First half against Hawaii

Billikan

The first half just concluded and we are behind by 10 points. That difference is not at all indicative of the game. We were close for most of the half after taking an early lead. Then the 3 point shooter from Hawaii hit 3 open shots when his man helped rather than stay with him. Danny Brown was the culprit and he just need to stay up on the shooters.

We made some young team mistakes. Dwayne played well but Tommie, Danny, and Kevin made some ugly mistakes. Ian had a terrific half but he also made some mistakes. Bryce played several nice minutes and had two buckets. Until the very end of the half we had very little trouble holding off their 4 man but he got two buckets late. A game like this shoule be a good learning experience. If we can play smarter in the second half--we had 7 turnovers-- and we can defend their shooter--he was 5 for five including four for four from three point range--then we can hope to get back in the game.

the first 10 minutes of the game the billikens controlled tempo going both directions. then hawaii started getting back quicker and we began walking the ball down the floor. all at once our quickness didnt matter anymore and the game was over.

if we are going to do this 4 guard thing, they have to keep pushing the ball and playing good pack defense.

also, sensley was just marvelous. he was just too much for drejaj, newborne and liddell. no one phased him. as feared by many of us, our achilles heal is the power forward position.

the good news for the night from what i saw was ian played pretty good against some size. now we need some consistency from someone else as well.

IV played great. We may have even tried to work it to him too much if that is possible. It seemed like DP took too many shots especially w/ such a bad hand. LM hit some 3s at the end. Overall not as bad a night as it seemed. They hit everything contested or not and we got cold until the last minute of the game.

by DB only getting 23 minutes. Was this punishment for his lack of D on the perimiter? He wasn't in foul trouble. Also, telling that JJ got no minutes even in mop up. Here we got Sensely killing us and our 6'8" guy rides the pine. Fear JJ's career at SLU is effectively over.

By the final score as it was our kids first test on the road in a darn tough place to play. It looks like early on we gave them a game, but suspect defense and something that killed us last year...poor shooting really gave us little chance to win. On paper it looks like the 4 guard offense may need some adjustment when we meet a team with size. The shooting percentages from the 4 guards were generally not what it would take to compete with a chance to win against a tough opponent on their home floor. slu72 I think you make a good observation, if Johnson cannot get minutes in this game then he may find it very hard the remaining part of this year to get any minutes. Hopefully, our youngters did get a good lesson from yesterday's game and can correct some of the things they did get wrong.
