GOSLU68
Do your own google search headings don't come out right on this and doesn't show the awards in any given year. Games were only 36 minutes long, etc. No three point shot Ed Mc Cauley was MVP of the NBA Both he and Bob Ferry, a Cleveland High grad were in many playoff games. Ferry played for St. Louis Hawks, Det. Pistons, Baltimore Bullets. NEW! Milestone Watch | NEW! GOSLU68
There should be a picture of each of these guys and the years they played on the walls at the Chaifetz. Kids don't know the rich history of SLU ballplayers. Who is in charge of displaying the hard work and talent of the past players and coaches? thetorch
When the NBA draft began in 1950 there were 10 rounds, over the years it expanded to as many as 17 rounds. In 1987 it was still 7 rounds long, in 88 it went to 3 rounds and 89 went to the 2 round format that has persisted to the present day. For instance Harry Rogers and Rich Niemann were both drafted in the 4th round. They wouldn't have been drafted today. If there were 7 rounds still going on today Lisch and Liddell would have both been drafted. In the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s the draft was very different. Closer to the NFL draft now. The vast majortiy of picks by teams would never play in the league. I guess Jeffers was the last Billiken to be drafted. He was a surprise 2nd round pick by the Kings but if he hadn't hurt his knee during summer workout he would have made the Kings roster. I graduated with Rich Niemann and lost track of him as I moved out of state for a long while; we were in a few classes and not close but I learned 20 years ago he spent about 4 years or more with the Celtics as Bill Russell's practice opponent, mainly. I don't think Russell missed too many minutes. To say he wouldn't have been selected because there are fewer rounds now would be hard to prove. He was Seven foot two if you could get him to stand up straight. Eugene Moore was about the same era and got to play more would you have said the same thing about him. Eugene was so smooth the coaches were always on him for not hustling but in reality he was there when you needed him. I would like Joe Wiley's opinion he is a little younger but would have been a fan of both I am sure.
willie
I ran into Rich last week at our local rec center. We talked a little Billiken basketball. He looked pretty fit for a man in his middle 60's. Eugene Moore was a pretty good player in the ABA. Louisville I believe.
doowop
I believe the Torch said the two would not be drafted today because they were drafted in the fourth round and today there is no fourth round. I saw Moore and Niemann play against each other in high school. Moore was 6' 7" and his Sumner team beat Niemann's DuBuorg team 65 to 51. Moore blocked so many of Niemann's shots that the DuBourg coach sat Niemann for much of the second half. DuBourg went on to win the state championship. I believe Moore graduated in January and Sumner was not the same without him.
Hawk
There should be a picture of each of these guys and the years they played on the walls at the Chaifetz. Kids don't know the rich history of SLU ballplayers. Who is in charge of displaying the hard work and talent of the past players and coaches? I would love to see some kind of 'ghosts of SLU basketball' put up around the top of the bowl. It'd be really cool if they did something like the Cardinals did in the outfield. Right now the walls around the arena are just gray concrete, perfect place to put this stuff up. Hell, even naming a few of the entrances around the arena after these guys would be cool. I wouldn't mind walking through the Ed Mcauley Gateway or whatever.
thetorch
Big Rich is at every game. He was a solid pro.

I am pretty sure there are some banners with jerseys hanging in the rafters above the student section... Not sure if this is what you are referring to though. GoBills
There is plenty of time to add on and celebrate the past inside the building. They are planning on honoring several of the past teams throughout this season.

Not sure if this is what you are referring to though. No, I know that the banners are there. I was talking about putting up like murals of the players around the top of the gray barren walls, something like this: http://media.photobucket.com/image/cardina...um/100_0468.jpg
BLIKNS
I thought that Luther Burden was drafted late(8th round or higher ),by the Celtics.
