Hate doing a home and home with a team ranked #289. But, you can only play so many schools on the road that's within 2.5 hours of here.

A few examples of A10 home-and-home scheduling over the last two seasons:

    • SLU had Auburn, Memphis, Boise St., Iona.
    • Davidson had San Francisco, Charlotte, Delaware, Northeastern.
    • Richmond had Northern Iowa, Drake, Toledo.
    • Bonnies had Buffalo, Siena, Northern Iowa.
    • Dayton had SMU, Va. Tech.
    • UMass had Harvard, North Texas.
    • VCU had Vanderbilt.
    • George Mason had Old Dominion.
    • Fordham had Central Connecticut.

Does anyone else receive aggressive messages from Big Bill Fan? I don’t pay much attention to posters or if I have a private message, but noticed I had back to back private messages from him calling me a d!ckhead, a loser, and I should be ashamed of myself. I don’t know what I would have posted, but was curious if anyone else is fortunate enough to receive similar messages from that poster. Maybe chill out a bit BBF, it’s a message board.

Yep. They're a weirdo. Just like their alter ego HenryB.

This got me thinking about tanking professional teams.

Would People be Ok with the Bills punting a few season and not spending any NIL money and then 2 years from now using the money built up and buy 4 and 5 star players?

I think I would be ok with 2 years of tanking for 2 years of stars.
Non football schools need to think outside the box if they want to compete.

I don't think SLU's NIL affiliate (or whatever the right term is) is in the business of buying players though. It sounds like they're in the business of providing "great support after graduation." The tanking approach doesn't work as well when your paying guys out 2, 3, 4 years down the road.

They don't want to have high level D1 athletics.

Army and/or Navy occasionally sneak into the Top 25 in football. That's not by accident. Also, like any other school, nationally televised games, bowl games, high rankings, etc.... are great marketing and recruiting tools. They help get the next generation of heroes to defend our country in the door.

Let’s break down the current state of the program. It’s about more than Noland and you know it.

We are coming off of a season where we being picked in the top 25 prior to the season and were seen as one of the top 2 teams in the A10 before the year started. We ended the year outside the top 100, no postseason, and had some of the worst losses since the Crews era (SIUE at home).

As of June 1st, we are still missing an assistant coach and have three open scholarships. Due to the fact that we lost three starters and several impact players, hitting the portal hard was a must. And what have we gotten? A good big that will need a waiver that he might not get, a terrible defender from a terrible team (when the current roster already has no defense), and a completely unknown Euro big (that Ford has had 0 luck on so far).

And the current roster isn’t exactly stacked either. Jimerson coming back helps, and I’m super high on Parker, but what else do we have? Our only true point guard is an undersized freshman, all of our bigs are giant question marks, and we really have nobody that can actually guard a wing effectively.

And that’s just looking at the surface level! It gets worse when you add context. I’ll make a list:

    1. We’ve only made the tournament once in 6 possible seasons (and that only happened because Tramaine Isabell turned into prime Allen Iverson for four games).

    2. We have had two de-commitments of much needed impact players and lost two assistant coaches in the last two months.

    3. The A10 continues to get worse and while the Big East is likely to expand soon, we’ve completely threw away any chance of us being able to move up.

    4. We haven’t made any strides in recruiting for 2024 and beyond.

    5. We had a local two-time National assist leader on the roster and he never made the tournament, not exactly sending a good message to any future local recruits.

    6. Our “Ace-recruiter” of a coach has a roster without a single top-150 recruit.

    7. We have the highest paid coach in the conference and he has never finished higher than 4th in 7 seasons.

Sit back and think about it. Are you happy about this? Does this make you hopeful for the future of the program? According to the AD and the FFC, we got our 20 wins so we should just shut up and take the mediocrity. Personally, I actually care about the program and would like to see it be better than this.

A lot of good points there. However, I don't think "we ended the year outside the top 100" is accurate. Wherever you look - NET (97), KenPom (96), ESPN BPI (89), Sagerin (84) - last season's team was top 100.

Agree.  Some folks just hate Ford so much, they see disaster around every corner.  My guess is that most if not all A10 teams still have unfilled spots on their rosters.  It is just the new reality of college sports.  I will be concerned if 2 of the 3 sports aren't filled by July.  Until then, I'm chilling.

Makes sense. Before the calculus was looking for a "good fit" and making a leap of faith to a program that was "best" for you. Now it's in kids interest to see if they can scare up an extra $5-10-15K. They're incentivized to wait around and see if more money comes along, whereas simply getting scholarship offers they probably had a better "final" list sooner. It might even be a good strategy for some transfers to wait until some programs feel a bit desperate and try and scare up some more alumni cash.

TV market, in our situation, is seriously overrated.  Yes STL has 4 million + potential viewers but this SLU basketball.  Even during Spoonballs height, with only over the air tv, Billikens broadcast on 11 and 5 our ratings never were comparable to any sports in town and lagged behind Mi$$ou.

What good is a media market if no one is going to watch your product?

I'd rather have Dayton's 800k potential viewers where maybe a quarter of those could watch a dayton game than SLU's .00000000000001 portion of the area's population who would even consider watching a SLU game.

There's still something to be said for media market even if the Bills aren't getting Cardinals-like viewership. There's a reason that schools like Rutgers and Cincy get scooped while Western Kentucky and Memphis get left behind. Conferences want to be in the biggest possible media markets.

Some MBM posters seem to like to spread half of the story.

Yes the Big 12 is talking/going to expand eventually to 16.  At their league meetings this week, Gonzaga's consultant Navigate, was present.  Gonzaga is looking for a P5 move.  UConn would be a 'complimentary move' with Gonzaga.  The Big 12 Commish did take a fact finding trip to UConn as reported in the Athletic.  Why would UConn move? Simply put they would receive 3X to 4X amount of money from the Big 12 (or ACC or Big 10) then they are today in the Big East.  Their football team, which is pathetic, would have to put on the afterburners to come up to P5 speed.  With the revolving portal door, that is doable.  Why wouldn't they leave the Big East?  They have a boat load of NCAA tourney shares that they would leave behind; they would have to pay a fairly large exit fee; they would not get full revenue from the Big 12, or other P5 school, for several years.  So if invited, is UConn looking at short term $ or long term $.  They also have rivalries that would be left behind, but rivalries have become almost trivial.  Money over opponent.

The Big 12 is seriously considering several Pac 12 and other schools.  Colorado is first on their list, as are Arizona, Arizona State and San Diego State.  The Pac 12's negotiation for a new TV contract is the first domino.  And it doesn't look good for the Pac 12 today.

    SLU to the Pac 12?

He does not have a full sample size for this past season....But he does have enough stats to make some projections.

First his slash line for the last season...58.3% (also his career shooting ave) /  76.3% (FT)...As he isn't a 3P shooter this translates into 2P% and FT%. ...A+ / B+.

Of significance ...had he played a full season (only played 20 games) he would have been ranked as 62nd ITN on 2P%.

If he is shows up in a Bills uniform next season...he is projected to shoot 55.9-60% from 2P land and 76-77.2% from the charity stripe.

Computer says ...he could be a major difference maker IF he plays at least 500 min this season (around 17min/gm...played 14.5 min/gm this past season)

Thanks for the analysis Wiz. Credit to Malcolm for improving his FT shooting. That 76.3% was a big step up from his prior campaigns.

    Worth the risk.

I don't know anything about Gordon's motivations, but the era of kids leaving an otherwise good situation to chase 5, 10 or $20K is upon us.

Not that they shouldn't. But "I like it here, have learned a lot, and have made good friends and relationships" is often not going to be enough to hold onto marketable players. Sucks for schools like Grambling State with limited financial support/resources.
