With the NCAA being pretty toothless against multi-time transfers now, I wouldn’t be surprised to have most of the roster enter every off-season from here on out, just to gauge what their markets are.

2024 SLU Men's Basketball Head Coaching Search

This might be a bit controversial, but more often than not, local players have inflated reputations. The program isn’t going to advance forward without recruiting other locations well. There has to be a mix. -

It is way too late for that. May realistically needed to be gone January 1st in order to have a new person in place to make this hire. -

This is very reasonable, and if there is a choice between both, I’m honestly not sure which guy I’d hire. That being said, I’m not sure if Mack legitimately will be on the table. There are some jobs that inevitably will open that he’d be in heavy consideration for. -

Can’t you say that about every candidate at the end of the day? There’s evidence the guy can coach. Yes, it’s at a lower level, but the mentality that guys need P5 experience to be a good coach are antiquated. -

The way I view it is this: I’d rather be a year early on Schertz than a year late on a P5 guy dropping down. He’s got a wildly successful track record at the D2 level, and it’s showing that it translates to D1. Has he lost to bigger opponents on their schedule? Yes. But he’s doing something at Indiana State that hasn’t been done since Larry Bird. His coaching plus the jump in resources would be a lethal combination. -
This team stinks on the road and on neutral courts. This is a fun game, but let’s not get our hopes up.

2024 SLU Men's Basketball Head Coaching Search

When Hurley landed UConn I thought it was a tremendous reach on the part of the Huskies. As much as I hated him at Rhody, he’s continuously evolved as a coach and turned out to be pretty dang good in the process. While SLU isn’t UConn, it shows what hiring a guy on the upswing of their career, instead of the downward trajectory, can turn into. -

Schertz also could conceivably bring a good chunk of that roster with him. -
I truly don’t know what Chris May has done to earn such a fervent defense argument as, “well actually, it’s the BoT who are to blame.” The way I see it, he’s had two major impactful decisions in his tenure. 1. The extension for Ford. On its own, it wouldn’t be a disaster if it was not such an inflated amount, but it is, and he was played for a fool. 2. The Champions Center. A nice facility upgrade, but not the game changer it was marketed as. His overall tenure is pretty uninspiring in the context of where SLU Basketball has gone under his watch. I don’t trust him in the slightest to make a good hire, and disagree entirely with the notion the BoT should have ignored the contract he negotiated. That’s not the function they serve, and a competent AD wouldn’t have agreed to the terms Chris May did.

Just let Wiz’s computer program create the game plan if those are the options -
Yeah I see what you are saying @slufan13 If they were to keep him on in some sort of fundraising emeritus role, but let someone else take over the day to day, that feels like a fine arrangement to satisfy the biggest number of people.
-
Not to be rude, but where has that gotten us exactly? Any AD worth their salary will develop those relationships, while also spending the money in a better way than May has.

Here’s a novel idea: find a coach who is on the upswing and will adapt to the current NCAA, instead of one from years gone by. At least make the people that inevitably run the search earn that paycheck, instead of just hiring the first name you recognize from back in the day. -

Access journalism at its finest! If SLU is going to oust his buddy who gives him 100% access, you can bet he’s going to want a guy in there who has just as close of a relationship with. -

If I were Bruce Weber, I’d also like a job badly where I could be generously paid for being mediocre at my job. Pretty sweet semi-retirement gig. -
Chris May needs to pull the plug before Saturday. This is pathetic.

What does the current team make off of NIL?
johnbj14 replied to thetorch's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
It is apparent from the absurd contract given to Ford that there isn’t a great grasp on market rate relative to performance coming out of SLU. Is it really that big of a stretch to assume that also doesn’t apply to NIL? Overpay for a coach relative to his results, overpay for players relative to their abilities. If the 750K number @billikenfan05has is accurate, our NIL seems fine. My guess is that people don’t know how to spend it properly, which makes sense based on Ford’s deal. -

johnbj14 replied to thetorch's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
I'm 100% sure he doesn't have a plan. 8 years of evidence that he can't earn an at-large here. Another year won't yield a different result. -
If Ford gets another year, I think that’ll be the thing that finally causes a lot of fans to walk away. He took over a program that was in the basement, never reached the top floor, and now is back in the basement. It’s painfully obvious he isn’t the answer, and I really hope no one falls for the excuses he spouted during that segment.

I’m so ready to be done with the Ford second halves.
-
It’s not like anyone else on this team matches up defensively either… except Larry and Kellen

If Frank is crying about that on the radio, you can assume Ford is too, considering how close they are. It’s just an approach of trying to save his job through excuses. -
Welcome To Billiken Nation, Travis Ford!

Would be the exact kind of hire I’d expect out of May. Just get those 20 wins instead of chasing more. I’d wager he won’t be the person driving the search, after he was the one that really fell in love with Travis as a coach. The decision might be out of his hands entirely.
