1. So we should go 9-4 in non conference. Is Quincy a real game or exhibition? If its real, 10-4. So we need to go about 12-4 in conference and/or win the conference regular season.
2. >The good news is that there are two new places that should >open soon -- not necessarily bars, but new places >nonetheless. The Tuxedo Room is a swanky nightclub and >restaurant opening up in Grand Center in early September; >and Santo Bento is being built just west of Compton on >Olive. And you've also got the Loft Jazz Club (which isn't a >jazz club) in essentially the same building. Is Dante's back to being Dante's again or what is the deal with that building? I remember going there a few times back before it switched, but never really after. It wasn't all that much of a college type crowd if I recall. and pistol, go be pc somewhere else.
3. >Rumor has it that a developer has purchased the Laclede >Street Bar & Grill (formerly known as Caleco's) and the old >BBC building and has plans to demolish both in favor of some >sort of new development. > >This is not good news. SLU needs more bars nearby, not >less. Pretty soon, Humphrey's will be the only bar left. >Joe Boccardi's and Vito's are nice to have in the >neighborhood, but they're not full-fledged bars. Agreed. The problem comes is that BiondiSLU has all/most of the votes on liquor licensing. They kept Boccardi's from being more of a bar type atmosphere. They will do the same to anyone else. At least we have the Pasta House....oh wait...Quotations..oh wait..
4. >Where is the money going? > >Tuition at SLU has at least tripled in the past 15 years, >but the salaries of the faculty has not kept up with that >pace. Is the student/teacher ratio down? According to Dr. >B it isn't. Is there extra non-teaching staff that has been >added? > Well I know for sure it isn't going to add more business school faculty...
5. >- if >something were to happen to Fr. Biondi, who would replace >him? Maybe I've just been spending too much time on this >board, and now I speculate about everything. my nomination is Justin Johnson
6. >Bonner and Mel Robinson both played in the NBA. Both made >you guys proud too. Thats it? "Multiple players" turns into... Bonner and Mel Robinson? Did Melvin Robinson ever participate in an NBA game? I know he had a few training camp looks, but I am not sure if he ever got a uniform with his name on it. >The auditor >ruled that he was not guilty. No, the initial audit couldnt decipher his "bookkeeping". The independent firm found... --------------------------------------- Other findings include: Floyd Irons failed to make full and accurate disclosures and passed off blame to subordinates. In one instance, Irons told Linda McKnight that an expense report for a basketball players' reception, dated December 2003, was authorized by Dorothy Ludgood — deceased nine months by that time. Vashon principals Ludgood and Irons,
without school-board authorization
, purchased a $50,000 scoreboard, $106,002 worth of athletic uniforms, a $6,995 piano and a $5,994 gymnasium floor. Demetrious Johnson, a former professional football player and confidant of Irons, organized a Super Bowl party and fundraiser for the basketball team at the Adam's Mark Hotel. Johnson did not get district approval, nor did he turn over the event's proceeds to the school. Irons never asked permission to host the fundraiser, as required by district policy. Nike has a contract with Floyd Irons to provide uniforms and equipment to the boys' basketball team, but Vashon made its own "significant similar purchases" of apparel and equipment in 2003 and 2004, according to the audit. ("The last time we had new uniforms through the school was 2000 or 2001," Irons says. "We've gotten new uniforms since then, but not through the school." Irons adds that he purchased the uniforms: "I came up with the money.") Auditors reported dozens of "questionable expenses," including CD players, radios and TVs used as Christmas presents. Jeannette Franks, Vashon's bookkeeper, issued $8,000 in travel advances without ever collecting receipts after the trips. Some of the money funded basketball travel. Irons told auditors he lost receipts in the process of moving his office. Inspectors found no paperwork proving that cash proceeds from ticket sales for non-league basketball games and other events were ever deposited. ------http://www.riverfronttimes.com/Issues/2005-11-16/news/news.html But I guess that's not guilty. Hey, whatever. Guy is a crook. Hope he enjoyed that loss that Peoria Notre Dame hung on him.

9. >These off court issues that several people have mentioned on >this board (beating up fellow classmates, both male and >female) have never been proven. I doubt if there is any >truth to them. However, they are being talked about as if >they are fact. These are all rumors. Mayo was never charged >or arrested for anything. Yeah getting expelled for a school is a daily occurence..
10. , >and all the beautiful girls he can handle. Or all the beautiful women he can beat up.
11. >Wrong since Bush has got into office, it is now illegal to >receive a scholarship based on race. His proposal said that >it discriminated against whites. Maybe at the federal level, but not at the school level. St Louis University has programs designed for the minorities in mind. Now in need whites can apply to. Whats so wrong with that? There are plenty of black/white that are paying full tuition at SLU, and there are plenty of both that are on some sort of aid. Needy people on every end of the color rainbow should be afforded the same opportunities. The supreme court also ruled against the U of Michigan undergrad that race can only be a tiebreaking issue between applicants, not a main factor. That goes along the same lines as this. Also, a large amount of minority programs like that were at the level of the NAACP, ACLU, UNCF, etc. Those programs still exist.
12. >the student loan thing doesnt affect me as I'm on >scholarship, but it will affect many starting this fall. >July 1st was the last day to consolidate the loans. Yet again, your facts of this entire post are way way way off base. 1. Student loan interest rates are based on the interest rate set by the fed. While these rates have stayed pretty level as the prime rate has goneup, they cannot do so anymore. (bush was the one responsible for keeping it at the steady rate for so long) The rate is going from around 4.5% to somewhere in the mid 6 range. 2. Consolidation after July 1st just means you wouldn't lock in the rate of around 4.5%. Anyone can consolidate loans at anytime. 3. You claim Bush cut minority loan opportunities? That is just ignorant. Since Bush has taken office, he has increased funding for higher education across the board. Heres just a lil snipet... "President Bush's 2005 budget request includes $419 million--an $18.8 million or 4.7 percent increase--to assist higher education institutions with a large proportion of minority and disadvantaged students, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Historically Black Graduate Institutions. The president also has proposed $96 million--a $1.9 million increase--to maintain support for institutions that serve large percentages of Hispanic students; $104 million to develop expertise in foreign languages and international studies, which will help meet the nation's security and economic needs; and $833 million for additional educational outreach and support services to disadvantaged students. " 4. Student loans should be carefully thought out. If you plan on going to a school like SLU, paying 100% of it through loans (no scholarships, which is rare at SLU), and majoring in something like social work; you should really go somewhere else. One would come out of SLU 100k+ in debt under that scenario. You think someone majoring in social work is going to have enough to pay that back?
13. >Congrats to former St. Louis U. basketball player Justin >Love and his wife, SLU grad Kate Walter, who were married at >St. Francis Xavier College Church on Friday. Former Billiken >Carlos Sharlow was a member of the wedding party. > >Congrats to Justin but who was Carlso Sharlow? Ya know, some people marry out of neccessity...and some people are kinda in love. But these two, they are Justin Love.
14. >If I read in the >newspaper that someone had said he called and apologized to >me yet I had never received such a call you'd damn well >better believe I'd call that person a liar. It turned out >later that the paper misquoted Ozzie but how was Duncan to >know that? Well the thing was that Dave Duncan prefaced everything he said by "I never lie." That's the funny part. And then he and Larussa take this holy roler thats not part of the game approach. Gimme a break. I like Ozzie, but he does like to put his foot in his mouth quite a bit. Just another example of winning > everything
15. I don't know if you know this, but Dave Duncan has never told a lie. In his entire life! Amazing I know. Duncan needs to worry more about his staffinshambles rotation and leave Ozzie Guillen alone. I did find it pretty funny that they waited for the 2nd batter of that inning who just happened to be the pitching coach's son. What irony.
16. I can't remember any post >about Gardner's NBA prospects, because we could give one >flying f... . Damn, I'd like to play them every year. That could be the world's thinest book. That or How to build a Big12 Champ by the Missouri Athletic Department. Ya know, Mizzou has never had a big12 champ in any sport? Kinda weird.
17. >Bradely has most of the talent out of Peoria on lock down. >This is because most of their coaching staff is from the >city. Chuck Bischer is the assistant coach and coached at >peoria high for 30 years! He coached Somerville and Ruffin >in high school, maybe this is why they all stay in town. Buescher wasn't an assistant when Sommerville and Ruffin committed. Eric was, but not Chuck. Nonetheless, Ruffin wasnt a big recruit because of qualifying issues. Sommerville went Iowa>SWIC>Bradley. Jim Les is 90% of the reason for the success of that program. > >It is safe to say that we are swimming upstream trying to >recruit in Peoria at this point, so let's not act like every >top player out of that city is going to end up a Billiken. Well, Edmonds is a legit possibility. With Illinois employing more of a national recruiting strategy than everbefore, they might overlook some of the second tier players in Peoria. Bradley has strong ties in Minnesota, Chicago, and the JuCo circuit, so they don't neccessarily have the room for all Peoria area players. Many players who fly under the radar might be a good pickup. We can recruit a bit differently now that we aren't competing with the horses in CUSA. Bruce Weber never saw Jamar Smith(Peoria Richwoods) play before he offered him a scholarship, which he accepted as a junior. Theres a ballsy move that paid off. Think about that for a second...
18. >He's also been able to >recruit Peoria better landing Daniel Ruffin from a school >that's mentioned on hear a lot Peoria Notre Dame because >they beat Vashon this past season. Ruffin averaged 8 ppg >this year starting every game for the Braves as a freshman. >Somerville is also a Peoria native. Well Ruffin wasn't from Peoria Notre Dame. He was from Peoria High, in the same backcourt with Shaun Livingston. On a related note, there are 2 guys from those back to back state champ teams that are in the Juco circuit. Deandre Miranda and Brandon Lee. Miranda being a 6-8ish C/PF type who couldn't qualify at the University of Phoenix Online out of high school. He is somewhere in Florida. Lee is a big guard who went to Northwestern and got in a bit of...trouble. He is back at ICC in Peoria where they look to have a pretty solid team for next year. Also keeping with the Peoria theme, it was mentioned on here that Josh Edmonds from Peoria Notre Dame had made a visit to campus back in May? He may be a solid pickup. The reason Bradley recruits Peoria better is because Bradley is actually in Peoria. Crazy, huh?
19. >Oh yeah, because Bradley's going to be the answer when it >comes to intense rivalries. Once the SLU students found out >we'd be playing Bradley, there would be lines to the ticket >office forming weeks in advance. The Savvis Center would >sell out, there would be rioting in the streets, and the >media would be swarming. SLU-Bradley would replace Duke-UNC >as the most famous rivalry in college basketball. Dick >Vitale would finally keel over and die from excitement. > Why couldnt it be? It used to be. Bradley is a team that is building up a helluva program again. SLU is doing the same. Believe it or not, Duke-UNC wasn't always that special until they both started winning. The intensity of rivalries is constantly up and down. There are plenty of rivalries that are huge that don't have to be Duke-UNC. You seem to forget this once was a heated rival back in the old MVC days. >Mizzou may have a lot of indifference toward SLU, but the >fact that there is even an argument made for BRADLEY is >staggering to me. I think we would all like to play Mizzou >every year, and people on this board seem fine with settling >on a Valley team that has had one winning season in the last >several years. Instead of coming up with alternatives, push >for Mizzou. I am not saying we shouldn't play Mizzou. I just don't think it's that important. I think it is more important to branch out, get some midwestern exposure, and have some intense rivalries. Depaul, Bradley, Marquette, SIU, MoSt, and maybe a Creighton/Wichita State/UNI type thrown in there would be some options. Instead, we are playing teams like Kennesaw State and Chicago State. Another thing to consider is the alumni bases in the cities. There are many alums in Chicago, Milwaukee, Omaha, Peoria, etc. You also discount the Valley too easily. The Valley teams are and have been solid for the past 3-4 years. This wasn't a flash in the pan. The reality of the situation is that the Valley teams would be settling on us. Would you have rather had Bradley or Mizzou on the schedule this past year?
20. >Was Mizzou-SLU one sided for those 3 years (1999, 2000, >2001)? SLU took the first by two points, Mizzou won by a >point, and then hit a buzzer beater to win by two. That's >the farthest from lopsided you could possibly be. Mizzou >had a terrible record last year and is rebuilding. SLU is >perpetually in a state of building. I don't see how this is >so uneven. > Sigh...youre not following me. The 1 sided comment was about the intensity of the rivalry, as previously discussed. If it was 1 sided in the W column, it'd be one sided in our favor, because Mizzou is horrible.
21. >JMM, Why does the rival have to be a mirror image of us? >Duke and UNC are nothing alike. XU and Cincy are nothing >alike. Marquette and Wisconsin are nothing alike. Gonzaga >and Washington are nothing alike. I could go on, but the >argument that the schools need to fit the same demographic >is awful. And being close helps, but that isn't the best >reason either. Columbia is closer than Peoria anyway. > The thing that Duke/UNC and XU/Cincy have in common are that they are within 15 minutes of each other/in the same city. Being close is a main reason for many rivalries. No one is arguing that Mizzou wouldn't be a good game, but itd be a very 1 sided rivalry. Bradley/SLU have a long history of hate. The reality is that a good part of both fanbases remember some great games between SLU and Bradley. While you or I may not, I'm sure a lot on this board do. > >Comparing the Big 12 and the Valley is ludicrous. This past >year was your best chance for that argument, and a season >like it won't happen again. On a day in and day out basis, >the Big 12 is leaps and bounds above the Valley, and I am >not even a fan of the Big 12. That was a joke. However, they did have more teams in the sweet 16 this year than the Big12 and just as many teams in the field.
22. >if anyone is a rival? > >i fail to understand this need. It helps generate interest in a program through attendance and media coverage. It's a great part of any sport. Why do the Cardinals sell out when the Cubs come to town? Why does Mizzou sell out when KU comes to town? Obviously for most of the people here, we're interested in the program regardless. Rivalry games get more student support, public support, and distant-alumni attention. Plus, in 9-21 seasons, at least we can say "hey at least we beat team X".
23. >Why Bradley? Who cares if that was our rival 30 years ago? >There are plenty of schools nearby where basketball is the >money sport. Bradley isn't in our conference or our state. >Bradley should have a rivalry with Illinois St. going. They >are barely 30 minutes away from each other. > Plenty of schools nearby? Peoria is 2 hours away. Name a school that is closer and of this size that is as similar to SLU. Please do. Cause you cant. >Finally, rivalries DO NOT have to be exclusive of one >another. Sure, Mizzou has good ones with Illinois and KU, >Xavier has Cincy, and Dayton and Xavier have each other. >Why can't another meaningful game be allowed? Mizzou may be >more excited for KU every year, but the in-state rivalries >can't be tossed aside. A rivalry is 2 sided. Mizzou fans hate KU and KU fans hate Mizzou. I doubt many Mizzou fans hate SLU, besides the guys on this board. While we may hate the Temple team, they could probably give a ###### about us. Plus, why would we want to play the bottom half of the notsoBig12?
24. >I am a Bloomington native as well, and I agree that Bradley >is very very similar to SLu and would make a lot of sense, >however they are so caught on the ISU-BU thing. The war on >74 is more intense than ever. > Hehe thats funny. ISU is pathetically bad, and that rivalry has lost a lot of its luster. It will pick up on the ISU side this year because of Bradleys sweet 16 run. I've been harping this for a year now.
PLAY BRADLEY.
It's like two mirrored schools. Neither one has a really big rivalry, neither plays football, both are in mid major conferences, and so on. I don't know why we can't get something done with Bradley. I know Les is trying to get more home and homes with Chicago schools so to help recruiting in the Chicago area. Their Depaul series probably wont last too long after Bradley went up to Chicago and wacked them without OBryant last year. I would think they have a few open dates on the schedule left. I would assume both coaches would be in favor, and maybe Brad should give a ring up to Coach Les to see what can get done.
25. > >Read more carefully. I am wondering why anyone thinks OI >will get more minutes. On what basis can we hope that Obi >will get quality minutes this year? > >Anyway we are speculating about what we hope to see. I >fervently hope JJ gets a lot more minutes than OI, and I >think that hope has a closer relation to reality than other >options. Why is it that you are so high on Justin Johnson? The guy has shown absolutely nothing. Nothing. Nothing. He has had 2? decent games in 3 years of playing and 4 years in the system. I'd rather cut ties with him and let some fresh blood get some minutes. I would rather see Ian playing the 4 and Bryce at the 5 for the majority of the minutes. I'd have Knollmeyer and Obi backing up both spots, provided they are both in playing shape. Let JJ ride the pine for another year and get his MBA or whatever hes going after.
