  1. Partly Cloudy skies and a high of 48 predicted for Saturday and Mardi Gras...you'd think folks could go to the parade 1st (thats what I plan on doing) and make it over for a 3 pm game...but we know that won't happen. Lots of fair-weather SLU fans (not just students).
  2. If you don't want to read Burwell's article.. here is the end...and yes, Majerus kills it. That's probably why Majerus is worried that even as his streaking Billikens head into Saturday's 3 p.m. game against Fordham on a five-game winning streak, the students will choose to indulge in Mardi Gras parties off campus instead of coming to Chaifetz to see a Rams team that is 9-14 overall and sits in 13th place in the 14-team league. "You can come here (first) then go to Mardi Gras the rest of the night," Majerus pleaded. "So we really have to get the students (to come to the game). I mean how early can you Mardi Gras?" A student reporter answered the question, and it wasn't exactly what Majerus was hoping to hear. "Seven a.m.," he said. "Wow," Majerus said, laughing. "You don't look like that kind of guy. I bet your parents paid your tuition, huh?" 3. That was the comment about her best player choosing to bake cookies, correct? Shame that we can't have these games in the Chaifetz Pavilion... that seats about 700 right? For the less than 200 who were there on Sunday, it would have been a much better atmosphere than 175 people in a 10,600 seat arena...probably would have even had a sense of an atmosphere
  4. http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/story/17018067/fabled-cameron-crazies-succumbing-to-cameron-monotony-at-duke I remember my first game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and that's saying something. I don't remember what clothes I wore yesterday -- hell, without looking down, I can't remember what's on right now -- but I remember my first look at Cameron. And it was almost 15 years ago. It was December 1997. It was Villanova. And Duke. Duke won, of course. I don't remember how big Duke won, but it was big. That's the only detail from the game I remember. The details from Cameron? Those, I remember. The students chanting mean chants and making silly sound effects. The band playing Devil With a Blue Dress On and Rock Lobster. The crazy towel guy waving his crazy towel. That was my first game at Cameron. It was also my second game at Cameron. And third. Over the years I covered close to 100 games at Cameron, and you know what? That was every game at Cameron. Same chants and silly sound effects. Same songs. Same towel guy. Same. Same. Same. No wonder Duke can't get students to go to the game anymore. (MORE AT THE SITE ABOVE)
  5. As someone who leaves WAY after the final horn every game...what is traffic like after a full house? Does it add an extra 5 minutes to your drive home? I ask this because I can't seem to figure out why people stream to the exits before the end of the game...even a rousing victory or Senior Night doesn't get people to stay. And these are the higher monied tickets. Does leaving with 3 minutes to play actually save that much time?
  6. A Tweet from: ReidLaymance Reid Laymance- St Louis Post Dispatch Sports Editor. Just behind LMU and UNM? RT @tomtimm: Dayton coach Archie Miller said SLU "may be one of the best teams in the nation." (he re-tweeted Tom Timmerman's earlier post from Dayton Coach Archie Miller for those of you who are not Twitter regulars and don't follow the format above.)
  7. I shot the photographer an e-mail on 12/28 noting the misidentified Brian Conklin in the cut line and got a nice e-mail back: Yes. That was my fault as I do the captions...probably during the frenzy before deadline...misreading the roster list. Thank you for the information and please forgive my mistake Cg -- Christian Gooden | Photographer | St. Louis Post-Dispatch
  8. This above quote is something that SLU athletics needs to realize as well. They are that small business and when they screw up the "little things" like they do, people notice.
  9. The Band has a new CD available for a $10 donation. 11. Got this in the e-mail today...thought I'd share. Award Winning College Basketball Doc at Tivoli “The Gray Seasons” showing at SLIFF November 15th ST. LOUIS: Documentary filmmaker Robert T. Herrera brings his emotional tale of the Saint Louis University Lady Billikens to the big screen for the St. Louis International Film Festival. “The Gray Seasons” will be shown at 6:30pm Tuesday, November 15th at the Tivoli. Director Herrera, director of photography David Rocco and Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller will be in attendance for the Q&A following the film. Critics have called this film a “rival to the classic “Hoop Dreams” and a “brutally honest” story that is “touching,” “compelling” and “inspiring.” “The Gray Seasons” focuses on Saint Louis University women’s basketball, a longstanding Division I program with a lack of tradition and success. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds of overcoming the losing culture of the program, Shimmy Gray-Miller, a young, dynamic coach with a personal history of playing and coaching success, is brought in to turn things around. She embarks on her first head-coaching position and is armed with her first class of determined recruits. Driven to change the trajectory of the basketball program, the team sets their sights on success, attempting to pull SLU from its last place conference standings to a conference contender. The film features music composed, produced and performed by Fayetteville resident John Kelley. Kelley is a career fine artist and musician. Kelley and director Herrera have worked on several music projects together over the past decade. Kelley has enjoyed success playing with several bands in the Austin music scene and as a solo artist. He is currently finishing his MFA in drawing/painting at the University of Arkansas. Kelley has written and performed hundreds of songs throughout his career. “The Gray Seasons” won Best Editing-Feature at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase and took an Honorable Mention at the LA Art House Film Festival. In addition to SLFS and LAAHFF, the film has been featured at festivals across the country including San Antonio, Cincinnati, Louisville, Paducah and Fayetteville. This isn’t a film just for athletes…film lovers of all genres will find something to root for in this dramatic cinematic journey. ### http://www.thegrayseasons.com/ http://www.facebook.com/TheGraySeasons
  12. Video interview with Rick he mentions they they are negotiating with Gonzaga and Butler for next season.
  13. 72, I absolutely agree with you. Nashville's point was to comment on Whitesell being "old"..I was just trying to point out that the age of a person doesn't necessarily preclude him from being energetic. Generally I think we're all reacting to this situation a bit much. Very disappointed to see Jensen go at this time of year. I suspect we won't ever get the true story behind that move. I think Rick made a pretty solid move given the time circumstances. BTW..I don't think Crews has officially even been hired yet...still in the hr dept hands last time i checked.
  14. Well, I actually met and spoke with Coach Whitesell at length on the 1st day of the practice sessions for the Canada trip (Essentially HIS 1st day as well). I had a fantastic interaction with him as he seemed incredibly up beat, positive, energetic. During my personal interaction with him, which you have had zero, I found him to be someone who I would think would represent the University well to a potential recruit. After that first day, Whitesell made sure that he acknowledged me on every occasion that I was at practice...again, they type of interaction you would expect from a coach/recruiter. All positives in my opinion...AND energetic. I'm not a recruit, but he paid a bit of attention to me...wonder how that translates on the recruiting trail with someone he's really going after... In your earlier post, you admitted that you " don't know much about SLU's recruiting, but I have a fairly decent understanding of the recruiting game and our situation isn't a good one." Umm..which is it? You claim to not be an expert AND an expert in the same sentence. Your perception about youth seems very out of place since you have apparently not met the man. Oh...and Whitesell is 51. Just to name a few other coaches who are older than Whitesell ( who I assume you think don't have energy in recruiting) John Calipari 52 Tom Izzo 56 Rick Pitino 59 Roy Williams 61
  15. What do you base this perception on? Have you personally spoken to Whitesell to garner that opinion of him?
  16. "invite Navy, Air Force and Boise State into the league as members in football only" I continue to wonder about these "partial member" deals. I know Notre Dame has that set up with the Big East..I would think at some point it would start to rub folks the wrong way. I understand that its all about money, but its certainly an easy way out...instead of improving the conference you're in with that sport, you just jump ship.
  17. Ok...Getting back on topic.... Per Timmerman: Its a 5 year deal in Brooklyn with the A-10 Tournament. 1st Round games at campus sites eliminated...all 12 teams that qualify will be in Brooklyn for tournament Folks in New York would likely be able to watch games at the Big East Tourney and A-10 Tourney at 2 venues on one day. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/basketball/college/article_18fd758a-e9ff-11e0-aca8-001a4bcf6878.html My concern is that this building will seat 18,000 for hoops.... that is a very big venue for this league's tournament. There will be a lot of empty seats me thinks.
  18. Yes...the large steel "curtain" that split the stage with the Opera House on the North end and the Auditorium on the South could be opened and the stage could be "shared" between both buildings. 19. Thought I could update this thread. A tweet from a few minutes ago: PaulBiancardi Paul Biancardi Saint Louis Head Coach Rick Majerus /assistant Al Jensen were watching ESPNU Super 60 Nolan Berry workout this morning at 6:30 am.
  20. Haith will be on KTRS this evening with Vahe Gregorian from the Post and Mike Kelly. 9pm. 550 am and KTRS.com
  21. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/slu/article_96b19b28-bbe3-11df-9e2a-00127992bc8b.html The need to have 18 home games for financial reasons got in the way of another big-name opponent. There was an opportunity for a home-and-home series with Seton Hall of the Big East, but Seton Hall wanted the series to start at their place this season, while SLU needed it to start at Chaifetz. Instead, SLU added Rockhurst. "We'll make a ton of money on the Rockhurst game, rather than playing a Big East team home and home," Majerus said. "I'm a team player, I understand that financially. Hopefully it doesn't come back to haunt us when the NCAA field is picked." Though the game with Chicago State may look like one of those games that's on the schedule to fill it out - Chicago State was 9-23 last season with an RPI of 347 - it's actually the first game of a home-and-home because next season, it's Kwamain Mitchell's homecoming game. Majerus said efforts to get a school in Mitchell's hometown of Milwaukee or one of the bigger schools in Chicago such as DePaul were unsuccessful.
  22. 101's late nite host...Chris Sanders or something.. is not very good. He was on the Rams postgame broacasts last year with Jim Hanifan and is not part of the programming this season. He's an update guy at best. Sanders probably didn't do any work to prepare for this interview, which is a shame because they had Cody on so late...taking up HIS time. THAT is your radio home of the Billikens. Majerus will be on with Frank and Martin today on 590
  23. http://blogs.indystar.com/recruitingcentral/2011/08/21/cathedrals-drew-commits-to-saint-louis/ The Indy Star weighs in: “I felt very comfortable there,” he said. “I know coach Majerus is hard on his players, but I look forward to that. I think it’s an honor to get a chance to play for him. I know it’s very detailed and everything you have to do is right, but that’s the way it is with coach (Andy) Fagan at Cathedral. I think I thrive on that.”
  24. Glaze was at class today so he wasn't at practice. Indications that he will be ok for canada... Conklin was a limited participant..still icing his left hip after an injury on Sunday.
  25. http://sports.yahoo.com/investigations/news?slug=ys-frank_haith_allegations This story includes a "jailhouse" interview with Shapiro talking about the Haith portion of the Miami story.
