Fred Thatch does not have a vertical of 45". This would be the best in the NBA combine since 2001 https://www.topendsports.com/sport/basketball/testing-draft-results.htm
He can jump, for sure. But he's not an otherworldly leaper. Also, if you think Fred's head is at the rim in this picture, I've got a dog the size of a bridge I'd be willing to sell you.
Sounds great. meet me in the spot you took the picture and I'll bring you the money.
I understand optics and perspective. I said it was close to the rim. His vertical is in the 40" range. I don't know why this is such a big debate? I understand the coaches exaggerating his vertical. But do you think they'd do it by a literal foot?

Understood, my initial question was not clear.
Here's a picture of Fred Thatch with his head nearly at the rim in game. Fred stands at 6'3 (75 Inches) the rim is at 120 inches. I know there's a couple inch difference. But if he can get his head to the rim. His vertical is 45".

? I found the Tweet from Stu and it would be the highest in NBA Draft Combine history. At the time I initially posted I didn't have the exact number, but that shouldn't change the discussion.
There are guys being drafted with Verticals literally in the low 30s. NBA 2 Guard. Same position as Thatch, Jordan Poole. 35.5. I don't doubt that Thatch has a higher vertical than that

That is why I followed up, he said he thinks there is a chance that Fred Thatch has a vertical leap higher than any measured at the NBA Draft Combine.
That's not what I said. You said leaps higher than any guy in recent NBA Drafts. I said i absolutely think he has a higher vertical than some players being drafted. read the question you wrote maybe before you send it?
"You think there is a chance that Fred Thatch can leap higher than any guy in recent NBA drafts?"

Wait, are you being serious? I am finding that what was posted (Tweeted by Stu Durance as 46 1/2 inch vertical) would be the NBA Draft Combine record (46 inches is the record) and we are talking about that being Fred Thatch.
than ANY guy in recent NBA drafts give a is what you said. That's a pretty wide range.

Maybe not? You think there is a chance that Fred Thatch can leap higher than any guy in recent NBA drafts?
Absolutely.

Wait, someone actually believed that? Wasn’t something similar said about Mike Crawford?!?!
Do I think that his vertical is really as high as the coaches said. Maybe not. Do I believe that his vertical is above 40". Yes. Been at floor level while they warm up and his vertical is ridiculous

Sorry, but I would have to put that in the category of "coach-speak," especially given the staff's expectations for JG, HF and GJ (who TF described as one of the very top 3 pt shooters in the country). And lets remember that Bess predicted Perkins to be the best Billiken and he was very close to being correct, so FT had a long road to hoe to be our leading scorer.
Look guys, I drink Billiken Blue Kool Aid every year. I thought we would be very good this year (22-9 overall and 12-6 in conference) and I think we will be very good, even better, next year. I'm just sayin, I know what we are adding with GJ and FT and without more than them we are basically the team we had at the beginning of this year. A very good team, but not top 30-40, in my opinion and adding them does not make us a Sweet 16 team next year. And I hate to repeat myself, but again this assumes no top level addition to the roster. If TF and staff can get a 4 * shooter then that can make a big difference. Without that type player, we will be in the hunt just not a projected leader of the pack. As written above, I see us as top 3-5 in a very good conference and that's not too shabby.
I understand. To be transparent. This wasn't something I heard from them on the radio just trying to make the players sound good. It was something told by the coaching staff to someone in my family at the airport after the Auburn game and before the flight home. Fred's has the ability to score at all three levels. He can create his own shot. Another reminder, Fred's vertical dwarfs that of participants in this years NBA dunk contest. Before illness, I truly think he's the best athlete in the Atlantic-10. I don't doubt that they really meant it. Maybe his leading scorer numbers are only 14ppg. Doesn't mean he's doing what Perkins is doing night in and night out right now.

Happy for him. Kid deserves to be in a good program. Wish it was ours.

Yeah I agree on the calls. Kobe stepped up to a leadership position last year. Proud of his growth.
Kobe was directing traffic alot when he was on the floor. This is not a knock on Fletcher at all but he was not super aggresive last night. Definitely made some BIG plays though. They're so talented at times it feels like their offense didn't flow well. Mostly credit to Justin Tatum and CBC keeping this swinging the ball on the perimeter early and collapsing on the ball handler.
-
After seeing him in person, I really like watching Kobe Clark play. He was in foul trouble on some really soft calls. He does EVERYTHING for Vashon. Definition of Glue Guy.
-
My takes from the Vashon-CBC game
Kern: Shot well from the free throw line tonight. Know I've heard he isn;t a good shooter. Form looked good and didn't seem to miss too many
Solid finisher and had multiple up and under reverse layups avoiding blocks.
Blocked a couple shots. Met at least one person at the rim and impacted shots all night.
Good handle. Not the tight handle of a point guard, but good for a 6'5 slasher. Creative and and pretty smooth with his dribble in the open floor.
Looks like he can be a threat from three. Made quite a good percentage in warm ups. Not the same as in game, good form but not a super fast realease.
Very active defender. Took the challenge of guarding burger boy Caleb Love happily when he had to. Long and physical. Definitely has the ability to be an elite defender.
MEAN rebounder. Grabbed boards aggressivly. Boxed out well. Got fouled a couple times getting offensive rebounds.
My favorite thing about Kern, is his mouth and attitude though. He didn't stop talking the entire game. Vashon lost a little bit of grit with Kobe Clark being in foul trouble alot of the game. Kern was talking to his own players, running his mouth a little to the CBC players too. Real competitors attitude.Larry : Already an above average three point shooter. Good form. Looks the same every time.
Active defensively. Gets hands on passes and in the pocket of ball handler regularily. Going to have a lot of steals in the next two years.
He seems to always be calm no matter what. This could be good and bad. Doesn't get too fired up and doesn't seem to get too down either.
Doesn't rebound aggressively. Will have the ability to grow into his length and athleticism. But essentially needs to get a little meaner on the glass.
Could work on finishing at the rim. It should come though. Especially after Love graduates. They don't have him put the ball on the floor very often. Only saw him take maybe two shots at the rim.
Robert Martin: FAST
Not kidding he's one of the fastest players I've ever seen in high school basketball. Also never saw him out of control.
Essentially gets into the lane and by defenders at will. Made some nice passes, but nothing flashy or along the lines of the passes I saw from Yuri in high school yet.
Hit a big pull up three.
Stayed in front of ball handlers defending the point. Lots of potential. Hope he grows a couple inches.

I guess if you have never seen Kern play before tonight it might be too small of a sample size, but I would be interested in Kern's shooting ability. My impression is that he is a very similar athlete to Hargrove. Does he show the ability to shoot from 15-22 ft, in a similar manner to Jacobs?
I hope any 1-3 position (PG-SF) players we recruit are all well above average shooters and any PF recruits are above average in either or both shooting or rebounding. And while we are at it, it would be swell if they can make FT's at 70% plus, minimum.
I've only seen Kern play via live stream, Twitter highlights, and their games from the Bass Pro tournament on ESPN. I'll try to keep all of this in mind while watching!

You know, just looked it up And I don’t think I ever realized that vashon is a few blocks from Slu’s campus.
I've been going to Vashon games since I was pretty little with my Dad. If I remember correctly when Polk was a senior the St. Louis High School All Star game was held there. Watched him dribble up the court with his knees. Funny just a handful of years later he was the girls basketball coach at McCluer North while I went to school there. Being so close I've really been baffled at how we have basically been unable to recruit from Vashon in the past 15 years. I'd have a coach at every practice we're allowed at. It's barely further than Miller Career Academy. Regardless I'm just looking forward to watching the #1 Small School play the #1 Large School. I'll try to snag some highlight clips if I can. On another note. myself being 5'6, I could not tell a difference in height between Kern and Fletcher. They are both stupid tall and lanky. Seemed to be generally goofy and lighthearted dudes too.

Nicholas Kern getting it done against Davion Bradford and Mehville last night. Finished with 18 points and an uncharacteristic 10/10 from the line. He's tough to stop off the dribble so consistently knocking down free throws would take his game to another level.
Bought my tickets for the Vashon CBC game tonight. Going to stream the Bills while I'm there. While at Vashon buying tickets Fletcher and Kern were both in the lobby. They both looked excited for the game tonight. Anyone else going to be at Grand and Cass tonight to see them play Caleb Love?

His frame does not seem conducive to putting on that much more bulk. He will never be the same type player Jett was but he can in his own right be very good.
Strength and Conditioning coach said Yuri is the pound for pound best athlete on the team and easily made the most impressive jump in the weight room in the pre season. Not sure his ability to be the physical specimen that is Jordair Jett. But looking forward to his career here. Kid seems to want to WORK

The most amazing thing about last night was that it was almost entirely a second half explosion. Perkins actually struggled in the first half. He was 1-5 for 6 points in the first half with two airballs and a couple of blown layups. Yet he finished the game with 33. Perkins has a Hardenesque ability to get to the line and remain engaged offensively until his jumper starts falling. It's more than just talent. He's a really intelligent offensive basketball player.
Agreed. Really happy he worked through his early season struggles.

Lol Perkins was supposed to be our best player since preseason. Yet some of y’all as of last week still didn’t want him to start
Goodwin and Jacobs are the only players who played more minutes than Perkins yesterday. So does it actually matter? He started the second half if I'm not mistaken. He had 33 points in 33 minutes. Ford brought Tay in first hoping it would get him going early. It didn't. Javonte came next and is an absolute microwave. Gets hot QUICK. He has a knack for it. Look at Lou Williams. He thrives off the bench. Obviously theres a reason for Javonte coming off the bench too.

And we're completely leaving out the teams best scorer in Perkins. Crazy. Doubt he's coming off the bench next year.
