slu72
Say Keady leaves Purdue and Painter of SIU gets the post. Does Matt Shaw get out of his LOI to attend SIU and come to good old SLU. Hey we were his second choice? Of course, he wants to be an engineer and Purdue is one of the top engineering schools in the world.
kshoe
that Purdue would want to hire a coach in his young 30s with a total of 1 years head-coaching experience.

Hey we were his second choice? Of course, he >wants to be an engineer and Purdue is one of the top >engineering schools in the world. Kids sign LOI's with schools, not the coach. I don't like the idea of letting kids out of their LOI because a coach leaves as it screws the school, it screws the current players, and it screws prospective players whom may have wanted to attend that school but couldn't, so they went elsewhere. Kids should honor their committment they made to the university.

Kids should honor their committment they made to >the university. You sound like an NCAA administrator. It is the coach's departure, not the recruit's departure, that ultimately hurts the school and its players. While the players may commit to "schools" in name, the reality is that players commit to coaching staffs. It is the coaching staff, not the school's admission staff, that spend hundreds of hours recruiting kids and building the relationships. A coach's departure is much more unfair to a recruit than the recruit's departure is to the school. No one like it when Ryan Hollin's was released from his LOI to SLU, but it was right thing to do when Romar left.
SIUSalukis
Definately, Painter is too young for Purdue. I also don't think he is that good of a coach. :-)
Billikenbooster
I guess Josh Fischer should have stayed at Pepperdine.
billiken_roy
as of late, unless the kid wants to follow his coach (see josh fisher) the ncaa has been letting everyone out of loi's for just about any reason. the fact they let kris humphries out of the duke deal last year really sucked and took the wind out of that rule imo. SLUNATE
..that players should definately be let out of their commitment if a coach departs. I, for one, think they need tougher contracts with the coaches, but that is a different issue. A player is committing a significant time in his life to a school, but really it's the coach, his style of play, the promises he makes to a player that garners a commitment. I have no problem with releasing players in those circumstances.
SLUNATE
...when the player in question hasn't even suited up for the school.
