Odd story concerning Vashon H.S.

Demetrious Johnson was talking about a P-D writer by the name of Jeremy Koller(sp?)tonight on his radio show. It seems Jeremy sent a letter to a Dr. Jones at Vashon High School with a request to investigate their telephone records. The letter was read on the air. DJ had Floyd Irons on the show and asked the coach if he knew what this was all about. Irons said he did not. DJ called Koller(sp?) a coward and gave out his phone number on the air. The funny thing is: I did a search of Koller using a few different spellings, went under a couple of different search engines but couldn't find a Jeremy Koller listed as a P-D writer. Although DJ said Koller wrote what he described as negative stuff about Mizzou and Clemons in the past. Johnson said he will be writing an editorial about it in the St. Louis American later this week..

and was wondering who he was referring to. At first, I thought he misspoke and was talking about Vahe Gregorian. Anyway, thanks for clarifying that for me David. It seems that DJ was implying that Jeremy Kohler was a sports reporter, but that appears to not be the case. Just because he contributed to an article in the Sports section doesn't qualify him as a Sports reporter.

J Molina, I think the issue that DJ had with Jeremy Kohler is that it looked like the Post were going on a witch hunt on Floyd Irons. By gathering phone records and other information, I believe that DJ was thinking that they were trying to gather dirt on him in the form of illegal recruiting or illegal contacts... but who knows. Basically, DJ and the other hosts were wondering why this request wasn't made of other Public High League schools. While they couldn't verify that other PHL schools weren't contacted, they assume that Jeremy Kohler is only focusing on Vashon. This is based on Floyd's claim that Jeremy or another Post reporter interviewed another PHL coach about Floyd Irons, so that's why they think this Post probe is centered on Vashon only. Floyd did say that he welcomed any investigation or interview from the Post since he has nothing to hide, but wondered why other area coaches don't receive the same scrutiny.

It appears to be real sketchy to me, so I look forward to reading DJ's editorial this Thursday. It is possible that this is a non-sports related issue where Jeremy Kohler is requesting phone records of Vashon to determine if there is any financial mismanagement in terms of improper phone use. If that is the case, let's hope that the Post samples more than just Vashon within the St. Louis Public School system.

while i dont pretend to be a reporter or come close to understanding what they have to do to do their jobs, it would make sense that a reporter will dig around the areas that smoke is already rising from to find a good fire to write about. than to poke in areas that there isnt any sign of heat.

if i was demetrious johnson, i would just not worry about it. my gosh he has enough to do with assisting in the purchse of the missouri rosters. i would hate to see him stretched too thin.

DJ and Floyd are missing the point. If a reporter is covering a news story--and the accusations surrounding Mizzzou and its players are inarguably a news story--then the reporter has a duty to research and investigate the facts surrounding the story. It would be bad journalism for the reporter not to request and review public records relating to the story.

regarding Mizzou and Vashon. I hope you're not referring to that nasty rumor that Jimmy McKinney might not have taken the ACT test. That's so ridiculous. If anybody needed to have his ACT taken for him, it would have been Nicholas Kern. Need I remind everyone that McKinney was a top-notch student at Vashon and was excelling during his first semester at Mizzou.

Although there have been no specific allegations made regarding McKinney, Mizzou's general recruiting practices over the last two years have been called into question. Because Jimmey is the most high profile Mizzou recruit from St. Louis area during this period, the St. Louis reporters are doing their job by researching the facts surrounding his recruitment. If they don't find anything, then I assume they won't report anything. They are not fabricating any news stories; they are merely covering their bases.
