  2. Roy...maybe its too early to tell or not, but I think Brad is in the Romar mold of working refs. Other coaches (huggins, pitino, squid calapari) are ALWAYS working the refs whereas it seeme like Brad and in the past zo, held their tounge until they were really ticked off. Perhaps getting on them earlier in the game would have helped. Late i the 2nd half whenn i thought things were slipping away, i mentioned to someone "maybe he needs to get a T called on himself to get the crowd and team back into it". Now i'm generally not a guy who likes to give the other team the ball, but we've all seen how a T can help in some cases. Your thoughts??
  3. Couple of things... 1. Anyone wonder why Darren Clarke didnt get a single minute of action? 2. The preliminary blues schedule had the blues playing at 2 in the afternoon and the 'zona game that evening. I think b/c ESPN 2 wanted the game, SLU worked with Kiel to get the game in the afternoon. Its a tough call....afternoon on nat tv? evening with (possibly) more support. 3. I dont think you will ever get an official answer to your season ticket question. Even when SLU had a base of about 12,000 they wouldnt release figures. That just seems to be their policy.
  4. I've always liked... "Billiken Basketball is Life... the rest is just details."
  5. Wow, our season ticket base is down farther than i thought. I bet we only have about 7,000 or so season tickets sold. Amazing as I can remember to about 4-5 years ago when it was up at about 12,000 or so. Hopefully the local recruits for next season can get that number back up to where it was and should be in a city the size of St Louis.
  6. About 25 students, cheerleaders and band members were stranded after the game. Its another situation where SLU doesnt do the little things right. Those little things add up and this situation may have soured some future student support. SLU is supposed to make these games accessible. I would like to send out thanks to SID Doug Mac for going out of his way to bring students back to campus after the game. Also the several band members who left Humphreys to do the same, Thank you a bunch.
  7. I cant argue your points about GT. They've been on the tube this year and are REALLY impressive. Your comment about quelching the opposing crowd is quite accurate as well. The problem comes during timeouts which are all scripted. Several times this game we wanted to play but we had to get the sponsorship announcements in or whatever Jumbotron game was scheduled to happen at that exact moment. I dont know how to fix that except allowing a missed sponsor if the moment dictates. I dont know if that would work well with the sponsors though. Game management just doesnt allow for much deviation from the scripts. Its sad, but so many times over the years SLU goes on a run and the crowd gets into it and the energy is building and a timeout is called... perfect time for a cheer, a song, whatever....and then a scripted announcement comes on and just sucks the life out of the building. I was amazed by the number of AZ fans at the game.
  8. Wildcats add football player to depleted roster Dec. 4, 2003 SportsLine.com wire reports TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ryan O'Hara, the third-string quarterback for the Arizona football program, was added to the seventh-ranked Wildcats' basketball roster Thursday. Forward Isaiah Fox had knee surgery Tuesday and he will miss at least three months. Coach Lute Olson is considering asking for a medical redshirt year for him. O'Hara, a 6-foot-6 freshman, began the football season battling Nic Costa and Kris Heavner to start at quarterback, but was a third-stringer by season's end. He will play forward in basketball. "We've got to get him into basketball shape, but he will be nice addition to our scout team," Olson said. "Ryan was a solid player in high school." O'Hara earned four basketball letters in high school, although he played sparingly as a senior at Pasadena (Calif.) Muir High after hurting his knee during the football season.
  9. I'll pick up Charlie Newberry
  10. http://wildcat.arizona.edu/papers/97/50/01_1.html Hoops center arrested for theft By Ty Young Arizona Daily Wildcat Monday November 3, 2003 UA men’s basketball player Isaiah Fox was arrested Wednesday on charges of stealing food from the U-Mart in the Student Union Memorial Center. U-Mart employees told police this is not the first time he has shoplifted from the store, UAPD reports stated. On Wednesday at 10:40 a.m., two employees followed Fox, anticipating another theft, as he walked down store aisles, reports stated. They saw Fox put a bagel, cream cheese and a king-sized Hershey candy bar in the front pocket of his sweatshirt and walk out of the store. One employee followed him into the UofA Bookstore, where she found him at a magazine rack, reports stated. The employee asked Fox to come back into the U-Mart. As she spoke with him, Fox tried to hide the bagel and cream cheese behind a magazine rack, reports stated. The employee told police that Fox asked her to ignore the incident if he promised to not go into the U-Mart again. The employee refused and ordered Fox to return to the store and speak with her supervisor. When Fox went back to the U-Mart, the employee returned to the bookstore and found the candy bar Fox was seen stealing. Officials from the bookstore confirmed with the employee that they do not sell that type of candy bar in their store, reports stated. Fox admitted to both the U-Mart supervisor and police that he had stolen the bagel and the cream cheese, but not the candy bar. When the officer told Fox that the candy bar had been found in the bookstore, he said, “All right, fine. I took the Hershey Bar,†reports stated. Fox also told the officer that he has stolen from U-Mart before. He had never been confronted before, even when taking items in plain view of employees, reports stated. The bagel and cream cheeses were valued at $1.49 and the Hershey bar was $1.09. Fox faces a misdemeanor charge of shoplifting. Theft from the U-Mart or any other university-run building is considered prohibited student conduct and is punishable by expulsion, according to the UA Student Code of Conduct. Police told Fox that he would be arrested for trespassing if he returns to the store, reports stated. “I am very sorry for all of this. I feel that I’ve let down the coaching staff, my teammates, the fans and the school. It’s so embarrassing. This is a big learning experience, and it will never happen again,†Fox said. Arizona men’s basketball associate head coach Jim Rosborough was unable to comment on the situation, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. “We know of the situation, but we cannot comment on it,†Rosborough said. Fox, a 6-foot-9, 269-pound forward/center from Santa Monica, Calif., played in 31 of 32 games for the Wildcats last season, averaging 3.6 points and three rebounds per game. He is expected to play a more important role on the team this year, though head coach Lute Olson has said Fox needs to keep himself in physical playing condition. Fox said he missed Saturday’s intra-squad scrimmage because of an eye injury that had to be X-rayed.
  11. I found it amazing to read that the team only had 8 scholarship players dressed. If the pulley situation doesnt work itself out, the tigers will have just those 8 guys until conely can play.
  12. 1380 had the pressor live. Biondi spoke as did woolard, linda Bruno and Wextall (sp?) the university provost. There were quite a few comments about the "like minded institutions" with "shared beliefs" in regards to academics and athletics.
  13. Started many years ago, (pre "TheBand") as a joke about the cheerleaders. A former band member kept hearing the Cheerleaders do their "You, You, You, on you" cheer for every foul. He started to sarcasticly add "and your mama too." It ticked off a couple of cheerleaders and the tradition was born. The cheerleaders do not partake in the "and your mama too" portion of the cheer. Heck, sometimes they miss a foul and dont do the cheer at all (busy checking their hair, i guess). Its a simple thing to do, all the groups do it together (band, students, bluecrew) and one of the only traditions SLU actually has, so I would vote to keep it.
  14. I'm not sure if you are kidding here or not, but it already is 'Saint' Louis University. In every publication put out by SLU, they make a point of spelling out the Saint. The PD just refuses to follow suit and goes with the abbreviated St.
  15. Olympic soccer is the same way. 2 ots then penalty shots. I dont quite know the best answer. Soccer isnt like baseball or basketball where someone more than likely to score at some point. Hockey has the same problem with regular season games and travel, so they go with the one ot and a tie, but I guess you could go the playoff route of hockey and play till someone scores. I do enjoy those multiple ot games in hockey, maybe i would enjoy that in soccer too.
  16. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 8, 2003 Women’s Soccer Contact: Diana Koval BILLIKENS FALL IN C-USA TITLE GAME ON PKs CHARLOTTE – Saint Louis University women’s soccer finished in a double-overtime 1-1 tie with DePaul in the finals of the Conference USA Tournament at Transamerica Field, but the Blue Demons claimed the title with a 4-3 decision in penalty kicks. The game was hard-fought throughout with the Billikens out-shooting DePaul 18-14. With five penalty kicks for each team, Jamie Perry struck the first for SLU, but saw DePaul keeper Lindsay Deason dive to her left for the save. After Lauren Spacht drove home DePaul’s first strike, Courtney Hulcer, Kelly Ferguson and Dee Guempel knotted the strikes at 3-3. Amber Prindle gave DePaul a 4-3 lead, and Deason came up with the final stop on Carrie Carlson’s final strike to give the Blue Demons the championship. The first half was a game of punch and counterpunch. After every strong Billiken advance, the Blue Demons pressed forward as well. The Billikens went ahead in exactly that fashion. In the third minute, Christie Cigno sent Tara Gresco wide down the right side. Gresco sent a quick pass to Anna Schuch at the face of the goal. DePaul keeper Lindsey Deason punched the ball clear before Schuch got a shot off. The Blue Demons quickly went the other way with C-USA Player of the Year Julianne Sitch attacking the Billiken defense. A SLU foul on Sitch in the box put the DPU midfielder at the penalty spot against SLU keeper Amanda Martin. Sitch went to the right, and Martin deflected the penalty kick. Sitch collected the rebound and forced Martin into another quick save. On the Billikens’ next advance down the field a DePaul foul gave SLU a deadball near the right sideline 45 yards out with under a minute left in the period. Trisha Neidenbach struck the deadball and found Cigno near the penalty spot. Cigno got a head on it and, after the shot grazed the leg of a Blue Demon defender, the ball skidded past Deason to give the Bills a 1-0 lead. The Blue Demons got the equalizer quickly in the second half. Sitch took the ball on the left side 10 yards outside the box and lofted a pass over the defense to Margo Sackmaster. Martin came out to challenge Sackmaster one-on-one, but Sackmaster sent it into the lower left corner to tie the game 1-1. DePaul nearly took the lead in the 84th minute as Sitch took a shot after a corner bounced around the box, but Courtney Hulcer was at the post to clear the ball and preserve the tie. The Billikens looked to go ahead in the 89th minute when Kelly Ferguson sent a ball through to Tara Gresco running up the left side, but Gresco’s shot scooted just wide of the far post. Gresco had the best and only opportunity for either side in the first overtime period. After a corner was deflected out by DePaul, Jamie Perry kept the ball in play for Guempel, who sent a serve to the left side for Gresco. Her quick shot was poked out by Deason. In the second OT, Sitch took a dangerous shot that went wide of the goal and just out of Sackmaster’s reach. The Billikens return home with their 14-5-3 overall record and await the NCAA Tournament selection show on Mon., Nov. 10. SAINT LOUIS 1, DePAUL 1 DePaul wins the title on PKs 4-3 SLU - 44:10 Cigno (Neidenbach) DPU - 47:42 Sackmaster (Sitch) Shots: DPU - 14, SLU - 18 Corners: DPU - 5, SLU - 6 Saves: DPU - 7 (Deason), SLU - 8 (Martin 7, Team 1) Fouls: DPU - 16, SLU - 9 Offsides: DPU - 0, SLU - 1
  17. The key is the tourney games are going to be at the downtown arena (used to be the riverfront Coleseium, now I think its called US bank arena, or something) The last time we were there 2 years ago for c-usa, they did not have any seating on the floor besides the bands and press in the end zones. none of the seating from the lower bowl extends out onto the floor like it does at freedom hall or kiel here in stl. That meant we were able to stand the entire time. we'll see if the same is true this year. i find it amazingly ironic that the year we switch conferences (05) is the same year as the start of a two year deal to play in the same city that we've played so freakin often...we will end up playing a conference tourney in cincy 5 times in 8 years as a band person, i'm just thrilled that we wont have to deal with c-usa stuff and brenda weare anymore. i just wish this season was our last and we made the move next year. i hate lame duck seasons. whatever the a-10 rules are, ANYTHING is better than the c-usa crap.
  18. 124 behind the set and bass amp.
  19. ...when Claibs said he had't had the chance to do any research on the A-10 issue. THATS YOUR JOB!! He is supposed to have more information than the average listener. Too bad thicks...your points were well spoken, he just wouldnt listen. He's not the only one over there that doesn't think SLU fits with the A-10. Caught Wilson during his hockey show sarcasticly saying he cant wait for the Rhode Island game tix to go on sale. Harry at 1380 also is a Valley apologist and doesn't get it either. Its a case where Claibs, and Harry are just going with knee jerk reaction as opposed to true research. Again, nice job. I didnt realize it was you at first (didnt catch Claibs saying your name) but i recognized the points brought up by Billikens.com right away.
  20. He cant say anything and am not faulting him for that. I think some of that credit needs to go to Cedric Dempsey. I bet He's the most respected person out there in regards to slu. His name and reputation preceeded him.

  22. Woolard didnt say too much. He played it all close to the vest and made it a point to say (several times) that SLU was still a CUSA member. A few points by woolard -On resentment from CUSA members to people leaving the conference: Its just a business but some may be frustrated since its football driven. Seems like there may be fewer options without football. -Interested in moving: Certainly will look at options that lay out the best possible options for all the athletes at SLU. Right now we finally know what CUSA will look like (with the loss of the Big East schools and the addition of CUSA's new five) -Comment on A10 Reports: SLU has exchanged info with A10 and other conferences are interested. Needs to find a good match in Academic philosophies and athletics. SLU would also look at revenue for the program (keeping it budget neutral) as well as exposure for the university as a whole. Valley: Elgin has called and SLU has talked to them a little. Its certainly a league Woolard respects (he played in it a little). Arena: Going well. raved about possibilities that it would bring. Football: Would be too expensive.
