  1. The A-10 is getting ready to have two at-large teams for the third consecutive years. No other non-BCS league has been able to do that. 2005-07 were down years for the leauge and they still got an at-large bid. Even at the league's darkest hour, the A-10 has never been relegated to one bid with 25 and 26-victory teams having no shot at the NCAA. It wasn't that long ago that we had two elite eight teams and the No. 1 team in the country. There was an Elite eight team just two years ago. BTW. The first team A-10 team has no seniors on it for the first time in league history. Temple, Rich and X will be loaded once again next year, so they will set the pace again with us looking to move up in the mix. Don't expect any drop-off in the league any time soon. bad boyz for life
  2. Foreman beats De LaSalle by eight points in the sectional semifinals. McCall goes for 23 points. Foreman will play Whitney Young for the sectional title on Friday night at Proviso East (I think). Any of our Chi-town Billikens going to the game? Should be a good one. Dwayne's team got bounced out in the regional finals. bad boyz for life
  3. Just heard Earl on Frank Cusumano's show on 590. He said he's having technical problems with his website over the past week. Hopefully, it will be fixed by today. He said, he has several updates written on SLU and high school, but haven't been able to get them up. He said apologized for the issues and hopes his internet guy will have them rectified as soon as possible. bad boyz for life
  4. Some of the Valley schools have been ignoring Doug Elgin's pleas about scheduling and it has caused some friction between the schools and the league office. The biggest culprit has been Ill. State. Jankovich has been a joke with his 300+ non-conf. schedule. some of these guys are just trying to pile up wins and that's sad. It has made the Valley nothing more than a one-bid league despite the presence of some quality teams. It's partially true that BCS schools aren't interested in home-and-homes with the Valley, but some of the other programs have gone out of their way to scheduel down. Wich. State should be a tournament team, but a 284 schedule stretch is ridiculous. The A-10 got a lot of swag this year, not only for scheduling many of these games, but winning a lot of them and on the road and on neutral courts and that's what it takes. (Florida twice, Missouri, Louisville, Seton Hall, Mississippi State were road or neutral site wins for the league). We're going to experience this in the future now more than ever. Who in the hell in their right mind is going to schedule Rick Majerus to a home and home. X and Temple do not have this problem because they have been good for so long that they are "major" programs. bad boyz for life
  5. limping? We entered our most brutal seven game stretch of the season, starting with the home game against dayton. so far, we are 4-2 in that stretch and the two losses are against the top two teams in the league in hotly contested games. relax people. We're getting every ounce we can from this group of nine kids and they have performed well in this rough part of the schedule. bad boyz for life
  6. McLemore is indeed 6'5". He was 6'3" as a freshman. I'm about 6'3" and he stands all over me. the Biedschied kid is pretty tall as well.
  7. Barring a collapse (lose last two and first tourney game), we're in the NIT right now. We're in fourth place in the best league outside of the BCS schools (better than the Pac-10 I may add). Let's just get this bye and try to win the tournament. bad boyz for life
  8. If he wants to see the "culture" at SLU, let his team be 7-6 and in sixth or seventh place in the A-10 at this time next year in league play when everyone will be picking us to be near the top. I doubt that the Billiken faithful will be so accepting. All you have to do is look at 2007 when we won 20 and we were all up in arms because we failed to live up to expectations. bad boyz for life
  9. If we are going to complain about Willie's free throw shooting, don't you think we should take Cody to task for grabbing only two rebounds tonight. I liked his 19 points, but he was manhandled under their by xaviers bigs. Willie was the only one who could get a rebound out there tonight. I wished he made the free throws, but willie performed like a warrior tonight. bad boyz for life
  10. Earl also said that Dr. Chaifetz is our version of Mark Cuban. I love it! bad boyz for life
  11. On Earl Austin's website, he is calling for Bills fans to sell out the games for the rest of the season. He was also calling for sellouts at the end of their broadcast after the St. Joe's game. I'm bringing four people to the next five home games. I told them not to accept my tickets unless they were ready to get really loud. I'm ready. bad boyz for life
  12. Conklin has a number of injuries, with the latest being an Achilles injury. CE and JJ are both sick. Femi is out as we all know and CS has a broken J and no confidence. We are down to nine players and we are really banged up. A nice win at home is needed badly because another long trip to PA is at hand.
  13. The last time I checked, the USA kicked the world in the backside, but good in Vegas and the qualifying tournament in Vegas and the Olympics in China. The only close game I remember was the gold medal game against China. All of the other games, the world was nothing but roadkill for the Americans. Before 2008, we had a serious problem. But, Jerry Colangelo seemed to solve that problem two years.
  14. You must be a very young Billiken fan or have a very short memory. Ian Vouyoukas used to dunk with regularity. Two of the best dunks in recent Billiken memory were when Luke Meyer dunked on 6-9 Ahmad Nivins and 6-8 Rob Ferguson of St. Joes on national t.v. and when Chris Sloan posterized Channing Frye of Arizona at the Kiel Center.
  15. Got 24 against the No. 1 team and followed up with 17 and 7 against BU. a 6'7" 220-pound athletic small forward. If given the chance to do it again, RM would still take Kyle Cassity over Relphorde. Go figure.
  16. they made the elite eight a few years back with a "four guard" offense with Foye being the biggest of the four at 6'3" U.Conn won a national title with a backcourt of Ricky Moore at 6'1" and El-Amin at 5'10" BC nearly made a Final Four with John Bagley 5'11" and Michael Adams, who was about 5'8" I remember seeing them here in St. Louis years ago. UNLV wasn't too bad either with 6'0" Greg Anthony and 6'1" Anderson Hunt in the backcourt. I believe they won something like 46 straight games. Of course, we all remember N.C. State's Valvano team that won the whole thing with Lowe and Wittenburg, who were both 6 feet tall. The list of teams that win in college bball, at all levels, with small guards is almost endless. Spoon used to have the smallest backcourts in college ball, but always seemed to get to the tournament andcreate problems. I remember one year, he had Darryl Reid, who was about 6 feet and Arnold Bernard, who was 5-3. If you have guards who can play, regardless of size, you are going to win a lot of games. Of course, everyone would like to have talented big guards, but as I've pointed out, it isn't always essential.
  17. Villanova does pretty well with small guards. Stokes and Reynolds are pretty good. They even played four of them one year and advanced to the Elite Eight a few years ago.
  18. With that in mind, are we still recruiting the small forward (Clyburn) from Marshalltown J.C. It looks like he's having a big sophomore year. Seems like he might fit the bill of what we need at the small forward spot. Has anyone seem him play? bad boyz for life
  19. Richmond put themselves in a great at-large position with its neutral court wins against Mizzou and Mississippi State and a win over Florida in the state of Florida. That's huge. But they have to make those wins stand up by finishing in the top three in the league, which will be hard. No lower than fourth. and make some noise in the conference tourney. Say, if they lose to us at Chaifetz, the committee will see it as a bad loss despite the fact that we are tough to beat at home. A team like Richmond will get penalized for that, which is unfortunate. Temple is in the same boat with its road win at Seton Hall, plus wins of Villanova, Penn State and Siena. However, Dunphy seems to have them peaked at the Conference tourney. Xavier has played its usual nonconference slate, but they have struggled in losing to Marquette, Kansas State (very good team) as well as the robbery in Indy last weekend. Losing Brown early has really hurt them. They really have to do well in the league this year and I have no doubt that they will. X's track record is definitely in their favor. I'd be surprised if Dayton doesn't finish either first or second in the league. URI is also doing quite well despite losing Baron and Seawright. LaSalle is talented, but no point guard. Everything else is in place, but their lack of a floor leader makes them real vunerable. But, boy do they have talent and size. It will be interesting to watch from here on out.
  20. As I said, I'm sorry if I offended anyone on the board. But I read a lot of blogs and there are always mistakes. I think it's because of the informal nature. Nobody is trying to win a Pulitzer Prize or anything. I read lots of newspapers that have mistakes. I just found it interesting that the clown in question found the need to slam an African-American paper that has won a slew of journalism awards over the years. Even when I moved from St. Louis and lived in other parts of the country, I always managed to read it, either by subscription or on line. That's all. I'm through with this subject now and I've said my peace on it. Unless someone returns with a weak rebuttal, which I'm sure will come. Now, it's back to Billiken basketball.
  21. I've read Earl's books and his articles all the time. It's obvious to me that he writes the blog to have fun and keep Billiken fans informed with his takes on the game. He's got a pretty keen insight on what he thinks might happen in the game. Before the Belmont game, he thought it was Brian Conklin's night to step up and have a big night. I don't know why he singled out Brian, but BC ended up with 13 points and nine rebounds. In his pre-game post for the MSU game, he thought we might go to some kind of junk defense, so I watched the game and looked for it. In the first half, we went to a box-and-one on Leonard and we got ourselves back into the game. I immediately thought of his pre-game report. That's why I read it. Every game he provides a few nuggets of info of what to look for and it usually comes to pass. slulaw, if you say you cannot follow it, it's obvious that you know very little about basketball because his reports provide a lot of valuable insight on the game itself. I also like his reports on the high school kids and all of the other athletes in st. louis who are playing around the country. We know you read the blog all the time and your just coming on here to flame. That's what classless buffoons do on these message boards. The fact that you are taking cheap shots at the local African-American paper tells me a lot about your attitudes. Maybe you should change you moniker to slulimbaugh09. That seems to fit you nicely. sorry to the rest of the posters on this board, but when someone comes on here acting like a total ass and has nothing to offer to billikens.com except some lame, punk-ass flaming, he's going to get called out. bad boyz for life
  22. I bet slulaw reads the blog every day. he's not fooling anybody. bad boyz for life
  23. It wasn't that long ago that the A-10 had four and a few instances, five teams make the big dance. If I recall in 2004, both SJ and X made the Elite 8 and Temple and Richmond were also in the tournament. Richmond was good with Belein, but they had the misfortune of playing wisconsin in Milwaukee in the first round. the league was down for a few years, a few years ago, but it is an impressive league. bad boyz for life
  24. Not only did Temple whip No. 3 Villanova today, but Rhode Island is beating Boston College by double-digits on the road. X is leading Cincinnati by 10 in the second half. I know coach RM is not happy with the A-10 and wants to go to the MVC. Maybe, if he would stop whining about the league and quit trying to run away from the athletes and competition of the A-10 and pining to get into a one-bid league, we might make a better conference showing in the future. Just my two cents worth. bad boyz for life
