Xavier fans worry every year that Dixon will leave Pitt for one of the few higher-status jobs in the country and that Miller will then fill that job. I think the Pitt HC job has always been a pretty solid position. For UCLA to go outside of the Bruin family for Ben Howland speaks volumes to that. I think the Bruins were smart to clean house and rid themselves with any mess left over from the Harrick-Lavin era. Wish the Bills would have done that when Romar left. Howland went to UCLA because he grew up near there and it has always been his dream to coach there. Was it a good situation for the CA native, yes. But in the grand scheme of things, UCLA was smart to seek a new HC with relatively zero ties to the program. We should have done that in 2002, when Romar went back to Seattle and to recruit program-changers like Nate Robinson. We should have gone hard after Mark Few or even a guy like Jim Molinary (former HC at Bradley). Doug Woolard should have been the fall guy for Soderberg, but he flew the coop to USF, leaving Soderberg to be his own fall guy. A guy like Majerus, who has the "Jesuit roots" was perfect for re-building the program in 2007, but think about what should have been done circa 2002 -- and maybe we're looking at a spot in the Boise sub-regional instead of Missouri. If anything, Doug Woolard should never be allowed back on the Frost Campus or have any interaction with university administrators for as long as he lives. You are completely unrealistic of the attractiveness of of SLU's head coaching position, especially several years ago, with zero commitment to win, bad facilities, bad budget, bad resources, non-BCS,... if you think Mark Few would have had any interest in it whatsoever, especially considering he's pulled himself out of the running at more winnable more prestigious basketball schools since that time. What incentive did he have to leave for SLU? None. It doesn't even matter that his professional career and even college career spanning 3 decades has all been in the Pacific Northwest. Even if it had been in the Midwest, he wouldn't have been interested. I don't think you also understand the difference between recruiting at BCS public schools vs a school like SLU, especially at that time. One thing we're all forgetting in this thread, Gregory was in the running for the SLU job at the time. We chose instead UB. I think we took the cheap route on the hire thinking we were getting good value in a guy who was head AC on a final four team and as an interim coach took UW to the dance under difficult circumstances. What should have been looked at harder was why UW didn't retain UB after his stint as HC. Obviously they knew something we didn't, ie the guy couldn't recruit an alcoholic to Oktoberfest. As you look back to 2002 we also did not have the full commitment for Chaifetz. It would have been hard to draw a name coach at the time. An RM type would never have come even if they upped the budget if he had to sell kids on WP and Scotttrade. UB stayed because he had no other options.
