  1. RM, and Kevin Oneil, Cuonzo Martin, Jay Spoonhauer all names they brought up
  2. former disk jockey probably never wrote his own stuff before-if we had a PR department they could be filling the airwaves; BM suggested we get the big boys FH instead of sending over our interns that he must torture
  3. Dayton Detroit San Francisco Dons we used to play them and a Denver team quite often? I don't know how they have done lately
  4. we steal the best Church derived teams around the country-who could we get that is unhappy with their current league?
  5. who would you drop? I would only drop teams of lower academic standing as well as support for basketball; Do you agree we would benefit by putting Bradley and Creighton on our schedule if not in our league?
  6. With 31 games: play each time only once befor the tournament and switch home court advantages like we do with SIUC and MOState East Fordham George Washington La Salle UMass Richmond Rhode Island St. Bonaventure St. Joseph West Temple Xavier Dayton SLU Bradley Creighton Duquesne Charlotte
  7. how about if Creighton, Drake, and Bradley join the A10? these are reasonably large cities and each has medical schools, graduate programs, and populations that could produce good rivalries and synergism for the faculty and student body and decent basketball with City Schools being the thread that makes them compatible
  8. Constant proddings to join the valley and insinuations that SLU is going to lose Shimmy, CL, etc are as bad as the stale posts about Biondi needing to wash his linen in the Post. The man has been President of SLU for 20 years and accomplished quite a bit without having to pay attentioin to the whining of BM. When there is news there will be a press release and whoever is supposed to cover it from the Post or the radio and TV stations will show up. Being in a conference has to do with many minor sports and many academic liasons; not just basketball. Thanks be that we don't consider soccer our major sport just look at the leakage of local players on scholarship to North Carolina, Indiana, Purdue, Creighton, etc.Our soccer coach is not expected to hold every good highshooler in the area: Saint Louis has been the major metro for soccer for years. Nothing excludes us from being a top 64 program in men, women's basketball and voleyball if SLU has money from supporters. Buy a brick. it is time to upgrade your rankings in the Billiken Club
  9. We have been to the Valley when it was a lot more dynamic than it is today; yeah, I can see RM pining for the best seat on the bus to N. Iowa , Evansville, Springfield instead of flying into NY, Philly, Pittsburgh. Yeah Duquesne and some of the others have tough attendance and facilities problems; but X, SLU, Dayton alone average more than anyone in the Valley and it will be better in our new areana. The only reason I could go for this is if the Valley said okay the Tournament is permanently in the Chaifetz which is the kind of ##### we had to put up with in Conference USA with Memphis, Louisville, and Cincy always getting the homecourt advantage. Are the other teams in the Valley that desparate for us to join that they would do that? SIUC and Creighton and Bradley would be nice teams on our schedule but that is about as far as it goes; we don't need to play rest of the teams in the Valley. We certainly do not need to go back to a level of play where you don't need real centers or can get by with Spoon type junkyard dogs for guards that are 5' 10: Let us take our chance at bigger and better players. We don;t need to water things down so we can compete immediately in the Valleyy and I would agree they have 4 good teams most years and they are tough competition at the top, I would rather beat GW, X, UMass, Dayton, Charlotte, Rhode Island most years
  10. future; can you imagine what the two Soderbergs could do for SIUE, for example?
  11. do we them have an extra scholarship or do you just lose one? Majerus will get better walk-ons than some of our bench. Is MG still unsigned?
  12. my guess is BM will have plenty to complain about with the Cards hardly better than last year's 83 game winners; he will have to really swallow hard to say anything good about the new arena in town; maybe he can lead the way for the city to revitalize the Keil Opera House since he sees himself as such a prime mover and we just see him as more BM
  13. reputation for being able to maintain their order without falling prey to the diocesan hierarchy that gives alliegance to the bishops and the pope. Archbishop Burke had his hand out wanting part of the money from the sale of the hospital. It is that type of pressure that warrants use of legal protections of not for profit corporations and a lay board. The Jesuits have sometimes asserted themselves in maintaining the disctinctness of their order even in opposition to the pope. Although they have never gone as far as becoming a schismatic religious order.
  14. If you grew up on the Eside like I did SLU and Brad were doing the best they had done in years; Mitchell and Relphorde are from Illinois-so are Lisch, Liddell, and Dusin Maquire from the metro east as well; tell me a time in SLU history that 4 players were from across the bridge? 5 if you count Chicago kids-where have you been?
  15. I checked Biondi was inaugurated in 1987; those were the official biography words. Google him it seems raising the average ACT scores from 22.7 average when he started to 26 plus is important as well as all of the kids who get financial aid from scholarship money donated to the school:Financing a Saint Louis University education. * 95 percent of first-time freshmen were awarded financial aid assistance in 2005-2006. * More than $30.3 million in financial aid was awarded to first-time freshmen in 2005-2006. Of this total, $17 million was awarded in the form of scholarship or grant assistance. * Saint Louis University scholarship programs are awarded based on academic merit, talents, service, leadership and financial need. * The average financial aid package for a 2005-2006 first-time freshman totaled $19,759. 2005-2006 Freshman Scholarships and Financial Aid Saint Louis University Scholarships $ 10,722,398 35% Saint Louis University Grants $ 6,338,735 21% Federal/State/Private Scholarships/Grants $ 2,701,409 9% Federal/SLU Work Study $ 538,371 2% Federal/Private Loans $ 9,987,655 33%
  16. Biondi started about 87; I'll look it up Reinart if I have the spelling wall President forever and great at raising money but he loved to hoard it instead of spending it on staff, grounds, or buildings; he closed the Fine Arts School about 1967 and tore the bulding down and replaced it with the grassy knoll where there are some modern art sculptures
  17. Fran Fraschilla Biography After spending 23 years coaching mens college basketball Fran Fraschilla took on a new gig in 2002 when he joined ESPN as a broadcast analyst. Fraschilla brings a considerable amount of basketball coaching experience to his new position as a basketball analyst for ESPN. Fraschilla's coaching odyssey began at New York Tech where he spent a season, followed by Rhode Island, Ohio and Ohio State for a collective total of ten years. He then moved on to Providence as an assistant for 13 seasons before going to Manhattan in his first head coaching job. While at Manhattan Fraschilla's Jaspers teams compiled a 85-35 record (.708) includinga 26-6 record for the 1994-95' season which saw his team go to the NCAA Tournament where they upset Oklahoma in the first round. For his efforts Franschilla was named the NABC coach of the year. During his Manhattan tenure Fraschilla led his team to post season tournament play each year, going to the NCAA tournament twice and the NIT tournament twice. Fraschilla moved on to St. John's, whose basketball fortunes had dramatically declined since the retirement of the revered Lou Carnesseca. In two seasons at St. John's his Red Storm teams had a winning record of 35-24 including going 22-10 in his second season there. The Red Storm went to the NCAA postseason tournament in 98'. Fraschilla's St. John's teams owned a 21-15 record in Big East play and enjoyed a 12-6 advantage playing on the road. In a stunning upset the Red Storm ended U. Conn's 46-game home court winning streak in 1998 and went on to a second place finish in the Big East. Fraschilla was named the mens head basketball coach at the University of New Mexico in March of 1999. He came to the Lobos with a career coaching record of 120-59 (.670) and was the 17th coach to lead the UNM Lobos basketball program. At the end of his three years at the UNM helm Fraschilla's record stood at 55-41 (.571). He led the Lobos to three consecutive NIT appearances. Fraschilla said at the time: "I'm thrilled about being a part of a great basketball tradition that the University of New Mexico offers. I look forward to moving New Mexico basketball into the 21st century and coaching in the nation's best home-court environment." Upon introducing Fraschilla UNM AD Rudy Davalos said: "We are very excited to have Fran Fraschilla lead the men's basketball program at the University of New Mexico. He did an outstanding job at Manhattan College and St. John's. Fran took over a struggling program at St. John's and turned it into a 20-game winner and an NCAA Tournament team. Fran is considered one of the finest recruiters in college basketball." Upon departing the University of New Mexico Fraschilla's career coaching record stood at 175-100 (.636). As of October, 2004, Fraschilla is immersed in his analysts job at ESPN where he wears a variety of hats. There have been some rumors mentioning his name for a return to the coaching wars but at this time nothing has come along which would cause Fraschilla to leave ESPN. Some of his accomplishments are: * 23 year mens NCAA College Basketball Coaching career * Career coaching record of 175-100 (.636) * Several NCAA postseason tournament appearances * Several NIT postseason tournament appearances * Fraschilla's Manhattan Jaspers teams compiled a 85-35 record (.708) * Named the NABC coach of the year for the 1994-95 season * Fraschilla's St. John's Red Storm team ended U. Conn's 46-game home court winning streak * Led the New Mexico University Lobos to three consecutive NIT appearances * Critically acclaimed basketball analyst for ESPN
  18. last time we had this much national exposure it was because of the wlwlwlwlwlwlwlwlw streak
  19. outside consultants gather facts, state the market conditions, help both sides bring the deal together; negotiate, it is a furhter tool for letting the other side know that any point is negotiable. We had the committee hire last time-who takes credit for getting us a Big Ten assistant from a final 4 team who actually had play calling experience; these were great credentials and we saved a little money; okay now it is time to step up and play big casino-oops don't bet on college games we don't want any refs making sure both sides have 9 fouls per half and keeping the scores low.
  20. win loss percentage John Bennington and then spoon were our best coaches; after many years JB left to MSU where he continued his winning ways and our program went through years of fair to middlin success before falling further and then being reinvigorated by Grawer and the university president at the time was-Biondi
  21. Craig Upchurch actually took a summer class or two to see if he was a fit; he was Grawer's recruit not Romar's-he was the 3-4 player for the big chill,Mel Robinson, to play in-out with. Mel tried to get CU to pick it up academically when they were in high school; I stood in line with them at the fired chicken place near Vashon and listened to their conversations. Mel got it and he got in. CU was not going to compete academically and the school would not admit him-I believe Grawer made the contact for him at Houston. Today, SLU has a median ACT of nearly 28 about 30% of the student body gets some kind of academic aid. You might be eligible to get in some school with a 17 or 18 but Jeremy Biles, Pullen and Horace dixon just get your hopes up for no reason. Soderberg didn't give HD minutes when he needed him because of the effect it would have had on the team when he left; you are taking English, history and other basic required core subjects for the first two years and you have to step it up from what you did in high school; it is great that TL could go to prep school and compete but not all kids can make that leap. SLU owns a hotel on Grand near the med school and now an arena-they could start an internation hotel/tourism management program; they could also start an extension of the physical therapy/nursing programs to include P.E, type interests but surely we do not want to water down our degrees to let inferior students wander about the campus; they might get in trouble and emarrass everyone. That being said we did start a pottery major for Chris Henrich, didn't we? So maybe we could stick some athletes in the "communications major" area that seem to be popular now a days. If you can talk out loud you get a grade? But can you pass philosophy? Theology-you used to be able to take marriage and comparative religions and the old testament-if you have gone to church for 12 or more years that probably is the basis for a c grade or more--if you study it like a history course you could do better-possibly we could hide people in a jounalism-sports writer type program-people like BM and Rene' must have had some college
  22. It would be stupid for Cheryl or anyone else connected with SLU to leave in the midst of a major upgrade; we did not hear such trife with the firing of Jill P. and the hiring of Shimmy. By the way one question to Shimmy's invitation to come to games brought an onslaught of email contacts. Made me think she had a better understanding of how to include the average Billiken booster than the staff serving BS-little things like that and pretty soon you have an avalanche in men's basketball-this was not done for no reason-it takes a major rethinking to put on a class show; if we are going to own our own venue we can't think like 2nd or 3rd class renters anymore. CL is going to have to step it up to make the new men's basketball coach happy-my guess is she will welcome the challenge and all those trying to whittle away at the SLU program will have to get on the SIUE message board
  23. our thoughts together, we may soon have a head coach that has as much heart and integrity as Brad Soderberg; he was personable on a one to one basis and cared so much. Our new head coach will have to have that and more to bring SLU to the next level. Brad and SLU were really getting it done with the local players; however, our next coach may get the support of the media like BM who only back the winners-they never believe in any one like we believed in Brad. Stay with the program and you will be remembered well in your hometown-a fellow ESIDER and SLU alum
