moytoy12
Ok Roy, I'm going to try to answer your question of what other schools averaged in the top 50 in RPI over the last 9 years and had a budget out of the top 50 during that time. I have changed the dynamic. One, I have calculated an average RPI from kenpom for the last 5 years which tracks Sodie's tenure at SLU. Two, I used the budget calculations for 2006. That's all i have access to without really digging and i think it's a good number as most budgets tend to rise over time and hopefully there is some consistency in the budget #'s. I know this quick research is not perfect, but i do think it sheds good light on your argument that we are getting what we are paying for. While we aren't quite getting what we pay for, there are many institutions like SLU that are getting more bang for their basketball budget buck (when comparing average RPI ranking to budget ranking). Perhaps SLU should expect more for its money? There were quite a few schools with a 76+ average RPI ranking (holy cross, winthrop, old dominion, etc) that are getting quite a return for the budget, but those were too far outside the parameters of your question. Here we go: SLU 06-07 Season 74 05-06 Season 101 04-05 Season 182 03-04 Season 64 02-03 Season 57 Average RPI 95.6 Budget - 06 2.1M Budget Rank 89 Utah St. 06-07 Season 45 05-06 Season 46 04-05 Season 50 03-04 Season 43 02-03 Season 79 Average RPI 52.6 Budget - 06 1.4M Budget Rank 148 Mo. slu72
Note, the schools with bigger budgets than SLU tend to get the dance a whole lot more than we do. Maybe that's the result those schools tend to get bigger bucks than SLU who rarely goes.
moytoy12
One other note is that there were a lot of schools ranked in the 75-100 RPI range that have budgets in the 135+ range. So, the notion that we should only expect what we pay for is somewhat in error; however, sustaining top 50 success without a top 50 budget is more difficult. slu72
Prove you can reach the top 50 and maybe you'll get top 50 money.

cheeseman
What struck me about the data was that the difference between schools rankings could be large but the money was maybe only a couple of 100K. In a 6Million plus budget a couple of 100k is very small. Clearly it is the coach from this data - Brad does not look good when in comparision. He has a lot of stepping up to do. davidnark
I am sure the entire "our budget is too small" argument is going to be blown out of the water in two years when some portion of the arena costs get expensed to the men's basketball program. That still won't explain why Brad is always 18 months behind in his recruting. We can debate forever whether Brad is a good coach; however, I don't think the fact that he isn't particularly marketable and doesn't generate much excitement in the community is debatable. In may ways, this is the most concerning issue. People have mentioned that the program needs a male-version of Shimmy. I think there is a of truth to that statement. It would really, really help if we had a young coach who was a good recruiter, a good floor coach, and great marketer of himself and the program. There have to be some hungry assistant coaches out there who fit this description.
billiken_roy
so really you found nevada, st joes, gonzaga and siu that are exceptions tha are able to be a top 50 program without a top 50 budget. four schools. and three of them, st joes, gonzaga, and siu soderberg has praised over and over about their stability and the model they set and he wants to imitate. gonzaga and siu have promoted from within st joes has had martelli for a long time. no quick hitters here. thanks moytoy for the work.
