I remember driving up there one year for a High School playoff sectional. Not the easiest place to find at night if you don't know where it is. Got lost and turned around a few times. And once you arrive on the campus area, finding the gym isn't all that easy either. I'm still not sure I would know the way. And the parking situation wasn't the best. They would have to expand seating in the gym. I don't think the place could hold more than 5k. Though it has been a long time so my memory might be a bit sketchy on the details. I do remember it's not easy to find if you don't know the route.

I'm told CSTV put a price tag on Charter Cable they couldn't afford to pick up. That cable-satellite network did not reach an agreement this season with Charter. "It was up to CSTV to renew it, but it didn't get it done,'' SLU acting senior associate director of athletics Doug McIlhagga said. Five Bills games from the league's syndicated package will be picked up by KPLR (Channel 11) starting with the Jan. 20 contest at Fordham. Also, the Feb. 1 game, at 7:30 p.m. vs. St. Joseph's, will be on ESPN2. But that's piddling compared to the TV schedule in recent years. "St. Louis U. did its best to try to save the local package,'' said Frank Cusumano, who did the play-by-play on the Charter games. "It's devastating in this special year not to have any local telecasts. I feel really bad for the players and the program that they're not getting the exposure they deserve. Up to this point, it's been a very exciting tournament. Lots of upsets and fantastic finishes. But this one tonight was the first one that made me physically sick to my stomach. At least there's one upside. The ACC is done! Push comes to shove, I'll take the SEC over the Big East anyday. For LSU to emerge after all that happened with them and hurricane Katrina is admirable.

Huge league win on the road for McK College. Illinois-Springfield was unbeaten in conference play coming into tonight. Mike Strobbe and Bryant Lyles were especially big in the second half for the 'Cats. The 10th ranked team in the NJCAA this week, Southwestern Illinois rolled to their 13th win in a row today - 73-50 over Kaskakia College. But I know you all want to hear about Stemler. After a 4 pt first half and a poor shooting exhibit, Harrington benched him late in the period and for the ENTIRE second half. Apparently there was an exchange between the two late in the first half, which I did not see. So, I asked Harrington about it after the game. "He was struggling today. The kid is under a lot of pressure. He's got about 30 schools looking at him. But he threw a bit of a tantrum out there. That type of behavior will not be tolerated on our floor. So, we sat him down to teach his ass a lesson." Ouch! Also, according to Harrington, Missouri State had people on hand to look at him today. Billikens still are searching for elusive winning streak SLU yet to have back-to-back wins BY STEVE KORTE Belleville News-Democrat ST. LOUIS - Win one, lose one, win one, lose one. It's a pattern that the St. Louis University Billikens (8-7, 2-1) will be trying to break when they play the Richmond Spiders (9-7, 2-1) at 6:30 p.m. today at the Robins Center in Richmond, Va. "The next step now is to get over that hump, not to break the string, but to play good basketball and try to get a road win in conference," Billikens coach Brad Soderberg said. "I'm not so much concerned about the win-loss thing as I am us continuing to be competitive in the conference standings." The Billikens have to yet to put together a two-game winning streak or a two-game losing streak this season. "You can't be over .500 unless you win two games in a row at some point," Soderberg said. "That's the first step. I think this team is better than a .500 ballclub." They've done this one-step-forward, one-step-backward dance for a team-record 17 games going back to the final two games of last season. The Billikens 1945-46 squad alternated wins and losses through their first 11 games. Soderberg said he hasn't even addressed the oddity with his players. "The wins and losses take care of themselves," Soderberg said. "I never really worry about the sequence of when you win and when you lose, my concern is about the quality of play. If the quality of play improves, you'll see the wins come along." The Billikens are coming off a 50-48 win over Massachusetts Minutemen on Saturday. The game was decided on freshman Tommie Liddell's 15-foot fallaway jumper with 1.5 seconds left. All three of the Billikens' Atlantic 10 Conference games have gone down to the final ticks of the clock. They beat St. Bonaventure 60-58 as a last second 3-pointer by the Bonnies rimmed out. They lost to George Washington 69-64 in overtime as Danny Brown lost control of the ball as he tried to take the potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation. "We've been through three A-10 games, and the last shot has affected every one of them," Soderberg said. "It has been very competitive so far. We're lucky to be 2-1, and yet on the positive side, we're so close to being 3-0." The Billikens are meeting the Spiders for the first time. The Spiders are coached by Chris Mooney, who spent the previous year as the head coach at the Air Force Academy. Mooney replaces Jerry Wainright, who left to become the head coach at DePaul University. The Spiders are led by seniors Jermaine Bucknor and Kevin Steenberge. The 6-foot-7 Bucknor is averaging 12.4 points per game, while the 6-foot-11 Steenberge is averaging 9.3 points per game. The Spiders top the A-10 in scoring defense, allowing only 53 points per game. That's all that mattered this evening. As bad as most on here felt after the GW game, to beat at least a "nationally recognized" program, if not a Top-25 opponent this year, is certainly satisfying. Every reason in the world to feel good about the outcome of this contest tonight.

Whereas a radio guy has to be more "descriptive". Not everyone can be Brent Musburger. Of course you have the opposite end of the spectrum w/ Billy Packer who absolutely grates on my last nerve. I digress though. Overall, I think Bills fans are fortunate to have the announcers we do. It doesn't get much better than Earl or Joe W. Those are solid basketball people, for lack of a better description.
