Effect of Mizzou to B10 on SLU

There is another thread about UM going to the B10 and its impact on coverage of the B12 in St. Louis. Actually that thread, IMO misses the key point about that possible Conference move.

If the B10 picks up UM most speculations is that it will also pick up 2-4 other schools, making it a 14-16 team Conf. The other schools are all in the Big East (Rutg./ Syrac./ Pitt/ WVA/ND) If that "informed" speculation is correct then that will signal the end of the BE as a football conf., meaning that the other FB schools (LVL/Cincy) will need to find a new home. Again the same "experts" see both the ACC and SEC expanding providing a possible home for the remaining BE FB schools. Those same people see Texas and T A&M as joining up with the SEC and Colo. going to the PAC 10. Essentially, the B12 as we know it today will disappear.

Moving to how all that impacts SLU: If the BE is truly falling apart then that will be what we have all discussed on this Board-a new Conference, made up of BB only schools forming a true D1 BB powerhouse , consisting of most, if not all BE BB only schools joined by 4-6 other BB only schools e.g. X, UD SJU, Duq and SLU. Guys all the "Why we want to stay in the A-10 vs. the MVC" discussion might finally become moot. Our dream BB Conference might be imminent!

The Big XII, ironically, might have to go back to the old SWC teams it left behind...Southern Meth, Rice, maybe even TCU. Of course, this would mean a lot of these schools would have to upgrade their facilities (or just play all their games at the Cotton Bowl).

Big 12 is gonna be a midmajor conference when all this is said and done.

Especially if it has to give a piggyback ride to those old SWC teams...which I really and unfortunately see happening.

UH/Rice and SMU/TCU would be great regional rivalries, but who would want to see SMU play Iowa State in Ames or TCU play in the Purple People Eater Bowl against K-State?

I think you could argue the opposite. If MU is one of 1, 3, or 5 teams that the Big 10 adds it decreases the possiblity of the "dream" conference for SLU. For the dream conference to occur, we need a significant shake-up of the Big East. The more teams the Big 10 takes from the Big East the better from that perspective. If MU is one of them, it means there is one less team to leave the Big East.

To me there are two things that need to happen for the dream conference to form.

1) the Big East football must lose its BCS status somehow.

2) SLU must make itself desireable enough on the court so that when the 8 non football BCS schools splinter off and look for new conference mates, presumably from the A-10, we are one of the top picks. We can't be the ugly girl in the corner and expect to get picked. We need to put on some make-up, use a push-up bra, whatever it takes, if we think we are going to be invited to the cool kid party.

Here is the latest on Big Ten expansion

Big Ten expansion buzz has league adding Mizzou, Nebraska, Pitt, Rutgers and Syracuse and splitting into four, four-team divisions.

The Big Ten divisions: Syra, Pitt, Rut., Penn St.--Mich., Wisc., Mich. St., Mnn.--Ohio St., Pur., IU, Ill./North.--MU, Iowa, Neb., Ill./NU. about 4 hours ago via web

Can the Big East survive the loss of Pitt, Rutgers, and Syracuse? A hoops conference with the Big East schools might really happen in a few years.

The PAC 10, SEC and ACC also will expand. The finances driving the Big 10 realignment is also there for these other conferences which will need to add schools or risk disappearing as a conference. There will be nothing left - as a conference - of the Big East. The Big 12 will split in half. Texas will either to decide to play in the SEC or the PAC 10. When that happens, the ACC will pick up what's left of the Big East. The remaining Big 12 schools will have no choice but to join with the Conf USA schools.

Schools like Marquette, GTown, St. John and DePaul can only watch from the sidelines like SLU. Football is king.

I would think Iowa State might be mentioned as a possible Big 10 candidate, with Iowa already there.

Television and football are kings... make that the joint money gods or 800 pound gorillas. You can bet the other conferences are looking at the B-10 business model... their own TV network in populous big states where good ol' State U reigns supreme. That's one reason I don't see ISU going to the Big 10... Iowa would vote no way. Texas now becomes a key player in this whole thing. If they go PAC 10 and Colorado follows... watch out the domino effect will gain momentum and conferences will be scrambling to add teams. What we'll be left with is that 4 power 16 member conference thing... PAC 10, B-10, SEC, and ACC. Good, let 'em have at it. The Beast BB only schools will be adrift and that's when the Prexies ought to sit around a table and create a really powerful BB only conference made up mostly of Catholic institutions. Most of these schools have proud BB traditions and histories and can serve as a thorn in the side to the Big 4 conferences when it comes to hoops. I can't see how SLU will be left out since this conference will have to be somewhere between 14-16 teams divided by geographical locations. It all makes too much sense not too happen. In fact they should be talking now and going to some of the sports networks, ie ESPN, Fox, Comcast and laying the foundation. Why wouldn't such a conference be attractive to these networks? Most of the schools are located in big metro market areas with good solid fan bases, natural rivalries, and large student bodies.
