Do we think Scott Warman will call the games on Ballys again this year alongside Highmark?  Obviously former Cardinals broadcaster Dan McLaughlin was calling Billiken games before his most recent DUI issues.  That makes me wonder if Ballys can dictate that current Cardinals broadcaster Chip Caray call Billiken games.  Caray did call Orlando Magic games from 1989-1998, so he has basketball experience in his past.

Chip's grandpa Harry got his start in radio calling Billiken basketball. Chip's father Skip was the voice of the St Louis Hawks and may have called a few Billiken games himself.

    CUSA: Steve Logan

    A10: Courtney Stockard

Interesting you thought of Steve Logan. My mind went to Melvin Levett. I think they only played together one season when KMart was a junior. Those Bearcats were dangerous!

Kevin was far better than "decent." He is 6th in the all-time SLU scoring list and while that may have been modestly inflated by his teammates not being good enough to spread out the shots, he would have been a major play on any Billikens team, ever. Not to mention he was a two time Australian league MVP and played in the Olympics for Australia. Dude was a stud.

I didn't get to see Kevin play much due to the Billikens and A10s crappy TV distribution in those days. When I saw him play, I saw tenacity, extreme toughness, and leadership. I really liked what I saw. My uncle went to ND with his dad and thinks Rusty is a good dude too.

What are Ford's biggest claims to fame?  Marcus Smart.   Jordan Goodwin.  Yuri Collins.  Makes complete sense for a guard to enlist with Ford's camp.

What are Ford's biggest failures?  Pretty much anybody over 6'7" or 6'8".

From a coaching standpoint, this is it. But he's probably best known for being the starting PG on the 1993 Kentucky Final Four team. Since all of Michigan's wins were vacated did Travis lead his team to the NCAA Championship without actually getting to play the game? I think the official records would suggest it. Weird.

  6. I am sort of at the age where I am surprised to see any of the coaches still active.

Of all the CUSA coaches when I graduated in 01, only John Calipari and Lorenzo Romar are currently employed as head coaches.

Tom Crean will probably catch on with another program and Ray McCallum is the assistant at Tulane. I am shocked Huggins made it another 20 years as it was.

It will now be turned into a float for the 2024 Mardi Gras parade.
contrary to Mulkey’s charm was the Iowa coach, who sells Tupperware to church groups in the off-season. You couldn’t find two more polar opposite coaches in the land facing off for a natty.

Whenever I saw Mulkey in that suit from the zoom out view I would swear I just saw Rod Roddy from Price is Right.

He had a 2.2 defensive box +/- (DBPM), which is quite good... his DRating was less impressive, but that is a bit more of a team stat.

For context, Goodwin's freshman year DBPM was 3.2 - Fred's this year was 3.1. Goodwin's worst (Junior) season had him at 2.4...

Interesting. I would be curious to know the rating for Hasahn French that freshman year and whether the rating is different for front court players. Do you happen to know?

No way he’s 275 and based on observers who saw him at Bradley and posted on their message board, he’s more like 225. Any stats I have seen have come from his coach’s Twitter feed, one post of which appeared on the front of Billikens.com. He can dish so he at least must have good hands.

Considering Chris Heinrich was 255 and much more solid I would think he is 235 tops from the video.

I’ll root for the smaller schools to upset P5 at every opportunity. Since they’re trying to squeeze mid majors out entirely. Otherwise, don’t really care.

How are you enjoying a tournament where we are guaranteed a nonPower 6 school in the final? I have found it exciting.

So where will Coach May be coaching next season?  It won’t be in Boca Raton. He just got himself a huge raise.

My guess is somewhere like the Mountain West or American. He needs a bridge school to work at until the Indiana job opens up but he needs to stay successful until then.

It is interesting that Dusty May is from the coaching trees of both Bob Knight and Rick Majerus. He was an assistant to Mike Davis for 2 seasons at UAB, as well as 2 seasons under Kerry Rupp at LA Tech. Rupp served under Mike Davis himself for 3 seasons and was assistant to Rick Majerus for 4 seasons at Utah, eventually becoming Interim Head Coach when RickMa retired from Utah.

Very interesting pedigree and potential fit for SLU in Coach May but would likely be waiting for that job at his alma mater, Indiana.

I don’t know how much I believe in Hurley, but I don’t think any team has looked more impressive in all of their tournament games to this point than UConn.

Maybe so. But individually has anyone looked better than Timme? It's going to be a great matchup but I got the Zags winning this one.

Yes, this program is ABSOLUTELY on the brink of irrelevance. To the casual sports fan in St Louis we have become an afterthought at best when we are, with all due respect to Lindenwood and SIUE, the ONLY BASKETBALL SHOW IN TOWN.

I'll give you an example, I was at a local sports bar for our A-10 tournament game against VCU. There were probably 20 TVS on showing various games. I had to frigging ask them to turn the SLU game on!!! This was in Webster Groves which is about 15 minutes from campus. You don't think we are an after thought??

The program has no identity anymore.  The next coach will have to bring that.

  14. If we were to decide to revamp the program with a new coach we shouldn't just jump to who is available. We want to decide on an identity and bring in a coach that can recruit, develop, and coach that identity. If we want to continue to sign local players, having a style palpable to the local basketball culture is important.

I have been away from the StL prep scene for awhile so I don't know what that style is. Is it a two-way game where offense and defense are equally strong. Tatum and Carawell did well in that style with Coach K. Are local preps thriving with another style now? Either way, the next coach needs to be part of a long term vision to revamp the program. If that coach isn't available now, we wait and go forward with Ford until he is. But we don't extend Ford in the meantime.
