  1. Nice Claggett reference. I remember a game where he played the full time possible and dribbled the ball off his foot 'cause he was so gassed. I agree that these kids have more energy just being the age that they are. BUT, if you have the chance to have a "fresher" player on the court to counter the opponents "fresher" player, thats got to be the way you go. Perhaps the full 40 is too much for Dreaj, but Fish seems to thrive in those types of games. It seems that you just have to know your players and what they can and cannot handle.
  2. DeSmet made this KEY point: > >When they use the transportation as a key aspect in their >marketing ploy and then find a way to screw it up, that >wrong on SLU's part. That effectivly ends the argument for me. Keep your promises SLU. By the way, the Events Management position has been filled (it was once held by Terry Elmore) by a gentleman named Koshay. He came to us from the C-USA office and worked for Brenda Weare (some of you will recognize that name)
  3. Dear lord, why does the department continue to mess up the "simple" things. How hard is it to tell the bus drivers to make more than one trip? Heck, don't stop running the busses after tipoff, keep 'em running in case a student has a class that ends at 7 pm and still wants to go to the game. The goal is to MAKE IT EASY FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND GAMES!!!
  4. Interesting read. I like the fact that its a running series about his recruiting visits, a little bit of insight that we as fans may never get to see.
  5. piss him off and have him screw us again. Maybe he has had a chance to think it over and >will try to make it up to us. If this is the type of ref he is, we dont want him AT ALL. Absolutely you point out to him that you didn't like that marginal 5 second call. If he is the type of ref that reacts to a hostile crowd, then he is a BAD ref. Hit 'em hard.
  6. I don't exactly know all the ins-and-outs, but I bet bars have to pay more for cable than residential customers. In the long run, (perhaps) for the general sports bar/fan (who want to watch a team that is not stuck with a tv deal on cable access like SLU) something like satellite programming, Dish Network, Direct TV offers more programming options than what Charter cable offers. From that standpoint, (more programming and perhaps a lower cost) that may be the better choice for Humphreys, to stick with their current setup rather than pay an additional cost of adding Charter cable for a limited number of Charter Cable SLU events. Its all about business, and remember, a lot of restaruants don't even last their first year, so that additional cost of Charter may sound like a drop in the bucket to us, may be too much for the bar .
  7. I still would've liked to see it happen next year, but the chance to see memphis and cincy at home one more time for a proper SLU Band sendoff is a nice bonus. I like the fact that the Big East folks have to hang out for that final season and not leave us in the lurch. Britton wanted 6-8 Million from the Big East and an additional amount to total 10 million? WOW! He really predicts a loss in revenue when the "marquee" teams leave c-usa.
  8. The manager over there at Wackadoo's in BSU is a former SLU band member. His name is Mike Sykora and I bet he'd be able to set something up for us. Give him a shout if we're setting something up in the future.
  9. Bush began anchoring some news casts shortly after 9-11 when he felt that he wanted to "do more". He is a fulltime news anchor now and left the sports dir gig several months ago.
  10. I can't argue with much that was posted. I missed Luke's first foul in the first quarter and saw the second (second looked legit). To me, he seemed to not get his rythem going until that third quarter. Seems like a player (in this game at least) that lets the game come to him. He didn't show me much til the 3rd quarter (due to fouls) but has a nice sweet shot and was handling the defense out top. The comparison to Sloan is accurate, similar body types but Luke seems to have a more deliberate shot (this is from one game of viewing). I don't see him as a difference maker right away, but definately a four-year guy who will contribute a lot jr and senior years.
  11. And look at Charlotte. Talk about a program that doesn't get its due props. Anywhere else people would always mention Charlotte as a good team, but with SO many programs along tobacco road they get lost in the picture.
  12. Fun idea! Obviously at Kiel, it would never work. Too much mayhem as they switch from hoops to hockey, besides they want us out immediately. I wonder if its even worthwhile since so many of our "fans" leave the games early, EVEN IF THEY ARE GOOD CLOSE GAMES, to miss traffic. When we dont have a Blues game following us, we try to do a song after 'Saints' for the six or seven people left in the crowd. The only downside is that you have to remember all of us are volunteers. We get nothing in the way of credit (when we are students) or anything from the university to compensate for our time. We arrive an hour early for all home mens games ( half an hour for as many womnen's games as possible) and many of us are there up to 45 minutes after the final buzzer storing the equipment. Its quite a lot of time devoted to one game and quite a bit of playing for us. After some of these games I personally am spent and really couldn't play anymore if i wanted to. (Perhaps if i was better trained... an practiced a bit more....) Hey, i love the idea and i commend the stanford band for having the chops to do what they do. That takes some stamina. Oh, the anthem is usually sung by someone or a group. we are the backup if they dont show up
  13. I like this way to handle the situation: assistant band director at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.,...and colleagues employ what he calls "the unwritten rule of emotional override" when the school's team is in the midst of a comeback or has just surged ahead. Ignoring the directions he is receiving over his headset from the marketing staff, he will instruct the band to play. "Sorry we missed that," he tells the marketers. I wish we had that rule. Heck at the K-State game we had a similar situation late in the game and waited through an entire timeout for Guy and the event personell to get their collective acts together and read something. I agree (and remember, I am just a member of the band and do not speak for the band, its director or Saint Louis U) that the timeout situation isnt great, but we do have a group of people at SLU that enjoy us playing and have made efforts to give us as much time as possible. We get sevral scheduled timeouts each half, more often than not we also get the unscheduled ones as well, pregame and most of halftime as well as the tail end of timeouts with a scheduled event. We really get to play a lot and I'm disappointed that other schools with good bands dont get that oppertunity.
  14. 35 Marquette 57.9 Anyone else wonder how much of a difference that final four appearance made in their ranking? Now, I'm not taking a shot, just curious how much of an effect a year like that has on a program. On the other side, how much does a bad year tank a ranking...say you were to go back an additional year and include Grawer's last season, how far would we drop? I agree that 10 years is a good amount of years to include for a reasonable estimate of a program's strength, just curiosity.

  16. We were listless on defense for the first 25 minutes of the game. Stupid fouls caused by being out of position on defense. Then, the light turns on and we start to play a little harder, but at that point, you have already shot yourself in the foot b/c your 2 best bigs already have 2 fouls and you have to rely on lesser talent (in one case ) and less experienced talent. Don't Dig yourself into holes.
  17. Roy wrote: "that person does not deserve rights over long time billiken club members or season tix holders" -Agreed. Especially the fact that some people cannot give extra beyond their season tix. My family has had 5 for 20 + years. I know that counts forsomething, but to have a johnny come lately with a big check book. ****** our spot bugs me. -A thought, we in the band have had many people stop playing, and then go buy season tickets. Those folks (Baby Blues and Cheerleaders too, I guess) donate a lot of time and effort during the games for years, but when they go to get season tix they are last in line in seniority. Perhaps every one of them who has been there for quite some time could get bonus Billiken Club poimts if they want to? Roy wrote "i would also believe there will be limited underground parking as well at the arena itself. at least i have seen that setup before." - Probaby not enough to make a difference. As big as Kiel is, there may be (when an event is in session with the tv trucks and all) is additional parking for maybe 15 cars. Expect a walk from the Olive Compton garage or the Laclede garage. Roy wrote "doesnt compton go across highway 40 there? i.e. is there opportunities to expand for parking and business just across hgwy 40? not saying that is much more convienent" -yeah, but I think everything on that side is industrial (I know Sigma Aldrich is over there as well as the Metro garage) plus Market Street right there is 6 lanes right at the end of a highway 40 exit/entrance as well as Forest Park Pky. I dont see that happening. The people in the best spot may be the folks who own the old Firehouse at Olive and Compton. That bar will get tons of business. In all, as a former opponent, I'm impressed with the building. Woolard was on 1380 yesterday afternoon and said that the seat worst seat in the house would be about the same distance from the court as the suites at Kiel. The seating will be arranged at a steeper level than those at Kiel. I'm impressed with that. Also, I like the fact that most of the building will be underground keeping the building low to the ground. Now, I didnt see anything on any of the pictures that said "Band Seating"...hmmmmm
  18. SLU Arena will be at Laclede and Compton By DOUG MOORE Post-Dispatch 12/18/2003 St. Louis University officials will announce tomorrow that a $70 million arena will be built near Laclede and Compton avenues on the eastern edge of campus, the Post-Dispatch has learned. University and city leaders will hold a press conference Thursday morning under a heated tent on the parking lot of the shuttered Waring School, which the university recently purchased from St. Louis Public Schools for $1.25 million. The 63-year-old school would be razed to make way for the 13,000-seat arena. Tennis courts and at least some of the Grand Forest Apartments used for student housing also would be taken out by arena construction. The Rev. Lawrence Biondi, president of SLU, and Mayor Francis Slay are among those expected to speak at Thursday's ceremony. The arena would be home to the university's basketball program. University officials want it open for the 2005 season to coincide with the university's switch to the higher profile Atlantic 10 conference from Conference USA. The university's athletics program is largely supported by men's basketball, which has made more than $17.5 million for the university in the past eight seasons. Biondi has said having an arena on campus will increase game attendance by students and help with recruitment. Basketball games are currently played downtown at the Savvis Center. The university-owned site was chosen over a location in Grand Center, just north of campus. Biondi said it was becoming too expensive to acquire the properties in the nearly 11-acre area bounded by Olive Street, Washington Boulevard, Theresa Avenue and Leonard Avenue. The city created a tax incentive for the arena to be built north of Lindell Boulevard and in Grand Center, the city's arts and entertainment district. By building there, about $15 million in new taxes from development in the district would have been contributed to the arena project. The arena still will be in the taxing district. But SLU stands to get only $5 million because less money is needed to acquire property. Still, university officials, said the additional $10 million would not have covered the costs to buy property. The university has raised $10 million of the $40 million in private finding for the arena with an accelerated fund- raising campaign to begin in January. The university plans to borrow about $25 million to be paid off with revenue generated by the arena. In addition to basketball, the arena would be used for concerts, circuses, rodeos and boxing matches as well as small exhibitions. Renderings of the new arena can be found on SLU's Web site, www.slu.edu
  19. He indicated on the James Brown interview on 1380 that family is taking care of his tuition expenses...so it may very well be that aunt paying the tuition.

  21. and it was interesting....my brief take from the interview is that: 1. Ricky is a saint and has never done anything wrong in his life. 2. Jessica was on drugs and he was trying to get her off them. He felt sad for her. 3. Who can blame Ricky for taking cash, everyone else does. 4. He didn't do anything and was told to plead guilty. 5. The media is at fault Its a weird, weird tale. I dont think he has any credibility, but who in the situation does besides Mike Alden?
  22. I can picture a whole row of people holding up enlarged checks with players names on them signed by Lane Odom.
  23. 1380 am James Brown on Sporting News Radio will feature Ricky Clemons during his show during the 9 - 11 am segment on friday. Also, Mo Scott will broadcast the East St Louis vs Hazelwood Central game tonite from the Shootout that gametime is 6 pm.
