Charlie, UNLV and one ugly game...

went to the UNLV Colorado State game last nite courtesy of coach spoonhour...

bills would be rebs by 10 this year.

i have been watching charlie coach for over 15 years now - and i have never seen him have such a dumb team and bad guard play. he has only one real pg on team - and while he is very fast - makes terrible decisions and is a kid that definitely was looking for his shot first and to pass second...

charlie has some pretty good athletes - but i don't know if he has many good basketball players...does have one HUGE guy - 6-8 probably 250 who single handedly kept rebs in game...guy was ripped and had some nice touch around basket...

rebs couldn't do anything offensively through more than 3/4 of game - i don't thnk they hit a jump shot til there was only 3-4 minutes to go - but they came back from down 14+ in final 6 minutes or so...had their chances to win - but couldn't get it done - so OT...charlie had SIX kids foul out...while CSU had none.

one of the worst officiated games i have seen in years...stripes lost control of the game midway through second half and were very inconsistent with how they were calling game - ticky tack one minute - and then letting em beat the crap out of each other down low the next...at one point during the comeback UNLV kid dunks ball - comes through the hoop and then gets caught on net somehow and bounces out - officials do nothing then CSU i/b ball and brings up court....about 15+ seconds later officials decide to review what is going on - take away the basket - and give ball back to UNLV - very weird.

was great to see charlie and jay though and after putting up with a really bad game - got entertained the last part of second half and overtime...

UNLV had a pretty decent team last year. I remember them being considered as a bubble team, but believe they lost early in the MWC tourney, so settled for the NIT. I think they are still suffering from the losses of seniors Dalron Johnson and Marcus Banks.

Banks was the heart and soul of last year's team, and got it done on both sides of the ball- winning conference defensive POY his last 2 years and also averaging something like 23 points a game. He was a first round draft pick. I think Johnson averaged around 15. That's nearly 40 points a game you're losing. I'm not going to speculate on Spoon's recruiting abilities, but I'm sure it would be hard to get a Banks again for them.

while i am not spoon's biggest fan, i still respect his coaching ability and the way he handles a program. talk about an impossible task. he was asked to go in and clean up the den of thieves and cheats. after the unlv fandom had grown accustomed of the tarkanian method of running a program, i cant imagine walking into that buzz saw and dealing with that wild animal.

Don't forget that Calipari's protege Bill Bayno ran the cesspool for 5 1/2 years (he was fired when UNLV booster and friend, a dentist, was found out to have given Lamar Odom a bunch of cash--ultimately $17,000--and all Odom had to do was enroll for summer school!).

The all-time low moment in UNLV sports had to be when AFTER booster payments had been found out, Bayno had been fired and UNLV had been put on probation, a senior player brought Bayno on to the court as his guest for Senior Night and they thanked the dentist (!!!) publicly for his "friendship and support"!!!

he wasn't just fired for that, he was fired because his relationship with the owner of a local casino was made public, and the fact that that Bayno had a private suite at the casino where he hooked Bayno up with prostitutes (I believe some players got them too). What a role model for the youth of today!

Charlie was a great bench coach but he did not want to put the time in that is required for recruiting at a high level - showed at SLU when he would get a decent crop every 2-3 years - eventually, that leaves the cupboard a little thin. At SMS, he only had to get a bunch of sound role players and one good player every 4 years for him to be successful in the MVC. I know he won some big first round NCAA games but that was as much his great bench coaching and the usual first round blahs some teams go through historically in the Big Dance. That being said, Charlie took us one more step closer to where our goal is and past where Grawer had topped out. Grawer and Charlie were good for the program - Romar really did not add anything to our progress - in fact if Brad had not lucked out on RB, IO and AD, we would have actually found ourselves going backwards.
