Conditioning

Duke's starters played almost the entire game. Butler had far more substitution, although some was dictated by foul trouble. When you look at Duke's run through the tournament, how can you buy into that SLU was worn out with their short bench at the end of the year? If you haven't seen the boxscore for last nite's game, check it out before you respond to this...

2 variables off the top of my head are that: 1) Duke has a much more experienced, veteran team, guys who have been playing at this level for a few years now; every one of the guys who spent significant time on the floor for them has more seniority than our most experienced guys. Big men especially take years to get to their physical potential. And 2) When you're playing for a national championship and not a CBI championship, it's more likely that you can mentally force yourself to do things you otherwise wouldn't or shouldn't physically do. There's no 'shutting down' until the thing is over. This is another thing that improves with experience, but there isn't nearly as much reason for our guys to kill themselves to play 100% for the CBI title.

They also have longer time outs and half times. That's a big factor with fatigue.

1. The 3 players that played significant minutes were all Jr's and Sr's. Ours were 2 Soph's and a Freshman.

2. SLU played 4 games in 9 days one of them being a double overtime game. In the 4 games the 3 guards averaged

CS - 37.25 mpg

KC - 36.5 mpg

KM - 35 mpg.

Just because Duke has 3 upperclassmen who I'm sure were exhausted, doesn't mean SLU's players weren't in great condition

I can't figure out why people don't realize that our youth plays a big part in current sonditioning and muscle development of our players. The off season work out program is where that comes from. We had a total of four players that had gone through 1 year of the off season work five if you want to count Femi who was also injury rehabbing.

The increased fitness level and muscle development will come as the kids spend more time in the program

I just saw a thread for 'conditioning'. How can backhand help?!?

when duke's upperclassmen were freshmen and sophomores, they were bounced from the NCAA Tournament in the first round by VCU. the following year, they were clobbered by Villanova in the second round. A much more experienced team went into the postseason with 22 wins, gelled and won a national title. most of their key players are veterans and that makes a big difference.

before someone brings up butler, they are young, but remember, howard is a jr., jukes is a 5th year sr., veasley is a sr. van zant is a jr. and zahn, the 3-point shooter is a jr. a lot of experience to surround those two sophomore studs.

there were many occasions when we had players going well over the 40-minute mark in those overtime and double-overtime games.

Imagine spending nine days in Philly, where they won two games, could not get back to St. louis until Friday afternoon with dayton already here and waiting. When go out and win a double-overtime game against a bigger, more experienced, deeper and more athletic team.

and remember cody. he performed without any kind of conditioning base for the season.

Can you imagine a team losing three or four players at one position and doing what the Bills did. Sooner or later, it will catch up with you. Michigan State and West Virginia survived and made the Final 4 without their starting point guards, but their performances in Indy were dreadful without them.

ask ohio state about having very little depth. They have some great players, but they wilted down the stretch against a much deeper Tennessee team.

bad boyz for life
