SLU Soccer Week 6 Rankings

I have never been a big fan of rankings (particularly the peculiar and illogical reaction to how things change over the season) but this week I would have to say that these rankings are completely illogical and random. Top Drawer is the worst. SLU beats their CURRENT #7 at home and loses to their current 24th on the road and drops 7 places out of the poll. I would be the first to admit that before beating Creighton SLU might have been overrated--but beating Creighton means they beat a top team and should not lose ground if they also lose to another ranked team on the road. Soccer America moves SLU up at least.

NSCAA (coaches): SLU 26th (RV, 3 places worse)

Top Shelf (website): SLU 27th (RV, 7 places worse)

College Soccer News (website): SLU 23rd (1 place worse )

Soccer America (website): SLU 22nd (3 places better)

Soccer Times (coaches): SLU 21st (out later this week)

Ken Massey (computer): SLU 39th (10 places better)

Unofficial RPI (computer): SLU 46th (losing to VCU and other action cost SLU 24 places)

NCAA RPI (computer): SLU 43rd

Dayton keeps winning against mediocre competition (10-0) and starting to get a little love in the polls. Beating Dayton (home) and Louisville (away) are the big challenges going forward. Need two home wins against Fordham (3-6) and GW (3-6) this weekend,

In other SLU soccer-related news, Brad Davis has been elevated to USMNT ahead of a qualifier against Jamaica. Nice to see Brad back with the squad, although the low-lifes who comment on this link are trolling the $hit out of him.

Only read about half, but I didn't see any low lifes "trolling" Brad, just disputing Kilnsi's decision to pull him in. Always root for a Billiken, but its not exactly obvious that he should have been one of three called in.

SLU gets the win over Fordham but plays to a 1-1 draw at home against the now (3-6-2) George Washington. I guess we will not need a new ranking thread this week.

It looks like Pavisic--my friend was right!--and Kohring got the start with Kristo and Manning coming in off the bench.

I did not go, but does anyone else care to explain what happened?

First game I've been to this year, so others may have better observations. Felt like SLU dominated the first 60 minutes or so. Had a ton of corners and it seemed like GW didn't get passed midfield until about 15 minutes into the game. Didn't get a ton of scoring chances outside of the corners. Goal was on a throw in. Throw in went to front post, headed on and knocked in at back post. Goal was w/ about 2 min to go in half. I would say for the last 20 minutes or so, GW finally started pushing up and putting a lot more pressure on our defense and outside mids. Whereas we were initially knocking the ball around unpressured and setting up the offense, we started making careless turnovers. Their goal as off a corner. From my perspective, it was close as to whether the ball actually went over the endline as our keeper tried to keep it in play. Pretty basic corner and a nice finish to tie it up with about 2 minutes to go in game. SLU had a couple of breakaway chances and couldn't finish.

Everyone was on the ref the whole game. He made some questionable calls all game and probably both ways. The game got pretty chippy. Players, coaches, fans were all yelling at him. Best example was when one of our players fouled one of theirs behind the play. Ref blows his whistle, starts to pull out the yellow card, and has NO CLUE who the foul was on. Starts asking GW who the card should be on. It was really odd. One thing I will say...Sweetin had to have called a guy an "f-ing psycho" at least 3 times in front of two different refs and we could hear it clearly in the stands. I'm sure the other team was saying things too, but I'm surprised he wasn't carded or dismissed for that. Maybe I'm getting old....Just don't remember getting away with that in my day. By the way, pretty sure Sweetin was right...

Overall, felt like SLU was the better team most of the game. GW seemed to pack it in and we couldn't break through. Needed to execute better on our corners.

SLU played the first half as the better team should...in their opponents end of the field. GW was playing a 4-4-2, packing it in and looking for a counter. SLU had a few opportunities to score, but finished only one and did not capitalize on any set pieces. In attempting to protect the 1-0 lead, the second half was played defensively, in SLU's end of the field. We looked tentative and uncomfortable, and allowed GW back into the game as they scored off a corner with less than 3 minutes to go. A corner that could have been avoided in my opinion. For the quality of athletes playing, this game had little rhythm and too many cheap fouls. The refereeing could have been better, especially the off-side calls, but it was not bad enough to justify the mouthy lack of respect. A few early yellows might help to deter the chippiness and make for a more entertaining game.
