kahok, what frustrates me is that i believe we are one piece of the puzzle from having a good team. it might be a team that needs another year of seasoning since our guards are all young, but the pf position is the only one that doesnt make sense. we now have to believe that vashun newborne and/or justin johnson will have some sort of transformation over the summer to fill out the puzzle.

i just think that by last december it should have been obvious and i just cant fathom how other programs like hawaii, oral roberts, wisconsin-milwaukee, siu, etc all have/had better inside players than what we have. what do they all have to offer that slu cannot? it has to come down to a lack of attention to that position. and considering we havent had a player nicely fill that role in almost 15 years, it is just a head shaker.

i assumed kahok meant that ian cant run the floor and is more suited to a walk it up the floor type of game. yet all our guards appear to be ready to take off.

I agree I believe we are one piece of the puzzle away and a couple of years experience with those pieces together. I need to qualify those pieces of the puzzle however. To have a really good team those pieces of the puzzle need to have a system that fits them and a coach that knows how to use them in that system. Time will tell whether Brad can coach a bunch of race horses, I have my doubts because he never looked comfortable with Polk the past year.

If he's looking at Quincy, then we don't need to get someone like that. If someone is considering SLU over another D-II program like ours than it's time to move on and quit wasting budget unless another Lou Fusz commercial shoot is coming up. I checked www.loufusz.com for Soderberg's schedule of commercials and none were posted. Sorry.

We currently have three scholarships available. I don't understand why there is talk of perhaps holding on to all of those until next year? We are coming off a 9-21 season!!! Clearly there are areas of improvement. Our frontline consists of Ian, Husak, VN, and JJ. Husak is a complete unknown, JJ had some problems last year and VN was a disappointment. If we have one injury on the frontline, we are screwed big time. If our staff can't find a 6-7 to 6-10 kid to sign this spring who at least has some potential, then they've failed. We have little or no track record of landing big who can step and contribute right away, so why not get one in the system who has a year to develop before VN graduates. I think taking another raw player like JJ makes some sense. Because chances are, if we wait, next year that's the only type of player we'll be able to land anyway. I'm skeptical that next year, we'll magically land a big because we held on to this scholarship. Since these type of players take time to develop, the sooner we get them in the program the better.

At this point, I hope we land X, sign a big with potential, and save one for next year. That would still leave us with three scholarships for next year.

I thought you were insinuating that the pieces we have now don't fit ... and I believe they do. Our center is not going to sprint up the floor and fill the lane on breaks ... nor do we want him to. We want him inside banging getting boards and getting the ball out quickly. Even a running team will work out of a half court set the large majority of the time. I would like to see us push the ball up the floor and take the easy opportunity when it is given ... but when it is not pull it back and try to work the ball inside to Ian who should be able to recognize when he has the opportunity to score or when he needs to look to kick it back out or to a cutter. Personally ... I don't care if our 4 can fill the lane on a break and don't think he needs to for us to push the ball. I would prefer to see an inside banger who can also get boards, put back some offensive rebounds and play solid D.

Ace - the talk is only centered on if we can not find a player who can help us - just to find a body is of no help - remember Sekue Barrintine and that JUCO from Kansas who was suppose to be a great defensive specialist his name slips my mind. Spoon tended to do that kind of thing and we always regretted it. So if we can not get someone who can actually help rather than simply be a body for practice then yes it makes much more sense to wait and get those promising juniors. By the way, it is the 9-21 record that is making it hard to find adequate players so to use the record as a reason to get someone is a little odd.

None of "those promising juniors" is a big. There is also no guarantee that we'll get them. According to my scenario, we'd still have three schollies to give next year. Finally, going into a season with Ian, Bryce, JJ and VN as our bigs is scary. We're one injury away from being in big trouble.
