------------------------ *Official Billikens.com sponsor of Mike Beczkala

billikenmetz
I think the best thing we could do would have random people wear costumes to the game. Like have a bunch of guys in regular Legion garb, then have this guy in the middle... http://onthepatio.typepad.com/on_the_patio...ooper_patio.jpg have just random people wearing costumes every game...will be funny to those with dry senses of humor... I think at the end of the game if we win, we should sing the theme song from "Cheers." sometimes you want to go...
Box and Won
Kind of like the guy in the Blue Crew who wears a chicken costume every once in a while. It's awesome! I'm a big fan of the random costume idea. These are good costumes as well, playing off our Jesuit heritage. NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms. LoveforVouk
Got a better idea for what to wear....Have people dress as either Rev. Lawrence Biondi or one of their favorite statues around campus. It would be funny to see everyone dressed as a statue.
Iggy
...or bring some statues to the game to sit with you.
