Sinquefield Donation Under Scrutiny
Old guy replied to Spoon-Balls's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
The endowment of a professorship chair is expected to fund the needs to keep a professor in it in perpetuity. Therefore the money spent in funding the salaries, etc... does not come out of the principal donated to endow the chair but out of the yearly yield produced by this money. Taking account of inflation the principal must grow with time to cover future needs. No, this is not an excessive amount of money. Assume a risk free 2.0% yearly yield for 10 year treasuries. This produces $300,000 in yearly funds to pay the needs of the chair and grow the chair's endowment. Disclosure: the numbers used for the yield example are not exact and will vary with time. -
I think the true mark of a recruit's value or a players value in primarily in the eyes and mind of the coach, stats do help, but the coach's evaluation is the most important piece.

Sinquefield Donation Under Scrutiny
Old guy replied to Spoon-Balls's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
This is one of the most stupid articles I have read, do the PD reporters bother to look into any subject before they write about it? It works this way: If you are buying a house most PS contracts have a clause requiring that defects found during inspection are fixed. The owner will do his best to fix them or to provide money for the new owner to do so. If seller refuses or cannot, for any reason, do it the deal is off. The buyer keeps his/her money, the seller keeps his house in the market waiting for the next buyer. Universities seek donations, large donations come with terms and requirements attached, if the terms are not met, the donor is free to pull out of the agreement and place his/her donation elsewhere. In general terms the institution receiving the donation will do whatever it needs to do to get the money, including changing policies. Oftentimes the amount of money donated justifies doing things that appear or sound peculiar, like the name of Harvard's Pusey Library which remains the Pusey Library to this day. You must agree that the name of the library is not a major thing compared to the amount of money required to endow it. There are all kinds of really major examples of donors terminating an offer to gift very large amounts to Universities and marching away. For example at the end of the 19th century some owner of a tobacco fortune wanted to donate his money, or most of it, to Yale University, all Yale had to do was to change its name and adopt the donor's name instead. Yale said no. The donor then founded and endowed Duke University in NC. Was Yale's administration stupid? did they do the right thing? Who knows? In any case they lost a vast amount of money for their endowment. What would it be like now if Duke University was in New Haven CT and not in NC? -
Good for Ellis!

Taj for some reason the news reported in the Pantagraph opened in my computer with no problems. This is what was reported. Sunday 9/9 at 2:27 A, a car driven by Milik hit a woman as she was stepping down the curb. The woman was treated for injuries to her L foot and elbow. Milik allegedly did not stop or offer assistance to the woman. The incident was closed until two passengers in Milik's car reported the possible hit and run incident to the police on Tuesday, following which the police arrested Milik at 9:44 P Tuesday. Again, this is what was reported today by the Pantagraph regarding Milik.

Fully agree

Apparently he is a rightie and the injured arm is the left arm. I do not know how much the non dominant arm may influence the accuracy of a shot but would assume that with a good right arm in place he will be able to make progress.

Your degree is from an unranked university...

The USNews changed the way the compute they rankings, I think this year. This may be having an effect upon the numerical ranks. -
OK so this is the official version for this year and I stand corrected.
-
CBFan, this is a superb team, but you cannot afford to open yourself to disappointment if the team turns out to get to rank #30 instead of #25. There are a lot of people literally expecting as a sure fire thing that we will win the A10 and go deep in NCAA. This may come to happen, and if it does happen much the better. There is no certainty that it will happen until it does happen. The team may come out of the gates in the very first game charging like a platoon of main battle tanks, but whatever they do in that first and second games, they will be better by the 8th to 10th game. What is so hard to understand about this?
-
However good they are in the first game, they will be a lot better after the eighth.
-
You can wait for Wiz to tell you the same thing when the season starts. His model will base the level of SLU's team upon last years' plus a fudge for the new players and then get refined over the first eight games or so. Just wait and see what the Wiz says this year. Gordon not Girdon

Butler sounds really good for a kid his age, I am sure both his parents have had a great deal of influence in the development of his feel for basketball. We are in early which is good.
-
Keep in mind that our team has many new players and its performance will improve after the first 8 to 10 games, we will probably reach our stride by early December.
-
I agree that we have the ingredients to go far this year and to continue the rise the following year, how far I really do not know. I think one of the great advantages we have, at least early in the season, is that a lot of the statistics models in use depend to some degree upon prior year performance. This adds a measure of "statistical stealth" to our team that I hope we can employ to our advantage.
-
And may Ford continue doing the same with the same degree of success he has had for many years more at SLU.

I earn my Troll reactions because what I say is something they do not like to hear. Yes I bring a different point of view to this board and yes I am not a troll. As I have said before this not an act or a shtick, and I post what I post because I believe it, not to cause anyone to have a rise. This whole situation is due to the use of the reaction feature which I think should be banned. If someone does not like what I say that is fine. I would much prefer to have them tell me and if they wish, insult me in person.

Welcome to the Bills Yuri Collins, enjoy.

This is not a thesis in structural engineering, it is common sense stuff that you can read in the news and discuss with your friends. If you do not think it makes sense that is fine with me.
-
No Roy, but I read the news and have friends with vacation houses in Florida. I assume you do as well.
-
Willie, I am not a structural engineer but I read the news, and I am aware that jet engines self destruct when turbine blades break loose. Old jet engines have to be inspected for small cracks in the turbine blades which may cause sudden engine failure and require replacement. This has been in the news recently, a woman died during one such event in a Southwest flight. Loewen manufactures windows and glass doors which can withstand impacts from hurricane carried debris without shattering, but this protection does not last forever and the window or door must be replaced after going through a hurricane and sustaining minor damage. Ever had a vacation house or a friend who had a vacation house in Florida? The anti-deformation bracket of the glass backboard may take a 125 lb force without a problem, maybe more, but Gordon weighs a lot more than that, and so does everyone else in the team. I think it is entirely possible for small cracks to develop in the glass backboard during the course of play or practice which eventually may weaken it enough to shatter with succeeding dunks. Checking for small backboard cracks regularly and replacing compromised backboards is probably not that difficult to do and may lower the risk of injury to some players. What is so objectionable about this?
-
As a PR event, a shattered backboard may be great, however it is pretty hazardous for a player to be enveloped in a cloud of glass shards.
-
A glass backboard will probably not shatter if it is inspected after use and replaced when cracks that compromise its integrity are found.
